Xeni Jardin:
Author and wireless geek Mike Outmesguine announces a disaster relief
project aimed at bringing connectivity to tsunami victims cut off from
communications services by the disaster.
I am working to organize a disaster relief effort to help those
affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami. I'd like to send wireless
equipment and expertise to damaged areas to help reconnect the people.
I'm still working out the details and will update you as more
develops. It will be organized with folks from the Southern California
Wireless Users Group, SOCALWUG and other wireless groups that wish to
participate. I started calling it the Post-Tsunami Reconnect.
Xeni Jardin mentioned the effort today on Fox News Channel during an
interview about bloggers and the tsunami. I will have a video excerpt
available soon. Here is a statement I sent to the Center for
International Disaster Information about the effort:
"We are a Southern California based user community of experts and
advocates of wireless data communications. Wireless community members
supplied technical expertise and wireless equipment for the Florida
hurricane relief efforts and to military personnel stationed in Iraq.
We would like to organize, collect, and deliver wireless data
equipment to disaster relief workers and others in the affected region
to help maintain a high level of communication and internet access
ability. We would also be able to send engineers into the area to help
bring connections online."
For more information or to discuss a donation of funds, equipment,
or your expertise, contact Mike Outmesguine by email "mo at

Wireless Laptops Popular at Taylor!
05/20/2004 05:22 PMSteve Oberg, Electronic Resources Librarian & Assistant
Professor at Taylor University,
posted the following statistics to the WEB4LIB mailing list
today.
"Taylor University's Zondervan Library serves a mostly
undergraduate student population of about 1,700. We have four
wireless-enabled laptops available for checkout for general purpose
uses including web browsing and library research. Our spring term is
ending and out of curiosity I decided to tally up the circulation
stats for them. It seemed by my observation that they were quite
heavily used, in spite of the fact that we also have a large computer
lab and several thin client workstations, but I wanted to know
specifics.
I found out that for the spring term (about 90 days in length),
three out of the four laptops averaged close to 170 checkouts each.
The fourth laptop was out of commission for most of the time. The
total number of circulations for all of them was just under 500. I'm a
mathematical ignoramus but I think that averages out to about 5 1/2
circulations per day."
Lesson for all types of libraries: those kids are going to get out
into the real world (public libraries) and the work force (special
libraries) and their kids (school libraries) are going to expect
wireless access. And that's not even counting today's adults that are
already sitting at Panera every morning, surfing while sipping.
And they're all getting used to access information anywhere on
portable devices.
They are coming... to your library....

Blow Back: The Cost
And Consequences of American EmpireI heard Johnson
interviewed on Episode II,
War And Conflict In The Post-Cold War,
Post-9/11 Era of
The Whole Wide World
The Cold War and its central conflict - the physical and
ideological battles between the United States, the Soviet Union and
their proxy states - imposed a certain logic and consistency on the
world. Take that away and add the bloody wars in the Balkans, Africa
and the Middle East in the ‘90s as well as the terror attacks and
warnings of more recent times and you get a very confused picture of a
world at war. Is this breaking storm in Iraq about oil, democracy,
freedom, empire, culture, water, diamonds, modernizing Islam or nation
building in the Middle East? Some, one or all of these
things? It was an excellent program and well worth your
listen, either by RA now or mp3 later.

More about Spotlight
More about Spotlight
07/12/2004 07:13 PMIn reading John Gruber’s Spotli
ght on Spotlight today, I was struck by something interesting:
One implication of Spotlight’s file-centricity is
that its ability to search “email” might not apply to
clients other than Apple Mail — it’s the fact that the new
Tiger version of Mail stores each message as a separate file that
allows Spotlight to effectively return individual mail messages as
search results. No other major mail client uses a one-message-per-file
storage format.
I haven’t looked into Spotlight in any depth (and, if I had, I
couldn’t talk about it). But, if it’s true that Spotlight
only looks at files, then this creates an interesting dilemma for all
the developers whose apps don’t use individual files.
NetNewsWire, for instance, does not use a separate file for each
individual news item. And NetNewsWire isn’t alone, of
course—in fact, I think there’s a trend toward more and
more apps like this, apps that store chunks smaller than most web
pages and files. (What Anil Dash calls a
Microcontent Client.)

