01/05/2005 03:28 AMIn the aftermath of the tsunamis that devastated Asia in late December
2004, observers pointed out that lack of official, credible
information gave victims and governments in the area little prior
warning of the impending disaster. Although still in the developmental
stages, a partnership of the Global Disaster Information Network
(GDIN) and the Organsation for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD) is creating an information system that may significantly reduce
the impact of future natural and manmade disasters. Native American
Pueblo and Navajo Nations in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado
are providing pilot sites for the GDIN system. [PRWEB Jan 5, 2005]

Emerging Tech's self-organizing
conference-within-a-conference
12/20/2003 09:44 PMAt this year's O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, there are 27
night sessions reserved from allocation by the organizers, left open
to be a "self organizing conference-within-a-conference." The idea is
that ETCON attendees propose sessions on the open wiki, and vote on
which they'd prefer to attend.
We're not looking for polished presentations. We'd prefer "white
board" sessions on your works-in-progess, rough demonstrations with
promise, concept and code (with an emphasis on running code, even if
it doesn't yet fully represent the concept). You should be prepared to
take input, answer questions, engage in discussion, and be open to
altering your conceptions and mucking about in your source. Oh, and
have a good deal of fun while you're at it.

Feedster Actually Works
Feedster Actually Works
03/14/2003 05:09 PMFeedster Actually Works
I know this going to sound silly -- but now I **know** Feedster
works. A friend of mine just bought an iPod and they were asking
me about the FM radio adapter. I know I saw one talked about in
the blog-o-sphere recently so I ran a query for iPod and came up with the result. How damn cool. It
really is like searching either your short term memory or searching
conversations you just happened to listen in on.
A lot of times developers don't actually use the things they
build. Or use them peripherally at best. It really is cool
when they work and you have that "ah ha" moment.

08/28/2004 08:52 PMDuring my home inspection they tested the air conditioner by turning

I've always been wondering if it actually worked. Today I found out.
It was 90 degrees upstairs when I decided to shut the windows and kick
on the air conditioner, set at 72 degrees. I'm happy to report that

This is how justice works
This is how justice works
01/18/2004 03:49 PMI've had a wonderful weekend. I've had time to watch four movies from
my "DVDs I am going to watch when I retire since I am never going
to have the time before that" -collection, I have eaten well,
slept - well - sufficiently, and still managed to tick off a few
"things to try before you die" -list and move them onto
"cool, I'll do that again" -list.
So, however, this evening, at a business dinner (don't ask: I know
it's Sunday) I make a complete fool of myself by showing up late
(darn). And not only that - my cough which I thought had already
vanished, decides to have its encore right at the same moment I have
introduced myself and am thirstily sipping from a glass of water. And
what an encore it was: in a surprising combination of sight and sound
the cough (with a mouthful of water) bursts out, spraying the water
across the table, completely surprising everyone. Including me.
The whole table stops, forks suspended midway between plate and mouth,
and I feel the cool and curious look of Japanese businessmen fixed on
my neck, as I try to hide and escape under the table. "Are you
ok?", I hear my boss ask faintly - and I stammer something in
reply that nearly, but not quite, sounds like "yes", cheeks
burning. Oh well, there goes my professional reputation...
I guess this is how the universe collects its debt on happiness. I
recall once, in a shower (I do a lot of my thinking in the shower), I
had a wonderful revelation. I don't recall what it was about anymore,
but it was a profound thing - enlightenment, you could say - and I was
so happy about it that the soap slipped from my hand and fell right
into the toilet. So I guess that was the more important lesson to be
learned of the two: close the lid before you shower.
Irony. The most common element in the universe. And what a wonderful
universe it is! ;-).

TopStyle 3.12 in the Works
TopStyle 3.12 in the Works
03/14/2005 06:24 PMI hadn't planned to release a new version of TopStyle so soon after
coming out with versi
on 3.11, but I've decided that one is necessary to resolve a few
remaining bugs (including this
one).
It will be a few weeks before I'm ready to post a beta of TopStyle
3.12, so it's too early for me to state exactly what will be
in the new version. But among the other issues I'll address is the
oft-reported problem of Mozilla "swallowing" the focus away from
TopStyle's editor (describe
d here). Although this bug is actually in Mozilla rather than in
TopStyle itself, I'm assuming that it will never be corrected in
Mozilla (after all, the
Bugzilla report of this problem has existed for almost two years),
so I'm going to code a workaro
und in TopStyle.
The beta will be available only to existing TopStyle customers, and
will be announced here when it's ready.
