Apple is the easy-to-use, less complex platform. Thus it should be cheaper, not more expensive. It's that simple. By John C. Dvorak, PC Magazine

The Mac platform is essentially stagnant. That becomes obvious when you look at the declining market share numbers—not from research firms, but from the W3C, which monitors online activity. As of December 2004, the Mac share as measured by online activity is 2.7 percent (Linux is 3.1), with all the rest going to various flavors of Windows. I'm now convinced that this stems mostly from Apple's inability to make the Mac a commodity computer by pricing it to compete with PCs made inexpensively in China and selling with razor-thin margins. Here are the reasons Apple can't sustain its position.

UK market share growth 11/06/2003 09:59 AM
Following Apple's recent marketing push in Europe, IDC has confirmed that Apple has experienced a growth in market share in the UK. Macworld UK reports that Apple's UK market share has increased 36 percent year-on-year this quarter, with overall market share expanding to 2.5 percent, ranking Apple eleventh in unit shipments. The overall UK market grew 17.4 percent. Though education sales, the new Power Mac G5 and new PowerBooks have contributed to the growth, no one market segment has...

RSS reader market share

RSS reader market share 01/03/2005 10:01 PM

I've seen a number of posts lately in which the market share of RSS readers is determined by the number of hits the author sees from each RSS reader in his or her server logs, and while FeedDemon is always ranked near the top, I can't help but point out how flawed this method is. For starters, FeedDemon defaults to updating feeds - that is, checking for new items - every three hours, whereas many RSS readers default to updating every single hour. And unlike a number of RSS readers, FeedDemon honors the feed's <ttl>, so that the feed's author can specify how often it's updated. A large number of feeds (including some of my own) specify a <ttl> of 1440 minutes, so that the feed is updated once a day rather than once an hour.

Perhaps more importantly, FeedDemon only automatically updates feeds in the current c hannel group. This approach has caused some controversy with a handful of customers, but I stand by this design. Before creating FeedDemon I studied existing RSS readers, and it struck me how bandwidth-unfriendly many of them were. In my opinion, having a huge treeview of feeds that are constantly updating is wasteful - not only does it unnecessarily consume bandwidth, but it also slows down the application. It makes far more sense to me to regularly update only the feeds you regularly read.

In other words, a well-behaved RSS reader like FeedDemon is designed not to hit your server very frequently - so basing RSS reader market share on your server logs is wildly inaccurate.

The sound of market share

The sound of market share 03/06/2004 01:56 AM

When I was traveling in Europe this trip, I heard the default ringtone of the Nokia 6600 everywhere I went and it was confusing because I always thought it was my phone. I mentioned this to someone and they said, "that's the sound of market share." ;-)

PS Does anyone know where / how to get a mp3 of the Nokia 6600 default ring tone?

Panther and market share

Panther and market share 10/29/2003 03:28 AM
Could Panther be the operating system which finally convinces the Apple-curious to switch? An article on eWeek explores the possibility. Because the new Mac operating system coexists so peacefully with Windows machines on a network, handles email and web duties with ease and features standard productivity software like Microsoft Office, there is often no technical reason users and corporations couldn't switch. Add to the equation that OS X has so far remained unaffected by the security...

AMD's Processor Share Climbs (ExtremeTech)

Advanced Micro Devices climbed to its best quarter in the past two years in terms of processor sales, an analyst said Monday.

Analyst firm Mercury Research found that AMD's unit share of the microprocessor market reached 16.6 percent, its highest in eight quarters. Intel, meanwhile, saw its share drop from 83.7 percent a year ago to 82.2 percent in the most recent quarter.

Intel fared well in laptops, McCarron said, while AMD's strength lay in value desktops, where its Sempron processor began taking hold. Both AMD and Intel had strong server activity, McCarron said.

RealNetworks Has Had Enough Increase In

RealNetworks Has Had Enough Increase In
Market Share
09/09/2004 11:16 AM
It's been less than a month since Real Networks cut their downloadable music prices to $0.49 and they've already killed the program after declaring it a success. They claim that they doubled their share of the downloadable music market from 10% to 20% -- but it's unclear how they could possibly know what the overall market is, or what their percentage is at this point (for what it's worth, Apple denies any noticeable decline). Real will continue to offer some tracks at the $0.49 price as an ongoing promotion. Still, as has been noted before, Apple is mostly selling music at a loss to sell more iPods. Microsoft is selling music to get people hooked on Windows Media Player. What's Real's excuse? If it takes them cutting their price to well below cost (estimates are that they pay anywhere between $0.60 and $0.70 to the recording industry per song), that can't be a good sign for the business prospects of just selling songs.