And now for some trivia...
Little-known fact—years ago, back in 1996 (I think), Ranchero
Software had a product named Spotlight. It was a search engine for
websites: it used Frontier (which was freeware then) and Filemaker Pro
and ran behind WebSTAR and similar HTTP servers.
Spotlight cost $99, and it didn’t have the success that, say,
NetNewsWire has—but we did get an “It Shipped!”
plaque from Apple, signed by Heidi Roizen. (I think. My memory may not
be completely accurate on some details.)
Which is to say nothing in particular, except that the name Spotlight
is pretty good for search technology. (And I highly doubt that we were
the first ones to use it.)

At the time our company may still have been known as World Wide Power
& Light. (Another piece of trivia.) We stopped using that name because
it was way too long and because someone else was using it too. (Oops.)
(We had a weird domain name: wrldpwr.com. One of those domain names
that takes a half-hour to explain out loud.)
Here’s an old logo we never used:

<div class="infobox">Where was the best place you have
ever been on vacation?</div>
The Galapagos islands, although I'm not sure I would call it a
vacation, cause every day was such a huge learning experience. No one
could have taught me that in a classroom.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite
food?</div>
My favourite food is sushi. I like my sushi like I like my women,
naked on a bed of rice, minus the rice.
<div class="infobox">Do you have any pets?</div>
I have a wild cat that goes by the name Kittay, there are some
pictures of her in my gallery. I also have some fish but they come and
go, so no need mentioning them.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite kind of
fish?</div>
To eat or to appreciate?
<div class="infobox">Appreciate!</div>
That would have to be the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, hands down.
<div class="infobox">What is the one urge you often
get but never act on?</div>
I guess since this interview is PG, it would be breaking stuff. I
used to have a terrible temper as a kid, and my parents would send me
to my room. I would get so upset that I would start smashing my own
things, which would just make me more upset. I am glad I fight the
urges to smash stuff now since I now work at a glass desk, that could
be a expensive temper tantrum.
<div class="infobox">What brought you to
Spymac?</div>
Macworld NY did in 2002, as well as the iWalk. I think I was in the
market for a new laptop, and I wanted to find out if I should buy then
or wait for an update, so through my research I stumbled upon Spymac.
I used to go to other rumor sites, but never did they have a forums
where I could nag people about when I should by my new PowerBook.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite Spymac
forum?</div>
The mod board, with the stripper pole and the... oh, you mean a public
one? I used to like the RLD a lot, but you can only read about the
same thing so many times, and I also found out way too much about
other members - you just dont need to know how many anatomically
correct chunks of rubber some people have. So I guess my favorite
forum is the <a
href="http://www.spymac.com/forums/threadlist.php?catid=9"
target="_blank">Lounge</a>, since it's laid back
and just general discussion.
<div class="infobox">How do you like working at night
time for Spymac?</div>
I am being paid for being on Spymac, how do you think I like it?
<div class="infobox">Have you made many friends
through Spymac?</div>
I have made several friends from Spymac. It has such a strong
community base that I dont know how anyone on here couldn't make a ton
of friends.
<div class="infobox">Why didn't you join the rest of
the Spymac team in Boston for Macworld?</div>
Many reasons. Most importantly it was my girlfriend's birthday that
weekend, and someone had to hold down the tech support fort.
<div class="infobox">Which three Spymac members would
you want to meet?</div>
Meeting anyone would mean revealing my true self, and since the world
isn't ready for me yet, I'll stay in hiding.
<div class="infobox">If you had to be stuck on an
island with three Spymac members, who would you choose?</div>
I guess I would be stuck on there with AtariST, and a bottle of
scotch. With Atari, I know we wouldn't be lost on that island for
long, we'd be picked up pretty quick, and the scotch would make the
awkwardness of just the two of us seem non-existent. What happens on
barren secluded islands, stays on barren secluded islands.
<div class="infobox">What kind of music are you into?
Who is your favourite musician?</div>
I am a huge fan of music, I like all genres, but if I had to pick a
single one to top the list it would be hip hop. It is the biggest
cultural movement since Rock and Roll in the late 50's early 60's. On
top of it all stands Kanye West. It's about time we have someone with
something to say other than they're gonna kill someone else.
<div class="infobox">Would you ever pose nude for a
magazine such as Playgirl or else for a large sum of
money?</div>
The adult industry already has a hedgehog, and well lets just say I'm
