SpyView: Freeway Pro 3.5

SpyView: Freeway Pro 3.5 12/30/2004 12:04 PM

SoftPress Systems' flagship application, Freeway Pro, is an HTML generator that offers the user the ability to create functional, professional websites without needing to hand-code their websites. Freeway Pro is not an HTML editor; it simply generates the HTML so the user doesn't have to work with the code. This is one reason why Freeway Pro differs from other popular professional website creation applications like Adobe's GoLive and Macromedia's DreamWeaver. Experience with these two applications shows just how much Freeway Pro differs in use. The application is very similar to a desktop publishing application, and allows creative individuals who are lacking the technical skills to create inventive web pages without knowing HTML or JavaScript. Included with Freeway Pro is a 40 colour page Quick Start guide as well as an extensive 393 page User Guide that includes an easy to find index and an excellent contents page. The comprehensive user guide contains many pictures and easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions for use. Freeway Pro runs on both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9. One disadvantage to this application is that there is no "Open Recent" option in the File menu, so users are expected to find the file they are working on each time they open the program. Other Freeway Pro features include WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing, support for advanced font features offered by Apple's ATSUI technology, automatic graphic conversion into Web formats, automatic image slicing, and the choice between HTML 3.2, 3.2 plus Cascading Style Sheets or HTML 4 output. Freeway Pro is available from SoftPress for $249.00 or for $189.00 for qualifying educators or students. Pros: WYSIWYG creation Easy browser previewing Works with both Mac OS 9 and OS X Cons: No HTML editing No "Open Recent" in File menu System Requirements: Mac OS X (G3, 128 MB RAM) or Mac OS 9 (64 MB RAM) If you have a product you would like Spymac to review, please contact kristie@spymac.com.

SpyView: Freeway Express 3.5 01/06/2005 03:00 PM
SoftPress Systems' consumer web site creation application provides an easy way for beginners or students to create web pages without the knowledge of HTML. A speedier version of the company's flagship application Freeway Pro, Freeway Express comes at a more affordable price but still offers the "speed, power and design flexibility of Freeway Pro." Freeway Express handles like a desktop publishing application by allowing the user to drag and drop images and text right onto the page. The program allows creative individuals who are lacking the technical skills to create inventive web pages without learning or knowing HTML. Included with Freeway Express is a Buttons FAST Pack, 29 templates, PDF tutorials and User Guide, a 40-page printed colour Quick Start Guide, as well as 15-day trial versions of Graphics FAST Pack and Navigation FAST Pack. The comprehensive user guide contains many pictures and easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions for use. Other Freeway Pro features include WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing, the choice between HTML 3.2, 3.2 plus Cascading Style Sheets or HTML 4 output, importing of TIFF, native Photoshop and Illustrator files and PDF graphics (on Mac OS X), PostScript Type 1 and OpenType fonts in addition to TrueType, custom Actions (and write your own) to automate your designs and extend Freeway, and built-in spell checking and hyphenation in 14 different languages. As with Freeway Pro, one disadvantage to this application is that there is no "Open Recent" option in the File menu. Without the "Open Recent" option, users are expected to search for the file they were working on each time they open the program rather than selecting recent Freeway Express files from a drop-down list. Freeway Express works with Mac OS 9 and OS X and is available from SoftPress for $89.00.

