Airways Safe for Talking
Airways Safe for Talking
07/17/2004 07:49 PMQualcomm lofts media, officials to show that plane stays in air while
cell phones used: Qualcomm would certainly enjoy having more people
using more advanced phones more of the time, and their
proof-of-concept with a commercial American Airlines aircraft--but
obviously not a commercial flight--out of Dallas/Ft. Worth on Thursday
was intended to gather data and allay fears. The fear of cell phones
used in the air is certainly a bogeyman: there are a few known,
unexplained instances of a cell phone in use that may have affected
some airplane equipment, but there's no widely known, widely
reproduced instances of cell phones affecting systems. The FCC and FAA
are following a better safe than sorry approach. Qualcomm was testing
a picocell that was onboard the aircraft. This is the third of these
kinds of tests from different firms that I'm aware of from just the
last few weeks. The friendly skies will be even more full of chatter
soon. While the picocell was 3G, according to the press release, only
voice and text messages were used over the system--no pure data. An
American Airlines EVP is quoted in the article saying that in-air cell
use is about two years away, which conforms with what's being said
elsewhere. Industrial-grade earplugs or stereo earpieces--which can be
custom-molded for your canals--will probably be a good growth industry
for the flying market. Expect to see in-flight magazines half full of
advertisements on reducing irritation of adjacent loud talkers....

Treat British Airways as damage and

08/29/2004 12:41 PM
Cory Doctorow:
I was trying to buy a one-way ticket from Brussels to London in
September, and I ran into the weirdest, dumbest thing: British Airways
won't sell you a ticket over the Web if your credit-card isn't billed
in the same country the flight originates in (Er, hello? You're an
airline -- that means you deal with people who are
traveling, sometimes to countries other than the one that
they reside in).
So I called BA and was told that the same ticket would cost 400
percent more if bought over the phone. So I went to a BA counter in
Boston and was quoted a fare that was 200 percent more than the
Web-fare.
I tried booking through Expedia, but they wanted to mail me a paper
ticket. Since I rarely touch down in any city for more than a couple
days, intersecting with a postal-delivery system for time-sensitive
materials is pretty tricky.
Then I gave up on the Web and went to SN Brussels Air, a little
carrier whose website has never ever worked for me. I called the
London reservations desk and booked a ticket for exactly what BA
charges via its website.
That's no surprise: as it turns out, the flight is operated by British
Airways. It's the same goddamned plane.
So that's the point of this post: if ever you want to book a ticket on
BA from Brussels to London, book it through SN Brussels Air (by phone
-- the website will probably remain busted for all eternity), and you
can circumvent BA's dumbass ecommerce policies and extorionate
phone/counter prices.
