California, the immigrant's paradise

California, the immigrant's paradise 04/09/2004 04:11 PM

The tour of the Salk Institute yesterday reminded me of what a land of opportunity California has been for immigrants.  Jonas Salk was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants (bio) and obtained enough funding from the March of Dimes to develop the polio vaccine (perfected in the mid 1950s; our tour guide said that the disease was due to be eradicated from the world by now but Muslims in places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan are refusing to take the vaccine because they believe it causes sterility).  By 1960 Salk had obtained $20 million to build the Salk Institute and hired Louis Kahn (bio), who'd emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 5.

It seems that nearly every corner of California has been a place where an immigrant's dream has come true.

Akihabara is geek sex paradise

Akihabara is geek sex paradise 06/29/2004 08:11 PM
The Japanese town of Akihabara has become a legendary gadget shopping destination -- this story examines its odd brand of nerd sociology. Spotlight on girls named "Pudding," synthetic mating rituals, and 'no-pan' cafes where miniskirted hottie waitresses going commando serve you rice cakes with a smile.
The area has undergone something of a makeover recently with posters and figures of animated beautiful girls plastered all over the place and the emergence of cafes and restaurants devoted to "cosplay," featuring girls dressed as animated heroes, maids, etc. Even a public area, such as the floor space of JR Akihabara station, has got into the act, with a 3-meter-round poster of the face of a beautiful girl appearing in an animation video. Kiichiro Morikawa, a professor at the Kuwasawa Design Research Institute, said, "An increasing number of animation goods and game shops have opened their doors and changed the area into an 'otaku' (geek) Mecca." Psychologists say these "otaku" or geeks are regressive, have poor social ability, and have never fully matured as adults. "Therefore, they are not good at communicating with others, cannot date real human beings, and instead adore an imaginary character," said one.

Alley
06/05/2005 11:42 PM
Xeni Jardin: This morning I went to the LA garment district knockoff haven known as Santee Alley, with pals Jeff Koga and Sean Bonner. We found lots of neat-o bootleg crap, including these awesome framed pirat e gangsta artworks (bad unauthorized photocopy of a still from Scarface on one side, and little diorama of toy machine gun, fake money, and blinged out bullets on the other side). Other finds included scrol ling digital LED belt buckles, clothing stores promising plus size fashions for "Phat Women", toy laptops running pirated warez, and much more. The best we can't blog yet... stay tuned for a report on the best booty of pirate-town, slated to run in Wired News on Tuesday (with photos shot by Sean and Jeff).

Early Exits

Early Exits 06/17/2005 04:32 PM
Recently a news story in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has led to widespread outrage. In her article, columnist Susan Paynter tells a story about a Mom and son who have been relentlessly pursued by USMC recruiters since her son's 17th birthday. The Mom appears to be anti-military. The son seems to be weak-willed. When in the presence of his Mom, his words are anti-military but his resolve is weak. Without his Mom, he listens to the recruiters and goes with them when asked. Public opinion is divided. Some proclaim the story as an example of over zealous warmongers. Some are sorrowed by the tarnishing of the military image caused by zealots. Others are angry at a controlling Mom. A few go so far as to call her unpatriotic. Shots were even taken at the son for not having enough backbone to either stand up to the recruiters or stand up to his Mom. Much of the anger directed at the recruiters is born of fear. People are afraid that their loved ones will be impressed into the military against their will. This fear is groundless. Even after signing papers and taking the oath, it's possible to make an early exit.

It's Daylight Savings Time, so that means Game.Ars is a day early. Actually, Thursday night is the new slot for Carl's heapin' helpin' of gaming goodness. As always, Game.Ars brings you the scoop on the week's news, including a reason to start thinking about your next PC upgrade:

Age 3 will support fixed-function cards, all the way up to the newer shader model 3.0 cards. Obviously, the better your machine, the nicer your game will look. I would easily expect that the game has enough high-end graphical features that most folks won't be able to crank it all the way up right away.

Is that Radeon X800 still looking good to you? There's more this week, including an update on the seventh installment in the Tomb Raider Series, another Sims 2 expansion pack, and more.
