World's Largest Truck 06/21/2004 10:31 AM

What's huge, slow, and capable of hauling up to 400 tons of bullshit? While my first response would probably be Slashdot, too, in this case we're describing the Liebherr T 282B truck, a 224 ton monster with a massive 3650-horsepower diesel engine. New Scientist has an interview with Liebherr R&D head Francis Bartleby in which he drops a load of tasty T 282B trivia, like the fact that the huge diesel engine actually generates electricity to power two electric drive motors, and the story about the time a driver of one of the big trucks accidentally crushed a normal-sized service truck and didn't even notice.

World's Largest Book Created

World's Largest Book Created 12/16/2003 01:46 PM
Don't you just hate those books that are just a little too large to fit into your bookshelf? You have to put them on their side, or stick them somewhere else, just because a publisher decided to make the book too damn big. Well, now someone at MIT has made a book so big it's not likely to fit on any bookshelf. It probably won't fit on any coffee table, either. In fact, it's now been certified as the largest book ever created, weighing in at a somewhat stunning 133 pounds. Each of the 112 pages are five feet by seven feet. Apparently, the book costs $2,000 to make, and is being sold for $10,000 complete with a nice display easel to solve the bookshelf problem (they've already sold about two dozen). Money from the sale of the book will go to a charity that is building schools in Cambodia and Bhutan. A more cynical person might note that with all the trees that were needed to make such a book, they probably cleared a nice spot in the field for such schools. And, yes, the book, Bhutan: A Visual Odyssey Across the Last Himalayan Kingdom is available at Amazon (though, currently out of stock).

Problems and Promise in the World's
Largest PKI
02/19/2004 10:13 AM
Implementing a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) on any scale is a challenging, politically-charged task for an IT professional. Even though a working PKI is an important piece of a complete security package for an organization, the lack of interest, misunderstanding, laziness, and downright paranoia of the typical user population can turn a PKI effort into just another morass of documents for which the contractors have been paid and long ago moved on to some new revenue channel. Given the dismal success rate, it's difficult to imagine a successful PKI, not for hundreds or even thousands of users, but for millions. Yet, that seems to be what the Department of Defense (DoD) has accomplished in their Common Access Card (CAC) project - the new identification cards being issued to all US military personnel. To date, CAC PKI project has issued and manages more than six million digital certificates and corresponding smart cards. As someone who has implemented a PKI for a large, diverse organization, I can say that the IT professionals who worked to make the CAC project a success are entitled to pat themselves on the back, but it's also clear that a few problems remain.

Dubailand: world's largest themepark
EVAR

Dubailand: world's largest themepark
EVAR
06/22/2005 01:50 AM
Cory Doctorow: Dubai, a city that is practically a themepark already, is building the world's largest, most expensive, most luxurious themepark, EVAR, called "Dubailand" (what else?). You can tell from the website alone that this is going to be something: vacuous, content-free Flash site, with all the major info hidden behind PDFs and (ugh-ptui!) a Real video. Now notice the "worlds" of Dubailand: "Downtown," "Eco-Tourism," "Retail and Entertainment," "Attractions and Experience," "Sports and Outdoor" and "Themed Leisure and Vacation." Retail and Entertainment? Now that's some forthright theming! Check out the bumpf, especially the FAQs!
Retail & Entertainment World will provide a critical mass of retail facilities providing a wide variety of global brands but also unique boutiques and discount stores, all within the biggest mall in the world - the Mall of Arabia. Entertainment and dining facilities will complement the retail facilities through encouraging tourists to extend the length of their stay at Dubailand, thereby creating further opportunities for purchases....

How many people would be working at Dubailand when it is fully operational?
Dubailand will seek to employ around 300,000 working individuals by 2018 from the various projects in it.

How many visitors a day are you expecting when fully operational?
At peak operational capacity, we have forecast a footfall of some 200,000 visitors a day.

What kind of per capita spend is projected for visitors?
The rates will be an average of USD 100 per day per person not including hotel stay.

Has any study been done on the environmental impact of such a large project in almost virgin desert?
The masterplan has been based on a philosophy of maintaining as much as possible the environmental integrity of the land designated for Dubailand’s development.

How will you maintain the law and order of large crowds?
Dubailand will be coordinating with Dubai Police on relevant security issues.
