Monetary donations are now being accepted for Spymac’s Asian Disaster Relief Fund set up today to help the International Red Cross meet the needs of 11 countries affected by the devastating earthquake which struck the area two days ago. Spymac is an international community and many members have been affected by the tragedy. We extend our condolences to members in that region. Donations to the Spymac relief fund can be made using PayPal. Members making donations of $25 or more will receive ad-free status on their membership for a two-week period. Donations will be accepted until January 16, 2005. On that day, Spymac will celebrate its third birthday by turning the fund over to the Red Cross. Upon request, official tax-deductible receipts will be issued by the Red Cross. Food, medical supplies and water purification systems have started trickling into the devastated areas, as the United Nations warned this could be the biggest relief effort ever known. The body count has risen to more than 60,000 dead in 11 countries, with thousands still missing and more than a million left homeless. The UN estimates that nearly a third of the dead are children. The International Red Cross says more than one million people have been displaced and many have had to resort to looting to survive.

I just heard on the news another reason to give as much as you can to the tsunami relief effort. Congress is well on its way to approving legislation to allow all money donated to a recognized charity by January 31st to be 100% deductible from LAST YEAR’S tax bill. It’s not the reason to donate, but since it may not end up costing you anything out of your pocket, it could well be easier…

Joey DeVilla has a blog entry on a Boston blogger whose house burned down this weekend: there's a PayPal donation box to help the poor guy out.

About 5 or 10 minutes later I started smelling smoke and heard my dad looking in the attic outside my room. It was now he started screaming, "The house is REALLY on fire. Get anything you can and get out!" He said this as he walked down the stairs and when he came back in after putting something outside.

I was a bit panicked and shaken but I grabbed my backpack and threw my computers in it and put on some pants. I should have probably put on the pants with my wallet in them, but for some reason I didn't. And I should have probably got a jacket as well seeing as it is so cold now.

The Tsunami Tragedy that has affected South Asia, India and Africa has to be the worst disaster of our lifetime. We feel that the Salvation Army has one of the best records in actually delivering the funds to the needy. We have heard all types of advertisements and plea’s for donation from all types of organizations, some are well known but others just seem to come out of nowhere! We have yet to hear much about The Salvation Army, and their ongoing or current efforts so we wanted to try to help them the best way we know how. My 14 year old is going thru her 4th Hurricane of her life. She experienced Typhoons when we lived in Guam and I know they scared her to death. As a worried dad I will have to wait some more anxious days before I get the call from her or her mother letting me she is ok and the damage incurred.

I have always championed the American Red Cross as they helped me in my time of need when I was surviving 37 days without electricity/water after Typhoon Omar some years ago. Please get out your credit cards and make a donation.

Ah! Relief at last!

I'm happy to report that yeste rday's surgery was a big success. I had five large disk fragments removed from my cervical spine, and when I woke from the procedure I immediately noticed that the pain in my left arm was completely gone (ahhhh!). I won't be doing much computer work for a week or so, but as you can see, I'm well enough the day after the surgery to move around and do some light typing.

Many thanks to all those who wished me well yesterday - I'm grateful for your kindness.
