Swarming for Peace

Swarming for Peace 03/19/2003 10:24 PM
Jack Bury, a 20-year old poet, is co-creator of a Microsoft IE add-in called Eyebees. If you join a "swarm" - people interested in the same topic - the add-in shows you the movement of all other swarm members as they go from site to site. Click on one of the dots representing a swarm member and you are taken to whatever site they're visiting. It's a visceral visual experience. To join the peace swarm, download the Eyebees software from www.eyebees.com and join the "Eyebees March on Washington" swarm (under the category of "The Rally") at Eyebees.com. Jack is suggesting...

Swarming and Grids

Swarming and Grids 12/19/2004 03:07 PM

I ran across SwarmStream and thought it was a wonderful piece of technology.  Basically, they took BitTorrent and slipped it under Java so that any Java application can trade bits as fast as BitTorrent can.

Unfortunately, not enough people needs it badly enough to make it a successful venture IMHO.  Same opinion applies to the grid technology.  If you can plug your feed tube into some government agency with a fat budget, excellent.  If not, your meals will be far and wide in-between.  If you took Google's wonderfully expansive service technology and turned it into a product, will it survive?  My opinion is that it won't.

Who Needs It?

Really.  Who needs server farms?  Google does.  Who else and how many of them are there?  More importantly, are they the kind of customers with the right sense of value?  Would Yahoo or Microsoft buy it?  I don't think so.  People who need it are few and most of them are too gung-ho to be interested in buying instead of building it themselves.  Banks?  Are banks prepared to own or even rent server farms?

Who Wants It?

Swaming requires third party participants.  That cuts entire financial services sector out.  And entertainment industry is, in some ways, more conservative than the banking industry.  Will they let their latest hot movie swarm?  What a joke.

Revolution is a lonely business if you jump the gun.  Swarming and grid technologies, active or not, are ahead of its time.  If you got enough money and marketing know-how, you can hurry time.  Otherwise, you are walking into a world of hurt.  Maybe you can prevail.  Most likely not.

Swarming robots

Swarming robots 11/14/2003 01:46 PM
iRobot, the company behind the Roomba, doesn't just make robotic vacuum cleaners. They're also building robots that could group together in swarms and be used to clear landmines or rescue earthquake victims:The point of the Swarm project is to be able to program lots of robots to communicate with each other using proprietary Behavior Language software. And we're not talking about 10 or even 100 bots, but 10,000 or more. The name "Swarm" comes from the robots' ability to work like insects... The robots communicate using an infrared light signal that begins with a chosen leader (which has an antenna on its head) and then spreads to the rest. So essentially, they "talk" to each other. When this happens, the lights begin flashing. Each light has an accompanying sound. The sounds tell the robots how far away they are from each other.Read...

Self-propelled swarming robot traffic cones: nuff sed.
The new road markers have been developed by Shane Farritor, a roboticist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in a bid to help reduce the $100 billion per year that the Department of Transportation estimates is lost to the US economy through accidents and delays caused by highway lane closures.

The self-propelled markers take the form of robotic three-wheeled bases for the brightly coloured barrels that are set out to demarcate road repair zones. Farritor says they can open and close traffic lanes faster and more safely than humans.

Should The Telcos Be Scared Of VoIP?

Should The Telcos Be Scared Of VoIP? 11/11/2003 06:47 PM
Over at Business Week, they're realizing that VoIP looks damn scary to the traditional phone companies. The turning point, according to the article, was the recent announcement that IBM is going to shift most of its workforce to a VoIP solution instead of a traditional phone system. From there, they look at the media's latest VoIP darling, Skype, to point out that the telcos might be in trouble. More importantly, though, it discusses the recent moves by Stealth Communications to create a public exchange for VoIP networks. While most people think about how the various FWD, SIPPhone type applications might inter-operate, the Stealth announcement could mean that large companies using VoIP wouldn't even need to enter the old telephone network for calls outside the office. If, as is described in the article, both GE and IBM have their own VoIP systems, which connect via this exchange, the call remains entirely over IP and never has to enter the traditional phone system. The question, then, is what should a phone company do? They can't deny that this is coming, but that doesn't mean they just need to roll over and play dead. Just an hour or so ago, at the Pulver Wireless Summit, former FCC chair Reed Hundt was talking about the idea of offering free VoIP calls, and letting consumers free up the money they spend on voice to invest in true broadband access to the home. Opening up the possibilities and allowing more things to happen present new opportunities to make revenue. Holding on to legacy systems and complaining all the way down the drain does little to help anyone. That's not to say that telcos aren't going to face a drastic change in how they do things - or that they'll successfully navigate the change. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that telcos are dead.

Traditional Korean Music

Traditional Korean Music 04/07/2005 03:24 AM

I enjoy all kinds of music but I particularly enjoy traditional korean music.  If you are interested in listening to some, the best album to get started with is the OST album for the Korean movie Sopyonje.  It starts with a bamboo flute instrumental titled Thousand Year-Old Crane.  The instrument is called daekoom, my favorite instrument, which sounds similar to shakuhachi although I think it's deeper and coarser in a satisfying way that sooths the aching inside walls of your heart.  Then it moves on to several pansori songs which to me sounds like a fusion of rap and opera.  I just love pansori!  The only problem is that the CD might be difficult to find outside Korea.