SpyView: iTilt 01/04/2005 12:56 PM
The iTilt is a cushioning stand designed for PowerBooks and iBooks from MaxUpgrades that combines ergonomic design and functionality. Made of a special black rubber compound, the iTilt is solidly constructed to cushion the notebook from vibration and shock while providing an optimum viewing height for the user. The user can maintain their natural upright posture while using the notebook without the need for an auxiliary keybord. Designed for the desktop, the iTilt has a front curve design that runs across the width of the notebook. This allows the notebook to be seated and gripped for maximum stability. A center groove allows for the dissipation of heat generated from the notebook and provides space to run cables, giving the user access to the side ports on the computer. The iTilt back contours uniformly and transfers the weight of the notebook to the bottom rests for a firm grip with the desktop surface. The notebook can be opened for maximum viewing and makes it easy to use the iTilt with a graphics tablet and 3D digitizers. Spymac tested the iTilt cushioning stand for the 17-inch PowerBook. While it lacks slightly in esthetics, it has become one of the tester’s favorite notebook stands because of its ergonomics and durability. Despite its relatively high retail price ($49.00 US), the iTilt is an excellent product. Pros: Provides perfect ergonomic desktop positioning of notebook computer Durable Gentle on wrists Cons: Bulky Esthetics Price If you have a product you would like reviewed, please contact news@spymac.com

SpyView: BBEdit 8.0.3

SpyView: BBEdit 8.0.3 12/24/2004 12:09 PM
It has fallen upon me to write a review for Bare Bones' latest release of BBEdit. As you read this I hope you will keep in mind that that I am a programmer by trade and not a columnist. So forgive me if this review doesn't have the same flair as something our beloved Spymac news writers might produce. That being said, BBEdit has been the undisputed champion in the field of Macintosh text editors for the past 10 years. Its abundant feature set can keep anyone from a student working on an English assignment to a programmer developing the next great app busy and productive. The search and replace functions in BBEdit are legendary, allowing the writer to search and replace text within any number of documents with a few simple clicks. Now in BBEdit 8 those features have become much more powerful. With BBEdit's new Text Factory you can create search and replace rules as easily as creating a smart playlist in iTunes. With a few short clicks you can have BBEdit scouring your project folder for all the changes you want to make in seconds. Got thousands of files you need to check and don't have the time to wait for it to finish? No problem, set Text Factory aside and let it search in the background while you continue working in BBEdit. BBEdit's new Document Drawer makes navigating through your documents easy. Switching documents is now as easy as clicking the file name in the Drawer. Moving files between windows is just easy. Simply drag and drop the file name from one window's drawer to the other and you're good to go. One of the features I really like is the ability to option-drag a file name from the drawer to my Desktop or some other folder for an instant copy. Without question the feature I value most is BBEdit's Live preview of HTML documents. Using Apple's Web Kit Framework, BBEdit will display a live preview of your page as you modify your code. Not impressed? With a couple of quick adjustments to your preferences BBEdit will even display a live preview of your PHP code as well. No more command-tabbing between Safari and back. This feature alone is bound to increase productivity for a good number of people. New features aside there are some negative aspects I feel I should point out. First and foremost are the preferences. Now I realize there is a lot that can be customized in there but it is just too easy to get lost amongst all the options. It would be nice to see this get simplified in the next release. I would also like to see a little more integration between the Documents Drawer and the Disk and FTP Browsers. Having all of your open documents in the drawer is a powerful addition. I can't help but think how much more potent it could be if a disk or FTP browser were be nested inside of it. Instant access to all of your files within a single all-knowing window. One can only hope. Pros: Rock solid, battle-hardened text editor Powerful search and replace that anyone can master Document Drawer for instant access to all of your open documents Live preview of PHP documents Cons: Confusing preference panel Document Drawer could be more useful System Requirements: Mac OS X 10.3.5 or later If you have a product you would like Spymac to review, please contact news@spymac.com

