How Many Appliances Do You Need?
03/28/2005 08:19 AMAt the DEMO conference last month, it seemed like every company that
wasn't pitching a blogging/RSS solution was selling some kind of
"appliance" computer to stick in your rack. There was even one
company selling a blogging appliance (hitting both hot trends in one
shot). Basically, these appliances were simply taking software that
the company wrote and putting it on a cheap computer. Every one of
these appliances seemed to come in a different day-glo color, making
you wonder if they all coordinated before hand, so that the
fluorescent orange appliance didn't get confused with the pearly white
one. It made some of the attendees wonder what sort of CIO wanted a
rack full of these different appliances (no matter how colorful).
However, some apparently believe that
going the appliance route
makes sense. It's not clear why, though. While the claim is ease
of setup, it seems like it only makes things much more complex down
the road. You suddenly have to manage ten different boxes when you
could have done it just fine with one or two boxes and some software.

Connected appliances come home
Connected appliances come home
11/05/2003 12:09 PMWestinghouse (yes, that Westinghouse) is coming out with a line
connected home appliances running Windows CE .NET that includes a
connected microwave oven (pictured at right), a coffee maker, and a
bread maker. All the appliances are joined together via the "Home
Hub," a combination CD player/FM radio/alarm clock which connects to
the Internet and can let you remotely control your appliances. There's
also the iCEBOX, which we've mentioned on the site before, a kitchen
PC with a flip down LCD screen and a wireless keyboard that can be
used to access your other connected appliances. Both the connected
microwave and bread maker even come with UPC barcode readers which can
automatically know how to prepare your food by scanning the packaging
of whatever it is you want to eat (and download new UPC information
for new products automatically over the Internet), while the connected
coffee maker can remind you...

Trendy appliances break down more, and
their owners don't care
06/05/2005 11:42 PMCory Doctorow:
Which? magazine, the UK equivalent of Consumer Reports, reports that
Dyson, Smeg and other trendy appliance brands are less reliable than
their less fashionable cousins, but are still highly rated by their
owners. (also: "Smeg!")
Within six years of purchase 29% of upright Dyson vacuum cleaners and
22% of their cylinder vacuums needed repairing. The Dyson repair rate
is also getting worse. A 2002 survey found that 21% of the company's
upright vacuums needed repairing within six years, and a 2001 survey
revealed that 14% of its cylinder vacuums broke down.
But despite ranking low in reliability, Dyson owners are still
relatively likely to recommend the products to a friend. An average of
38% would recommend their Dyson, making it the fifth most popular
vacuum cleaner, despite being the least reliable of those surveyed.
Separate tests by Which? have proved the Dyson cleaners to be among
the most effective vacuums, despite them breaking down more. "It's a
real shame [that Dysons break down]", the magazine says, "because its
vacs are the only upright models we've found that clean really well."
