New Google News Interface 09/19/2002 03:52 PM

Thanks to Adrian Holovaty for letting us know about the new look for Google News. I can't see it and Adrian says that it only comes up in Mozilla 1.1, but from the screenshot it looks very cool. There are also some comments on Adrian's weblog....

Customize Google News... Why? 03/14/2005 04:58 PM
Maybe I'm seriously missing something and you can help me out here. I've been known to drink the Google kool aid now and then, but their stuff is so... uneven. I know, I know. It's beta. And it has been for years. The "big news" is that you can now customize Google News and that's interesting I guess. But I use a few browsers and several computers. Inside Google News

Inside Google News 06/05/2005 11:34 PM

I just heard an excellent presentation by Krishna Bharat of Google News. He explained how Google News works. It basically crawls news sites, finds "story clusters", ranks the sources, figures out how prominently each source is running the story, figures out whether its a big story or a little story, figures out geographic references, and builds the pages for the various geographic and language editions. He was talking to an audience of editors so there were many questions about how the "editing" process worked and many people couldn't seem to believe it was algorithmic. Some people seemed afraid that Google News would replace them. The point that he made and was clear from the process that he explained is that it uses the decisions that the editors of the various media make about what story to run and where in deciding how important a story was. It was basically aggregating the decisions of the editors, not replacing them. Without the editors and the "fr ont page process" Google News couldn't decide what story to lead with. At least in its current form.

The derivative conclusion you can come to is that Google News is just amplifying or reinforcing systemic biases in MSM editorial and NOT helping to address these issues. I think this make Google News very news media friendly and also provides an opportunity for bloggers and projects like Global Voices to still have a very important role. I guess that if Google New started incorporating more of the alternative press, they could shift the bias.

During the discussion, Dan Gillmor pressed Krishna for more transparency on the algorithm and the list of sources and I seconded the motion.

Some good notes of the sessions on the editors blog.

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, a couple weeks ago I got a copy of To The 5 Boroughs, the new Beastie Boys album. It's not much of a growth for them, sounding a lot like their previous record Hello Nasty. Most of the songs are somewhat forgettable, but MCA gets props for the following rhyme in It Takes Time to Build:

We got a president we didn't elect,
The Kyoto Treaty he decided to neglect...

I never thought environmental treaties would make it into mainstream hip-hop songs, but the Beasties proved me wrong.

Caveat Lector: Beastie Boys Evil

"It seems that Capitol Records has some sort of new copy protection system, that automatically, silently, installs 'helpful' copy protection software on MacOS and Windows as soon as you insert the CD into default systems. I’m not sure exactly what it does yet, but I am sure regreting actually purchasing said media now… they don’t deserve my money if they choose to pull stupid stunts like this. Installing software without your permission sounds like viral malware behaviour to me. I certainly hope the AV companies put signatures into their products for this crap." [Security Focus, via Furdlog]

Noted for when patrons complain that the CD they checked out from your library messed up their computer. Yeah, this is definitely the way for the music industry to win back already angry customers.

What? You thought I was selling my older hardware for the fun of it? Things I love about Kwyjibo, my new Sony Clie UX50: size, shape, weight, screen, features, functionality, convenience, power cradle. Things I don't love about Kwyjibo: (1) it relies on the Sony Memory Suck; (2) No keyboard navigation; (3) unmanageable USB port cover; (4) no way to flip between portrait / landscape mode; (5) deep reliance on ass-nasty QuickTime codecs; and (6) poor out-of-the-box Outlook integration. Even with these grievances aired, I must admit that I've been quite pleased with "it" so far. Then again, who's ever completely happy with their PDA?...

Even better, the develops are planning on developing a swarm of 'slave robots' that would provide an all-around sensor and scouting networking, giving the ROBART III time to track and target intruders with its six-barrel pneumatically-powered gatling gun that fires tranquilizer darts or rubber bullets. Further research will add a beach-level scoop that will kick sand in the face of QRIOs.