SpyView: Microsoft's Optical Mouse by
S+arck

SpyView: Microsoft's Optical Mouse by
S+arck
09/15/2004 01:54 PM
"Wow, it's cool," were the first words of Spymac co-founder Kevin April (AtariST) after plugging in <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productd etails.aspx?pid=027" target="_blank">Microsoft's Optical Mouse by S+arck</a>. But are good looks all this rodent has going for it? Microsoft <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/jul04/07-08St arckOMPR.asp" target="_blank">introduced</a> the new mouse by interior and industrial designer, Phillipe Starck, along with a line of special edition mice back in July. <center><img src="http://www.spymac.com/upload/newscat/pic_47.jpg">< ;/center> "People are doing such amazing things with their computers; however, too often the importance of the link between man and machine is underestimated," Starck <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/jul04/07-08St arckOMPR.asp" target="_blank">said</a>. "[The mouse we use] defines us just as much as the clothes we wear or the music we listen to. With this in mind, I set out to design an artistic bridge that would help people connect with the technology they use every day. The result is modern and refreshingly simple, and will transform the mouse into a badge item that makes a statement about your taste and personality." If this mouse makes a statement about the users personality, then it would show that the user is simple, sleek and glowing from the inside. The mouse has a similar design as Apple's Pro Mouse, but the S+arck mouse has a scroll wheel and two buttons that run the entire length of the mouse. As for design, the S+arck's silvery-grey colouring does not compliment Apple's consumer line (eMacs, iMacs and iBooks), though it would look quite flashy when hooked up to a PowerBook, PowerMac G5, or when used with a new Apple display. "The First Museum-Quality Mouse" features a blue (or orange) stripe down the middle separating the two buttons. When plugged in, light shines up through the stripe and the scroll wheel to create an ultra-modern blue or orange lighting effect. Compared to older Microsoft mice, this USB-only mouse tracks much smoother, thanks to recent improvements in Microsoft's optical technology. The mouse scrolls nicely; better than the first-generation 5 button <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22 &pcid=f918997d-8a10-49a2-86d4-350fc658f447&type=ovr" target="_blank">IntelliMouse Explorer</a> that I use at home, and better than the two button <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22 &pcid=683c57a7-1f50-442c-ad1d-c262417da635&type=ovr" target="_blank">Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1</a> that I normally use here at work. The mouse doesn't fit as nicely in my hand because of the odd shape, though Microsoft describes the design as a "<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productd etails.aspx?pid=027" target="_blank">unique hemisphere (suitable for both left and right-hand users) that makes [the mouse] feel natural and puts left and right clicking in the palm of your hand.</a>" After using it for one day, the right button began to squeak; not something I would expect from <i>this</i> type of mouse. (No pun intended.) The S+arck optical mouse sells for $34.95. If looks are important to you and if you want a two button optical mouse that compliments the PowerBook, PowerMac or Apple Cinema display, then this is the mouse to buy. Otherwise, any other two button scroll wheel mouse would do, and they would cost less than half of the price. {_seal} If you have a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to <a href="mailto:kristie@spymac.com">kristie@spymac.com</a >

Author Scott Kelby has written an easy-to-read book that any serious Adobe Photoshop user is sure to want on their desk for easy access to the more than 100 “classic” Photoshop projects. Step-by-step, Kelby walks the reader through techniques that result in the stunning, professional effects that you see everyday in magazines, on billboards, in newspapers and on the Internet. Examples of the projects include using one photo as the background and focal point; creating chrome bevelled type; tinting black and white photos and creating reflections and various shadowing techniques. Kelby states simply that “these are the effects your clients expect you to know if you are a professional Photoshop user”. Kelby, editor of Photoshop User magazine and author of several bestselling Photoshop books, has cut the learning time dramatically for newer users of the program. Photoshop Classic Effects doesn’t require you to work through one tutorial after another, but enables you to easily find the project you’re interested in using, which is why you’ll want to keep it handy for future reference. Kelby has used language throughout the book that is easy to understand and provides the user commands for both Mac and Windows platforms. The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photographs by Brand X Pictures. If you want to follow along using the same photos Kelby used in his projects, the low-res images are available for download at http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/classicphotos. If you’re interested in this book, but still undecided whether to make the purchase, you might want to try a few of Kelby’s samples for yourself. Publisher Peach Pit Press has included some of the author’s step-by-step projects on a tip sheet which is available for download from http://www.peachpit.com/title/0321272250#.