not sure I could compete with his, um, "gifted" genetics.
Although if I did, I think my back drop would be a funeral. You don't
see enough naked people at funerals. I think it would really lighten
things up a bit. In fact, that's a great idea, my funeral's dress code
is gonna be birthday suits. That will take some of the attention off
the dead guy in the box.
<div class="infobox">When you first joined Spymac you
had a reputation for causing a bit of trouble and you were sometimes a
bit of a jerk. You later became a Forum Moderator and now you're
working for Spymac. What caused this change in attitude with you on
the site?</div>
Hey now, are you saying I'm no longer a jerk? Well, when I first came
to Spymac I figured I would stir up the pot a bit. I remember I used
to rouse GadgetDon real good in the shouts about religion, and now I'm
working with him. I guess the reason that I turned the leaf, so to
say, was cause I was just too damn good at skirting the line and
figured that if I could be so damn good at being bad then I might as
well give the friendly thing a whirl. It's a lot better, cause now the
shock factor is back when I want it, and now they pay me for being a
jerk if I need to be. Hell, how can I complain with that?
<div class="infobox">Your avatars are great! You
should get some additional ones. Where did you get them?</div>
<a href="http://www.spymac.com/member.php?memberid=2794"
target="_blank">TimTheEnchanter </a> was kind
enough to make them for me on his own time, he is a tremendous artist
and was kind enough to do so, if you would like to see more contact
him cause I know I sure do.
<div class="infobox">If you could live at any time,
past or present, what would you choose?</div>
I think I would pick present day - I like things how they are.
<div class="infobox">If your home was on fire, what
would you grab on the way out?</div>
If my home was on fire I would probably only grab my cat and my tower.
Nothing pisses me off more than loosing my bookmarks and if I lost my
MP3s I would have no reason to live.
<div class="infobox">If you could be someone else for
a day, who would it be and why?</div>
I think I would be some real trashy female celebrity; maybe Paris
Hilton or Britney. I'd run around all day doing all the things I have
always said I would do if I were a girl, which would probably land me
in the slammer. That would be OK since there are plenty of nasty
things I could do in there still. Always wondered how easy it would
be to be a girl and "get" your way out of jail.
<div class="infobox">If someone gave you a few million
dollars, how would you spend it?</div>
On the market and make a few more.
<div class="infobox">If you could see anyone in
concert (time-travel is permitted), who would it be?</div>
Wow, now thats a humdinger of a question. I would have to say Yo-Yo
Ma, that would be one hell of a concert. Haha, all jokes aside,
probably everyone at Woodstock in '69, especially Jimi Hendrix's
rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Mel Gibson, the Jews, Haiti, and blaming
it all on people who died 175 years ago
03/08/2004 11:03 PMPeople are blaming all of the Jew-hatred in Mel
Gibson's new movie on the visions of a German nun, Sister
Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824). According to this article from Newsday:
The bedridden visionary, who is said to have borne the stigmata and
the wounds of the crown of thorns, is a particular source of
contention for Gibson because of her depictions of Jews as
bloodthirsty and venal. In The Dolorous Passion, for instance,
she "sees" Jewish priests passing out bribes to get people to offer
false testimony against Jesus and even tipping the Roman executioners.
She also describes seeing Jesus' cross being built in the courtyard of
the Temple in Jerusalem.
And Emmerich's 19th-century
biographer, the Rev. C.E. Schmoe'ger, wrote about how she had one
vision of an "old Jewess Meyr," who confessed to her "that Jews in our
country and elsewhere strangled Christian children and used their
blood for all sorts of suspicious and diabolical
practices."
Gibson, who carries a relic of Emmerich in the form
of a faded piece of cloth from her habit, vehemently rejects
characterizations of the nun as anti-Semitic.
In other news... I was listening to NPR news a couple of
days ago. All of Haiti's current troubles were being blamed on
things that the French did in 1825 and this proposition was discussed
seriously for 15 minutes. Haiti does seem to be in rather tough
shape, at least going by the
CIA Factbook page:
"About 80% of the population lives in abject poverty.
... The economy shrank an estimated 1.2% in 2001 and an estimated 0.9%
in 2002. Literacy rate is 53%."
Despite an HIV infection rate of 6.1% and a lot of deaths
from AIDS the population is still growing at an annual rate of
1.67%, i.e., there are an ever-increasing number of Haitians to share
an ever-smaller pie. (cf. Malthus)
Perhaps there are more problems in our world of 2004 that
can be blamed on those French and Germans who died circa 1825...
Anyone care to suggest some dead Europeans to blame in the comments
section?

