Incredible Beatles mashup mixes 40+
different tracks
12/29/2004 11:27 AM

Cory Doctorow: Hank sez, "Where ordinary mash-up mixes mix two or perhaps three songs, this mix is made up by appx 40 Beatles songs, with sometimes five different songs playing at the same time. A must hear!" I concur; this is mind-blowingly amazing. Man, all these Beatles mash-ups this year are really making me yearn for my old Beatles vinyl. I especially love the juxtaposition in this track of the old skiffle-Beatles with the later psychedelia. Soo-poib. 5MB MP3 Link (Thanks, Hank!)

PS: I am reasonably certain that this server will be shortly overwhelmed. If you've got a mirror, email me and I'll post a link to it. However, I have no such mirror, so if you find yourself unable to get a copy, don't look at me!

Update 1: Ian Clarke, the co-author of the awesome P2P tool Freenet, has graciously offered to distribute this file through Dijjer, his new (still pre-beta) P2P content distribution tool; here's the Dijjer Link

Update 2: Brian Arnold offers this more conventional mirror

Update 3: David Chin was good enough to make and seed this Torrent for the file (though I have my doubts about BitTorrent's efficacy with a file of a paltry five megabytes)

The Incredible, Shrinking CPUs

The Incredible, Shrinking CPUs 10/30/2003 11:57 PM
It seems CPUs are continuing to get smaller and faster. Two new processors have been making news lately: the Transmeta Efficeon and the VIA Technologies NanoBGA Eden-N processor. The Transmeta Efficeon TM8000 will run at up to 2GHz and is just 21mm x 21mm. The new VIA CPU is about the size of a penny and consumes only 7 watts when running at 1Ghz, so it may be usable without a fan. VIA has also announced a new motherboard form factor even smaller than the Mini-ITX. They're calling it Nano-ITX and it's just 6.7cm x 6.7cm. In related news, the Hypertone E1-32 CPU, a RISC/DSP combo is now supported by uCLinux and uClibc thanks to a porting effort by the manufacturer. Let's hope this all leads to smarter robots.

Incredible New Ebay Phishing Mail

Incredible New Ebay Phishing Mail 06/24/2005 04:01 PM

ebay_small.gifThis is a bit off topic, but it's a fascinating study of what happens when Phishers get a book on Javascript.

First off, I don't specifically understand what's going on here. Ping me if you'd like to get the link and do some forensics. Essentially, you go to the typical locked-down Apache site with lots of fake Paypal material. It asks you to click another link and then you get some sort of strange mini-browser that causes your main browser to auto-supply your email and password. I stopped the script before it could do any harm, but clearly they are piggy-backing on a real site here.

The header of the mini-browser appears above. Click it to see the full screen. I wouldn't normally post these but this one was so unique and I haven't had my coffee yet. I got so freaked that I went and changed my Paypal password. I changed it to 1234.

UPDATE - Slashdot picked up the trail as did Bachelor Ben. Thanks, faceless horde!

David Pescovitz: 134Seminal UK avant-folk group the Incredible String Band is preparing to tour the US for the first time in three decades. The group melds sitars, guitars, banjos, and ouds with bluegrass, Celtic melodies, and classic 1960s psychedelia. Founding members Mike Heron are leading the band stateside. From publicist Howard Wuelfing's email list:
Many of the artists that comprise the current wave of “experimental folk” consider the Incredible String Band as a crucial inspiration and influence.  Devendra Banhart says (in typically Banhartian fashion) “Happy Birthday! not noodlemisters but Epic lizard man songs traversing the new universe holding sarods, our old hopes tightly, fiddles, chimes, udes, bagpipes, baby boars, banjos, mead, invisible ropes and on and on OH in this sweetcheese pond lies a perfect reflection of trueTRUE love! Happy Birthday Old Baby!"

btfusion.jpgLand-line phones are a thing of the past. With the advantages of cell phones people are ditching cheap land-lines for a little more expensive convenience. A happy medium may have been found. A British company BT is launching a service called BT Fusion. A cell phone connects wirelessly to a hub in the home, when ready to leave just take the phone with you for standard cell phone usage. It is predicted to be 95% cheaper while being used at home. Right now it is being tested among 400 U.K. participants with a full release due out in September.

Crazy Japanese DJ Disney mixes

Crazy Japanese DJ Disney mixes 01/07/2004 06:12 PM
I'm grooving hard on my latest Xmas gift, a CD my mom sent me from Tokyo called Readymade Digs Disney. The liner-notes are all in Japanese, but the songs basically consist of high-energy pop and smooth/silly jazz remixes/covers of traditional Disney songs (like the theme from Small World and the Mickey Mouse March, in Japanese and English) produced by Yasuharu Konishi of Pizzicato 5. I can't put it down. Link

Update: here are some downloadable samples from the disc. (Thanks, How!)

Mashup: Movable Type and WordML

Mashup: Movable Type and WordML 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

Word docs from Movable Type: I have to say that Microsoft is doing some great things with the new underlying XML format in Office 2003 and up. Using that functionality, the guys at Movable Type's Pronet published a simple template that outputs Word ML, and thus creates what's essentially a Word document directly from Movable Type.

Bloggers who are used to updating their status by posting to their Movable Type blogs can use a template like this to easily reformat their posts into a weekly report in Word that can be emailed around or simply posted to a web server for easy access.

I plugged the template in, and generated this Word document (60KB PDF; opens in a new window — it's actually a PDF generated from Word 2003, since you have to have at least that version to view it). I would have had to screw a bit with the template tags to get it to come out exactly like the Web version (we use a special plugin for line breaks, for instance), but even at the defaults, there you have a Word document of the last five posts to this blog.

The implications of WordML in general are fantastic. In the business I support, we were always trying to come up with a modular way to create large documents — piecing them together from smaller documents. After trying a million different things in Word, we finally defaulted to two dozen Word files and just doing "Insert > File" until we had amassed the file we wanted.

With Word ML, we could maintain the pieces in in an actual content management system (this is screaming out for eZ publish), then output them in whatever order we needed, to be opened and printed from Word. I can't wait to start playing with this.

(Also, wouldn't this obviate the need for a PDF rendering library, assuming you were using a Windows server? If you need a PDF version of content, output what you need in WordML, then instantiate Word and print to PDF via VBA. And how long before someone just comes up with a WordML-to-PDF executable that lets you skip instantiating Word altogether? Extra points if they make it for *nix...)

It is not often that a company boss gets to bathe in the success of a product that is a smash hit with consumers. It is rarer still for that product to be genuinely important, transforming not just the company that designed it, but the face of an industry. It is even more remarkable for one chief executive to enjoy this level of success, not at one company, but at two quite different businesses in the same year. And to accomplish all this while undergoing treatment for cancer -- well, that's just incredible. By Paul Durman, The Times

French DJ/producer duo Loo & Placido tell BoingBoing:
We've been doing bootlegs / mash-ups for a few years now. For the last several months, we've been working with MTV on exclusive bootlegs for a new show called ""MTV MASH" which is broadcast all around Europe 3 times a week. We already made12 tracks for the show so far. If you want to listen to our bootlegs, check out our website, it's still under construction, but there's already a lot of tracks to listen to.
Link to the L&P site. The MTV out-takes you can listen to here are terrific, and if this is what ended up on the cutting room floor -- the show should be amazing. I'm particularly fond of the Missy Elliot meets Green day track "get your green on," as well as the Goldbug meets ODB number "Golden Bastard."
