Patrick sez, "Digging through his cassette tapes last weekend, this guy came across 'Macintosh Plus: A Guided Tour' and decided he should archive it onto CD for posterity (being a pack rat by nature). It's especially interesting in that it gives a good glimpse of the level of user education necessary at that point in Computer History: it patiently goes over how to interact with icons, how to use the mouse, etc..."

Open source audio

Open source audio 12/27/2004 01:20 PM
I've always wondered what it would be like to use audio to tell a story. Today's podcast is my first real attempt at doing that. The title is Open Source Audio and the story is one that I've been trying to tell a number of folks -- and in particular, my non-geek friends -- for a while now. The story begins with a snippet from a 1924 recording of Lonesome Road Blues from the Internet Archive's open source audio collection. After brief discussions of the Edison site at the National Park Service, and the Creative Commons public domain license under which many of these early recordings have been released to the Internet Archive, we hear Brewster Kahle talking about his vision of universal storage and access. I recorded his remarks during a talk he gave at the O'Reilly open source conference in Portland last summer. ...

Neodynium costs US$159 (and is available for $139 for a limited time). It works with Digidesign Pro Tools, Emagic Logic and other software. System requirements call for a G3 or faster with Mac OS X v10.2 or newer and a compatible host application.

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...