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal
service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with
Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this
one. Yes, we are all Bryght
guys :-) !
We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to
give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required,
no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at
Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know
of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght
site, please contact us.
Whither StreamLine you might ask?
StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we
still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging
platform.

My father died

Some people come out
over the web, others have been married or given birth.
For me - I'm going to deal with the
death of my father.
He died while I was in Europe and I choice to deal with his death
until now - as I was in the middle of a micro-content roadshow - my self-titled quest to create
new kinds of standards - surrounding people, reviews, media, events
and listings.
I decided that he would have wanted it this way.
I needed to give myself some time to get over the intitial shock
that my father was dead and that I wasn't by his bedside when he
passed. I had just seen him a few days earlier - as I came through
Chicago on my way up to Michigan to be with Lisa, Mimi and Lucy (they
were staying at her mother's house in Grand Haven, Michigan - right on
a bluff overlooking the lake.)
I could have gone back. I could have blown off the roadshow and
stayed by his bedside. But what's the point? Would it have made his
passing any easier? Maybe.
Would it have helped me deal with his dying. Probably have made it
worse.
Would it have helepd the family deal with
Was I afraid to sit there and watch him die? Hell yes!
So we headed to NYC for dinner #1 - and a party after at my friend
Kenny Shaffer's. Kenny's TV2Me brings U.S. television
signals to Monte Carlo and Moscow for rich gamblers who can afford
cable TV accounts in NYC. He'd like to be able to do this
legally.
I got to meet Scott Mathews
and see A
my Harmon pregnant with Sasha.
I got to meet some video
bloggers getting ready to
deal with the RNC. And we stayed at Marc Barrot's apartment -
the main guy behind WebOutliner.

This Thursday's Frontline on PBS is covering the modern music industry
in an episode titled "The Way
the Music Died". It follows the industry rise after Woodstock in
1969, through music genre changes, and eventually how Napster and the
Internet changed everything. It sounds interesting for musicians and
music fans alike.

02/11/2004 09:36 PM Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people
represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they
want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to
account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to
friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions.
Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social
interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied
this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they
send email to (TO and CC) and how...

Business 2.0's blog reports that Atkins was skinny and healthy just
before he died, no matter what the scandal-rags (which have been
reporting that he was 60lbs overweight with heart disease at the time
of his accidental death) say.

09/03/2004 12:19 PMBoy, Gov. George Pataki and President Bush sure talked a lot about
9/11 Thursday night. I mean,
a lot. A disturbing lot. At some
point, for me -- and I think it was when Pataki was still talking --
the whole parading of the Twin Towers attack stopped being about "Look
how America rose to the occasion" and started being a kind of porn.
