Framsticks is a three-dimensional life simulation project. Both mechanical structures (“bodies”) and control systems (“brains”) of creatures are modeled. It is possible to design various kinds of experiments, including simple optimization (by evolutionary algorithms), coevolution, open-ended and spontaneous evolution, distinct gene pools and populations, diverse genotype/phenotype mappings, and species/ecosystems modeling.
Current Framsticks users work on evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, neural networks, biology, robotics and simulation, cognitive science, neuroscience, medicine, philosophy, virtual reality, graphics, and art. The system can be interesting for experimenters who would like to evolve their own artificial creatures and see them in a three-dimensional, virtual world. MSNBC reports that electrical devices in the town of Canneto di Caronia, Sicily have been spontaneously combusting. It's gotten so bad that the entire town had to be evacuated. The power company removed the town from the grid and put it on a generator, until the generator also caught fire.

A Maryland couple has plans to build their own Hobbit Hole dwelling, and has set up a website to raise funds for it and to share progress updates.

The floorplan sketch that Rob has provided on his info page doesn't quite follow my interpretation of Tolkien's description of Bilbo Baggins' Hobbit Hole. But even so, it is an interesting project, both from a construction and a funding standpoint.

Anybody want to help me out with some cash for my upcoming kitchen remodel? I'll accept cash, check, money order, or PayPal.
