South African villages to get digital

South African villages to get digital
cinema network
04/05/2005 09:23 PMXeni Jardin:
Excerpt from
Variety article:
The vast majority of South Africa's 40-million people have never been
to the cinema, kept away by the legacy of apartheid, poverty and
language barriers. But the nation's exhibs are hoping to change that
by using the indigenous filmmaking along with digital technology to
connect to the missing multitudes (...)
Starting in September, Shout Africa will roll out 20 digital cinemas
around the country where facilities are most lacking, to make the
movies affordable and accessible. Shout Africa chief executive Lance
Samuels says that for local producers, these cinemas will provide
another distribution outlet as well as the opportunity to build new
audiences.
Locally produced films in indigenous languages and English will be
shown alongside foreign features, with subtitles in the vernacular
language of the region of the cinema.Besides the usual popcorn and
soft drinks, popular traditional township foods such as maize
porridge, spicy sausages, samp (hominy), mealies (corn on the cob) and
fried chicken will be on sale to help make the d-cinema experience
more African.
Samuels says d-cinemas will be located in revamped township community
centers to create a quality experience, including comfortable chairs,
high quality digital projection and state of the art surround sound.
And, hoping to seal the deal, prices will be much lower than at urban
multiplexes.
Wonder what kind of gear the company will be installing? Will this be
true cinema-grade digital projection, or something cruddier and
lower-res (and, hence, more affordable)? Either way, it's fascinating
news, and points to one of the greatest promises of this technology.
Which hardware manufacturer(s) will be involved?
Here's more info on the "Shout Africa" d-cinema initiative, Link,

company that promotes the South African television and film industry.

06/05/2005 11:52 PMOne of the most interesting presentations at this
fantastic
conference was given by Eve Gray, of Eve Gray & Associates. Gray
was asked to study the publishing strategy of the Human Sciences
Research Council (HSRC) in South Africa. This research institution had
a traditional strategy of publishing lots of research books, and
selling them. Gray convinced them to change their strategy -- to give
away all their research books for free online, and offer a high
quality print-on-demand service for anyone who wants the paper
version. The result: "the sales turnover of the publishing department
has risen by 300%." As she concluded her presentation, "giving away
books and lead to an increase in our book sales." There's much much
more in her interesting analysis. She has generously offered it for
downloading. Here's the
press
release.

The Return Of Inventors
The Return Of Inventors
04/19/2004 03:09 PMWe all know the stories of the big name inventors from a century ago:
Thomas Edisons, Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers (among,
many many others) who all came up with unique new products. Over the
last century, though, the role of the inventor has faded. Corporate
research began to take over, and as such, the incentives skewed more
towards focusing on innovation, rather than pure research and
invention. However, now, a few companies are
l
ooking to swing the pendulum back the other way and bring back the age
of the inventor. While the article makes it out to be something
new, I'm not so sure that's accurate. A number of companies have
tried to build themselves up around performing basic research, and
many have struggled when that research failed to produce anything that
could eventually be commercialized. Still, there's nothing wrong with
encouraging invention - it just remains to be seen if it's really
possible to create companies that are only focused on invention
creation.
NASA Sets Aside $400,000 For Inventors
NASA Sets Aside $400,000 For Inventors
03/24/2005 02:47 PMNASA liked the idea of the X Prize spaceship competition so much
that they are using that same idea to help develop a wireless power
transmission system and super strong tethers. The contests will be run
by the Spaceward Foundation and will start in October of this
year.
You can read more about it at MSNBC
… In the most common
power-beaming scenario, energy in the form of light or microwaves is
transmitted through space from a power source to remote receivers,
where photoelectric cells convert the light energy into electricity.
NASA has already tested one such system for keeping
unmanned air vehicles aloft, and the technology might come in handy
for long-duration aerial reconnaissance missions on Mars. The concept
also be used for distributing power from, say, a nuclear power station
on the moon or Mars to other outposts. As
for the tethers, Sponberg said the same super-strong materials could
be adapted to make next-generation spacecraft lighter and more
resilient. "You can imagine layers of carbon nanotubes being laid
down, much like we do with composites today — and that's what we
would take away," he said.
