Shipwreck Central

Shipwreck Central 08/27/2004 02:01 PM

Shipwreck Central is a companion site for a team of divers that explore various shipwrecks around the world. They host live chats, teaching aids, and information about shows they've made from diving footage. For the bits of downloadable audio and video, they've chosen a Creative Commons license and their copyright page explains why, even though they are a somewhat commercial endeavor:

We have thought long and hard about copyright issues here at Shipwreck Central. As creators we spend a lot of time, effort and money recording and editing the material you see here, and of course we wish to protect our copyright from unfair and unlicensed commercial use. However we are also aware that there are new cultural and technological dynamics at play which may result in legitimate creative and educational uses of our video that would not be possible under strict copyright laws.

For this reason we have decided to go with a Creative Commons license for the video and audio available in the free areas of Shipwreck Central. Information about the Creative Commons License can be found below.

Greetings from Central Europe!

Greetings from Central Europe! 04/25/2004 09:51 AM

To calibrate, when it's 3:20PM here, it's 9:20AM in Boston, and 6:20AM in California. As predicted, no sleep on the plane. Got into Amsterdam via train from the airport at 8AM local time, waited in the hotel lobby, met some people from the UK, went to breakfast, waited some more in the hotel lobby, they took pity on me and gave me the first available room at 10:30AM, I showered and slept and woke up at 3PM or so, and immediately (of course) had to figure out how to get online.

Which proved to be a puzzle. They had no power on the airplane last night, but I read about it in the online magazine. They said sometimes you have to pull the battery on your laptop to get it work because the laptop-plus-battery consumes too much juice, but the laptop-itself is okay. When I plugged the laptop into the converter, the light on the power-brick would pulse and the machine would start up and then hibernate, over and over. I tried to charge my iPod and it wouldn't charge. So I tried pulling the battery on the laptop and voila, it runs. So I am able to get online (for 17.5 euro a day, what a ripoff) but my battery isn't charging, which is a problem I have to solve. Any suggestions, send them here.

So why do you tune into Radio Dave? I hope it's for insights like this. When you arrive in Europe, as I did today, you realize how strange the place you live is. We don't have wind mills. We don't have great train stations under our airports. We don't have giant ferris wheels in the central square of our nation's capital to celebrate our queen, and we don't have a queen. But I'll tell you one thing we share. TCP/IP and 802.11b. Amidst all the childish squabbling of tech companies and their infantile engineers, and pundits who steer markets toward higher consulting fees (for them), we managed to get some really nice compatibility. My power adapter may not work here, but my XML-RPC stack does.

Rock out on Mixter!

Rock out on Mixter! 03/22/2005 04:43 PM

If you haven't already been there, check out CC Mixter. Mixter is a site for musicians that operates sort of like Friendster, in that it lets you find other musicians based on their musical interests and talents. What's new, though, is you can see how music is related to each other based on who's sampling and mashing-up who. For example, if I've sampled your song, the system will create a link between our two songs.

Currently, all of the tracks on Mixter are licensed under the Sampling Licenses, giving you the right to noncommercially distribute, and sample or mash up, either commercially or noncommercially, based on the license.

We're hoping that Mixter becomes a central place for musicians to find tracks they can LEGALLY sample, without any hassle. We're also hoping Mixter becomes a place where artists can be discovered, using the power of Creative Commons. To get the ball rolling, we'll soon be running a contest where the winners will get a Magnatune contract. You can help by pointing your friends to Mixter, file-sharing or podcasting tracks you like, or whatever else you can think of to get the music out there.

Fortunately, the Fine Art of Sampling contest drew out some GREAT musicians, who have contributed some GREAT tracks. For example this remix by sHORT fACED bEAR of Girl and Supergirl, by Lisa DeBenedictis. Or, Living Stereo (2005) by Teru which samples The Critic - Coffee House Rendezvous(II), sacred sand, and Living Stereo (1958). Or, check out One Two Three by Sharp, which both samples a bunch of songs, and is sampled by a few (I won't bother to make any more hyperlinks here - that's what's Mixter is for - it does it for you!).

For a quick tour, you can stream the editoral picks, or if you're looking for something specific, check out some of the tags. There's also an RSS feed.

Finally, Apple designs software that looks just as nice on Windows as it does on OS X. I finally installed QuickTime on my primary system, after seeing that they squished the horrid ClearType rendering issue that plauged previous 6.x versions. iTunes? iLike a lot. Is it gonna make me return my 60GB Nomad Zen? Nope; I like stuff that supports WMA. Plus, with the ER-6 Isolator Earphones, just about any portable jukebox sounds great. Is it gonna make me wanna sign up for Apple's music service? Nope; I've got hundreds of CDs sitting on my bookshelf, ready to rip. Is this release gonna make me any less pissy about the recent changes over at EMusic? Nope. Sorry, had to throw that in there. Unfortunately, there's no "end all, be all" digital entertainment service out there. Dammit!...
