Opinion: I'd like to think the company's future grid-computing operating system is a reflection of Microsoft's desire to do something really new and different for its customers. The problem with the future is that it's often blocked by the present, which in Microsoft's case is as hard to get beyond as it is to change.

WE READ with some bemusement that the victory Microsoft had with the European Union recently was down to the PR flair of Steve "there's a kind of hush" Ballmer. Because he negotiated with the EU rather than Bill Gates, resulting in its famous antitrust victory, and resulting in a big fine and a cut down version of Windows, if the ruling stands.

Developer Clarkwood Software announced on Monday the release of Peek-a-Boo 2.0, a new version of its system monitoring utility that now runs in Mac OS X. It allows you to view all processes running on your Mac -- including native Mac OS X applications, programs running in Classic and lower-level Darwin processes -- with the ability to kill them or modify their priorities. A graph shows how much of the CPU usage each process consumes and a CPU Usage History window displays the information over time. Peek-a-Boo is US$20 and requires Mac OS X v10.2 or higher.
