Loads of Linux Links
http://loll. sourceforge.net/linux/links/index.html

The purpose of the Loads of Linux Links project is to collect, organise, classify and maintain important URLs about Linux and the Open Source movement for all levels of Linux users. The LoLL project now has 4000+ links which are updated regularly. This project originally began as a service for the Victoria Linux Users' Group (VLUG) but in the true spirit of Linux, they decided to share this valuable resource with the wider Linux community by putting the Loads of Linux Links project on SourceForge. Like Linux, this is a work in progress, so stay tuned here for further update announcements concerning additional links and revised subject categories. Also, like Linux, no one owns this project -- it's GPLed so the project can never be hijacked by proprietary interests!

Site Review: Loads of Linux Links 12/22/2004 01:44 AM
Imagine a Web site that has over 4,000 links to sites of interest to Linux enthusiasts. Forget about dead links, because this site would be vigilantly maintained by a small group of people totally committed to the work of providing useful content. Instead, expect fresh links several times a week with handy accessories like quick links to related pages.

If you have a PC that runs an older version of Windows, you don't have the built-in slide-show software available to XP users. But there could well be another sophisticated slide-show program on your computer: PowerPoint. While Powerpoint is commonly thought of as a business tool used to display mundane graphics like sales charts, it works quite well for showing off photos. And millions of people already own the software because it was bundled into their versions of Microsoft Office.

to eliminate net-lag
03/31/2005 12:42 PM
Cory Doctorow: Google has added "pre-fetching" for the top result on your searches. This means that when you google for something, the top link is automatically loaded in the background in your browser (this only works for Firefox/Mozilla) so that if you click it, it appears immediately, with no network lag. Link (via /.)

Update: Kwai Chang Caine sez, "the prefetched site gets to set all it's cookies without you knowing (unless your browser is configured to tell you about cookies). Presumably this includes any third party inclusions in the target page."

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?

Hot Links

Hot Links 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

The thing I love about RSS, and by extension web services, is that they allow people to take publically available data and combine it in ways never thought of by the originator of the feed. The internet is awash with examples of this, from useful services such as Feedster to useless amusements like I despise you and your so-called taste, the most insulting extension of the Amazon API I've seen to date.

Hot Links is the neatest new serice of this kind I've seen in quite a while, spotted a few weeks ago thanks to a vanity PubSub subscription. Hot Links subscribes to a bunch of RSS feeds for link logs (or blogmarks or whatever you want to call them) and watches them for newly linked sites. When it spots one, it grabs a thumbnail sized screenshot using khtml2png and posts it along with the description cribbed from the link log. Sites linked to from more than one link roll are promoted, allowing Hot Links visitors to restrict their "level" and view only sites with a certain minimum number of citations.

Syndicating link logs like this is a smart idea, and the people behind Hot Links have pulled it off in a stylish manner with great attention to detail. I particularly like the ability to view links from just my blogmarks as it provides a neat visual reminder of the sites I've recently recorded.

One of your links...

One of your links... 01/04/2004 02:42 AM
I was showing a co-worker the war chalking symbols and tried to access one of the pictures, the jpg one, and it took me to this site: http://main.netster.com/Index.asp?Site=c2NyZWFtY2QuY29t NOT the one that is referenced. Also, upon closing that browser, I was prompted for two things, one "Do you want to make nester.com your homepage?" The other, do I want to install and run (some) program? Spyware, I'm sure.) To which I couldn't respond NO fast enough. I just thought you'd like to know that your links might be more than people are bargaining for. Don't know what your thoughts are on it, but I wouldn't want to subject my vistors to those things, no matter the cost. Thanks for listening.
