HOWTO Make high-quality recordings from an iPod

HOWTO Make high-quality recordings from
an iPod
12/30/2004 04:31 AM

Cory Doctorow: Phillip Torrone's article on Hack-a-Day explains how to trick out your iPod to get it to record audio really well, bypassing the crippling restrictions imposed by Apple:

apple cripples recording on an ipod so belkin and griffin then have to sell us add-on devices for over $50 that can only record at 8khz, which is all pretty shitty. apparently (the rumor is) apple does this so people don’t use their ipods to record stuff they think we shouldn’t, like concerts, whatever.

but don’t worry, there’s a way around it and you can record at high quality, all for free.

HOWTO make a gravity-defying room

HOWTO make a gravity-defying room 03/24/2005 02:22 PM
David Pescovitz: Two UC Berkeley students explain how they transformed their co-op room into a mind-bending, gravity-defying suite of surreality:
Ordinary-Creators-400The way this all got started was that my friend and i were sitting around at dinner chatting about what to do for the upcoming room-to-room party. We went through a whole bunch of ideas for room themes. And then — you know how, sometimes when you're bored, you look up and imagine what it would be like if gravity turned upside down and you got to walk around on the ceiling? (Does everyone have this daydream?) Anyway, we both mentioned it at the same time, and then it dawned on us that we could make it happen. Or a variant, anyway. I think sideways actually works better than upside-down, because then you can integrate real people into the scene in strange ways.

HOWTO: Make a file sharing system.

HOWTO: Make a file sharing system. 06/22/2005 01:58 AM
The RIAA and many other local facsimiles in nations outside the USA are aggressively persuing file sharers. More and more files on the file sharing services available are fakes; they do not contain what they portend to be, or contain only 5 to 7 seconds on a loop. Leechers reduce the average download speed considerably. Some manage to circumvent most of these problems but do not offer satisfactory search. In short, there are plenty of reasons why it's time to introduce Yet Another File Sharing Service. This time, let's do it right. Read on for a detailed description of how solve all the problems that current file sharing systems are struggling with.

HOWTO solve identity theft: make banks

HOWTO solve identity theft: make banks
responsible
04/15/2005 11:59 AM
Cory Doctorow: Bruce Schneier's op-ed on CNet about identity theft talks about why "two-factor" authentication (e.g. having to enter a password and a number that you read off of a little keychain fob) is useful for lots of things, but not for preventing identity theft. He goes on to explain how to practically solve identity theft through new liability measures:
Criminals impersonate legitimate users to financial intuitions. That means that any solution can't involve the account holders. That leaves only one reasonable answer: Financial intuitions need to be liable for fraudulent transactions.

They need to be liable for sending erroneous information to credit bureaus based on fraudulent transactions. They can't say that the user must keep his password secure or his machine virus-free. They can't require the user to monitor his accounts for fraudulent activity, or his credit reports for fraudulently obtained credit cards.

Those aren't reasonable requirements for most users. The bank must be made responsible, regardless of what the user does.

If you think this won't work, look at credit cards. Credit card companies are liable for all but the first $50 of fraudulent transactions. They're not hurting for business; and they're not drowning in fraud, either. They've developed and fielded an array of security technologies designed to detect and prevent fraudulent transactions. And they've pushed most of the actual costs onto the merchants.

How to Make iPod Video Work

How to Make iPod Video Work 02/05/2005 09:12 PM

Quite simply the reason the iPod Video didn't come out is that the only video that's copyright-free is the stuff you make in iMovie (well, you own the copyright, so it's more of a non-issue than copyright-free). Frankly, I know few people wanting to copy their movies of weddings, kids, and cats onto a device to view them elsewhere. What we want are our TV programs and DVD movies.

So Apple, to make the iPod Video work, would need a PVR app (and hardware). Then Apple can let you create content that is free of issues (personal recording is allowed, regardless of the 1984 world the MPAA wants us to live in) and encode it in H.264/AVC so that it can scale down to the iPod level well (it's also used in 3G phones, so the iPod is a no-brainer). Set it up to record whatever you want, select "iPod" as the recording destination and then you get a file that is as small as it can be to give good quality on the iPod. Or choose "TV" and then use the supplied A/V cables to view on a random TV somewhere (use those front inputs on that TV in the break room at work!).

Do this, and the world will follow quite quickly. Make it simple, Apple simple, and the portable media market is Apple's. Get a foothold in music and video and the iPod will clobber all the other devices.

It's not so crazy, and it just might work. Hell, it might kill TiVo if done right, and I love mine as much as the next guy.

Do high schools make sense in an age of
jets and Internet?

Do high schools make sense in an age of
jets and Internet?
07/13/2004 07:02 PM

I've recently finished up the school year doing volunteer tutoring in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts's most expensive (and one of the worst-performing) public high schools, right across the street here in Cambridge.  Simultaneously I've been reading some articles about the most expensive high school ever built in the United States, the $286 million Belmont Learning Center in Los Angeles (b ackground article).  I'm beginning to wonder if the idea of a local public high school isn't just a leftover habit from the 19th century when international travel was expensive and time-consuming and telecommunications did not exist.

Suppose that you had a 16-year-old named Johnnie and the $14,000 per year that the local school district will spend to keep him occupied for a year.  If there were no Boeing 747s, cheap telephones, or Internet you might want to send him to a nearby school.  But for less than $2000 we can send that kid anywhere in the world and bring him back for Christmas and Spring Break.  For a few cents per minute we can pick up the phone and talk to our kid regardless of where he happens to be.

Hmm... maybe we can send Johnnie to China for one year.  He will go to an elite private boarding school and learn Mandarin, probably the most useful language for business, aside from English, for the foreseeable future.  With the money left over from the $14,000 after subtracting for airfare and school fees we can send Johnnie on a backpacking tour around Australia during his summer break.  Next year, because Johnnie was never that great at math, maybe we'll send him to India to be tutored 1:1 by a math PhD (compare to being one of 25 students in a classroom led by a teacher only slightly ahead of the better students).  The $12,000 we have left over after paying for airfare is more than the salary of a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, one of the world's finest universities.  So Johnnie can also learn how to manage a few servants and maybe play some polo.  For Johnnie's last year before college maybe it would be good if he learned fluent Spanish and got to know our neighbors in Latin America.  So we send him off to Argentina or Mexico to attend one of their finest private schools.

Wouldn't Johnnie be a lot better prepared to distinguish himself among college applicants with such an education?  And better prepared to get a job in a global economy?  Maybe the best option to settle the debate over what kind of high school is best is "no high school".

More than 2,000 Christian medical professionals, church leaders, and students gathered for the ninth annual Global Missions Health Conference, November 11-13, at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. They spoke not only of statistics that confirmed the extent of the pandemic (43 million people living with HIV/AIDS; 8,000 deaths each day; 14 million orphans), but of working together.

Apple
09/03/2004 08:23 AM
Asustek Computer has received OEM orders for the iPod mini digital music player from Apple Computer, according to market sources. Asustek is the second Taiwan-based manufacturer of the digital devices since Inventec Appliances also produces the iPod for Apple. Asustek will assemble and ship the iPod to Apple from its plant in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province (China), the sources said.

The iPod orders will help Asustek in working toward its goal of becoming a key provider of consumer electronics products, the sources noted. In related news, Inventec is expected to continue to supply Apple with its current iPod models. In addition, Inventec is also likely to secure orders for a similar version of the iPod from Hewlett-Packard (HP), the sources said. Apple and HP entered into an agreement earlier this year for HP to resell the iPod under the HP brand.

Asustek and Inventec both declined to comment on the report, citing client confidentiality
