Why Customers Hate Interactive Voice
Response
03/14/2003 01:28 AM
Interactive voice response is a cruel Catch-22 for companies. By automating routine requests or customer service interactions, companies can save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on having a customer service rep perform the same task. But, except for very basic chores, such as checking a bank balance, consumers flat-out despise them.

Why Voice over IP Is on Hold

Why Voice over IP Is on Hold 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which allows enterprises to transmit voice calls over data networks, was supposed to make copper telephone networks obsolete and save companies millions of dollars in communication costs. But those ambitious goals have yet to be realized. Why are companies still hesitant to deploy VoIP on a wide scale?

Sounds like VoIP has hit the mainstream--there were stories both on All Things Considered and Marketplace last night and, while NPR isn't quite Fox News (Something I'm very happy about) it's a lot more mainstream than slashdot. VoIP is the next big thing in phone service, or so you'd think. And, to an extent, it is. I know how the phone system is set up now (My dad worked for AT&T for decades) and it's a marvel in some ways. Phone systems, as they stand now, are circuit-switched networks, that is when you make a call to someone else there's...

Voice? Who Needs Voice?

Voice? Who Needs Voice? 05/24/2004 03:05 AM
While the telecom industry struggles over issues about whether or not they're losing voice revenue to mobile phones and VoIP systems (even as they try to offer those services themselves), some are beginning to wonder if the whole concept of vo ice communications is losing much of its appeal. Now, obviously, it's never going to go away completely - and there are plenty of reasons why it's nice to actually hear the voice of the person you're communicating with - but increasingly communications that were traditionally done by voice are now being done by email, instant message, SMS text message or even by the web. So, no matter how hard the telcos fight over how the voice market proceeds, it could be a dwindling market. That's not to say the telcos aren't making a big push into data as well - it's just to note that the "cash cow" of voice that they all treasure could have a shorter lifespan than they expect.

Authentic voice

Authentic voice 06/21/2004 07:32 AM
Yesterday, during a conversation — telephonic! — with Jeneane, the question of what constitutes "authentic voice" arose. I dislike the word "authenticity" although I use it because it gets at something we all (?) sense is there: We know there are phonies, so we need words to express non-phoniness. "Sincere" works when we're talking about the possible gap between feelings and expressions. "Integrity" applies to behavior that consistently matches principles. Authenticity refers to a possible gap in our very being, whatever that means. (But it seems to mean something.) While we need the word, applying it to voice gets...

Nintendo DS to Have Wi-Fi Voice Over IP 08/31/2004 03:07 PM

Information has come out about Nintendo's upcoming DS handheld's ability to serve as a voice-over-IP handset, allowing DS gamers to make phone calls when connected to a Wi-Fi access point. There's no word if the service will allow DS users to call other, regular phones or not. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably more likely that DS users will be able to chat to other DS users, and not serve as an actual phone. (Thanks, John!)

The Mobile Phone Is Killing The Red
Telephone Booth In The UK
06/22/2004 02:02 PM
While there have been plenty of stories about how mobile phones are killing off payphones, nowhere is such a story as upsetting to people as in the UK, where the distinctive red telephone booths are quickly disappearing, making it more and more difficult for tourists to get a picture in front of one. While there are a variety of reasons for the removal of such phone booths, including accessibility problems for the disabled, the main reason is simply that they're increasingly obsolete when everyone has a mobile phone. Of course, this is leading to a brisk business in reselling the phone booths for collectors who are turning them into lawn ornaments, conversation pieces, or even as part of a home bar.

Democracy is a conversation

Democracy is a conversation 03/19/2003 10:24 PM
From William Du Bois, from a mailing list I'm on: Bush's Utopian Plan for Peace and mine differ at the core. Hal Pepinsky, one of the founders of peacemaking criminology, talks about the dynamics of democracy and violence. He defines democracy as responsiveness — we take each other into account. We may not change our agenda but we take what the Other has to say into account. Violence is the opposite of democracy. It is asserting your own will and refusing to take the other into account......

The ever evolving conversation

The ever evolving conversation 03/26/2005 04:33 PM

For about three years now - I'm been hemming and hawing and giving people a hard time and (apparently) acting belligerent - about Open Identities.

About the notion of open DNS-like indices of people. And what we could do with them. You see I spent much of teh 90's desinging systems that relied uypon a theoretical notion - that noadasys is called social software and social networking. And at the core of that - is digital identity.

So as the world has caught up with my ideas, it's becoming more and more important that we DO IT RIGHT!

Now Tribe is calling that the PeopleWeb, Microsoft has a [can't talk about it but will soon] platform and Dick Hardt and his Sxip Networks is rolling out.

Along the way the Identity Commons has launched their i-Names effort and PingID continues to lead in the open source Liberty Alliance (and other enterprise protocols) space.

So Doc cautions us and says "we're barely srarted."

No shit - Sherlock.

But like I said - it's all happening. I just wish Dave Winer were part of the conversation - too.
