Laser Comb, Only $695 06/18/2004 11:33 AM

hair_growth.jpg image

My hair isn't falling out (yet), but if it were, I could probably hire another monkey to nest on my dome for far less than the $700 price of the Laser Comb. And if I were worried that the Laser Comb was just some psuedo-science scam, I could rest assured that, "anecdotal evidence indicates that patients have seen improvements in hair quality and thickness with healthier scalps."

Eye Dazzling Laser

Eye Dazzling Laser 01/04/2005 11:12 AM

super_daz.jpg imageFirst, I should say: I'm sorry about shining those laser pointers at the jets. I just thought they'd crash or something—I didn't realize people would get all freaked out. I promise never to do it again, but as my influence over military spending is patchy at best (my line iteming of R&D for a carbon-fiber "Super Bong" actually made it pretty far up the chain, but was nixed for being potentially "too 'Peace on Earthy'"), I can't promise that the military won't develop laser blasting pulses designed to blind and disorient both mechanical and meat-based targets. In fact, they already have.

Shocking Laser Tag

Shocking Laser Tag 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

laser_shockers.jpgThe most interactive laser tag systems to date simply vibrate when shot, but stop short of inflicting any real pain. Herein lies their fatal flaw, and Gadget Shop has set out to fix this error with their Shocking Guns—a laser tag set that shocks the user when shot by an opponent. It offers two degrees of shock power and "may interfere with electrical devices such as pacemakers," if that weren't already obvious. Each $45 kit comes with two guns and two breastplates, as well as the six AAA batteries required for them.

DIY CO2 Laser CNC Table

DIY CO2 Laser CNC Table 03/19/2005 02:54 AM
Owen White bought a Coherent G100 100 Watt CO2 laser on eBay and decided to create his own CNC table. He chronicled his construction project in his blog. He is now using his DIY CNC table to cut all sorts of things. Owen writes, "Your readers might be interested in the documentation on the computer controlled circuitry to run the CNC table and laser. For circuit prototyping I used some conventional off-the-shelf electronics packages to design the circuits, then mapped the net diagrams from the circuit software to locations on a wire-wrap board using some perl code. This simplified the process of staring at a circuit and deciding where wire-wrap connections should be made. Prototype PCBs were also made. I used AVR microcontrollers for a couple functions."

Blu-Laser Cinema Player 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

blulas_cin.jpgI'll cop to being a little unsure exactly what the Blu-Laser Cinema Player is exactly, at least from a format perspective. I think it's Blu-ray, since they mention that in their press release, but I'm not entirely sure. I did put together that the $6k player isn't exactly meant for home use, instead marketed towards content producers who need to screen high-def works-in-progress while at home. And adding confusion to the strange, each model of the Cinema Player is built-to-order, but the only customization is which codec it uses. Why not use them all?

Jet pilots complains about laser

Jet pilots complains about laser 12/30/2004 02:46 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: A commercial airline pilot said that a laser beam entered the cockpit of his plane for several seconds on Monday, while it was 8,500 feet in the air. Air traffic controllers determined that the source of the laser came from a neighborhood in Warrensville Heights, near Cleveland. The FBI is investigating. And in September, a Delta pilot's eye was injured from a laser beam while he was landing a plane in Salt Lake City. Here's the LA Times article about this.

2622814 A4C0D5579F M I'm wondering if the idiots who are doing this are using lasers like the ones sold at Lasershoppe.com. Wow: I just went to lasershoppe to read more about the $600 lasers the site sells (which can burn holes through plastic cups, and I learned that they are no longer selling lasers because they don't want to have anything to do with people who would use their lasers maliciously. They link to a CNN article that says six commercial jets have had their cockpits illuminated by laser beams in the last four days. (Photo by Phillip Torrone)

UPDATE: Patricio Lopez sez: A while ago the Ask the Pilot colum at Salon dealt with the whole lase threat issue. Excerpt:

For the record, even a well-aimed laser would be highly unlikely to cause a crash. Hitting both pilots cleanly in the face, through a refractive wraparound windshield, would require a great deal of luck, and even a temporarily blinded crew would still have the means to avoid disaster. Do not equate the results of a laser strike with, for example, having to drive sightless through a busy intersection. Maintaining a jet's stability would be challenging under the circumstances, but not impossible.

There are plenty of people who have been working on better ways to transmit data across planets as we reach further out into space. When the Mars Rover had problem s it took some time to fix it, in part due to the slow data rate transfer from here to Mars (and back). However, NASA scientists are now working on a method to use a laser to beam data at a rate between one million and 30 million bits per second -- quite a bit faster than today's radio transmissions.

Microsoft supporting Blue Laser? What
about Blu-Ray?
08/01/2004 12:39 AM
There’s something disingenuous about the announcement this week from Microsoft Japan that it will make Longhorn, the company’s next major operating system release, compatible with the High Definition blue laser DVD from NEC and Toshiba, which is also backed by the DVD Forum. Since when was Longhorn written in Japan? And since when did an operating system company decide on support for a peripheral which will need its own dedicated drivers and which can be made almost plug compatible with the current DVD drives, as far as the operating system is concerned.

In our view it was a major non-announcement. The competing Blu-Ray specification is already streets ahead of the NEC Toshiba standard, and it has already established support from Hewlett-Packard and Dell, which is far more significant than Microsoft, since they are the customers here and they will actually buy the drives. Microsoft is hardly likely to turn around to its two biggest customers and tell them, no the operating system won’t recognize their DVD devices.
