Where Was FERC When the Lights Went Out?
Where Was FERC When the Lights Went Out?
08/06/2004 09:40 AMSF Chronicle: Death Star' trader admits manipulating California
market. The Enron Corp. energy trader who devised the notorious
"Death Star'' scheme to bill California for fictitious electricity
pleaded guilty in a San Francisco court to a federal fraud charge and
admitted plotting to manipulate the market during the state's energy
crisis.
Who else should be indicted? An e-mail
correspondent this morning points to one of the worst offenders in
this scandal: the
Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission, where inaction in the face of utter sleaze
is a way of life.
Instead of helping California and the other states that got screwed by
the bandits at Enron and other energy companies, FERC has consistently
stiffed the victims, offering a tidbit here and there but essentially
doing nothing serious.
FERC keeps insisting that it's on the case. We'll need some actual
evidence one of these days.

What is Bryght? Bryght is all of the following:
1. "The Salesforce.com of community content"
2. Content
Management System + Community Blogging System + Email + DNS + Domain
Name Registration + much more (see our features page for more
details)
3. A hosted website service for communities, corporations,
organizations and individuals built using the open source Drupal
system.
What is the relationship between Bryght and StreamLine? None, other
than the fact that I work on both :-) !
Seriously, StreamLine continues to resell Blogware blogs to individuals
and Bryght is focused solely on hosted Drupal sites (with domains,
email and DNS as well).
Why Blogware blogs? Because Blogware is still the best individual
hosted blog service out there.
Why Bryght? Because Bryght is the
best hosted website service for communities.

The end of the light bulb?
E. Fred Schubert, a professor
at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
"claims to have invented a 99-percent efficient reflector
that promises to speed the replacement of light bulbs with
LEDs." According to researchers, this could happen
within the next five years. The current prototype
is bankrolled by
the ARPA and The National Science Foundation
"recently award Schubert's team a $210,000 grant to create in
three years a commercial version of his patented omnidirectional
reflector."
"Schubert claimed that lighting accounts
for 25 percent of U.S. electrical energy consumption. Since white LEDs
emit more light per dollar and generate less unwanted heat, they are
potentially a major energy saver." (see EE Times
link)
Meanwhile, some of the oldtimers
seem to be pretty refractory.

Control TiVo, Lights With Your PSP
04/19/2005 08:47 AM
Myriad hacks are
emerging for the PSP as eager tweakers have their way with the black
box. Add to the list the ability to control your home automation
system (and TiVo) wirelessly. Liquidice explains:
I now
have the ability to turn my lights on and off. [I] have full control
(Play, Stop, Pause, Menu) of my DVD player, TIVO, and High Def TV, all
wirelessly from my PSP. ... I put an image map on [some] graphics and
created some HTML pages which are hosted on my WACI NX server. The
links are crafted so that when the PSP highlights and clicks on a spot
on the image map, it instructs the WACI NX server to send an IR signal
to my A/V equipment or triggers it's relays to cut power on the
lights.
While he doesn't have step-by-step instructions,
he explains his methodologies pretty clearly, and mentions that an
official Sony web browser for the PSP will make things much
simpler.
(#gizmodo frequenter AMIB points out (with some
sass, it's noted) that the PSP isn't so spectacular in this feat
because all the heavy lifting is handled by the home automation web
server. A valid point, by way of saying any device or code that can
make a GET request to a web server can accomplish the same
thing.)

The Man Behind The Bill Gates Email
Forwarding Hoax
06/29/2004 02:15 PMOver the years, there have been
plenty
of
different
variants
on the chain letter urban legend saying that Bill Gates will give you
cash for forwarding on the email. A reporter at Wired Magazine began
to wonder just how these hoax emails got started. While most of the
article goes through how people get suckered into passing on chain
letters all the time (and what their reasoning is), he eventually
(towards the end of the article)
tracks down
the guy who started the very first "Bill Gates will give you money for
forwarding this email" email. The guy started it as a joke, and
never ever expected it to get as far as it did. When it first took
off at a ridiculous rate he got scared that he would get in trouble
for fraud -- but he's been mostly erased by history. Most of the
emails were quickly modified to remove his name (which brings up
completely different questions...). When asked why he didn't want to
claim "credit" for one of the longest-living, constantly mutating
hoaxes, he responds with what the author calls "one of the greatest
social critiques of our age": "I didn't really think of that. It's
just a hoax. And if I admitted to it, why would anyone believe me?"

Bill Gates gets a 4% pay raise
Bill Gates gets a 4% pay raise
09/21/2004 12:24 PMMicrosoft Chairman Bill Gates, the world's richest man, got a modest
pay raise over the last year, according to a company filing.
Gates, who is also the company's chief software architect, received
$901,667 in salary and bonus from the company for the fiscal year
ended June 30, the company revealed in its proxy filing with the
Securities and Exchange Commission. That's up 4.4 percent from the
year earlier total in salary and bonus.
But Gates' increase was lower than the nearly 15 percent rise in pay
and bonus he received the previous fiscal year. The filing also shows
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer received the identical pay and bonus as
Gates, as he has each of the previous two years. Neither executive
received stock options.
With 1.1 billion shares of Microsoft stock, or about 10 percent of its
shares outstanding, Gates' dividends during the year came to about
$175.6 million.
This November, the company plans to pay a special dividend of $3 per
share, subject to shareholder approval. The company announced in July
that Gates will donate his $3.3 billion proceeds of the special
dividend to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the charitable
organization named for him and his wife.

It may just be pocket change for
the richest man in the world, but Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has
been fined $800,000 by the federal government for violating an
antitrust rule. Will the world's richest man feel an $800,000 fine?
The technical incident has nothing to do with the government's massive
antitrust battles with Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates). Gates,
whose fortune has been estimated at more than $40 billion, ran afoul
of the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department's Antitrust
Division for his purchases of stock in a drug company and a

Bill Gates Hasn't Stopped Spam Yet

spam problem and had
a few
ideas on how to stop the problem. Of course, all of those ideas
sounded like ideas that others were already trying -- and there was
still plenty of spam. It's now been a year since Bill Gates said that
his methods could get rid of spam in two years
and it's
not clear if his efforts have done very much. Certainly,
Microsoft has been suing spammers, and some claim that the overall
amount of spam has been decreasing a bit. However, we're still quite
a long way from getting rid of spam -- which means the special
department at Microsoft who's only job is to
manage
Bill Gates' spam (even if it's not
as
much as we were originally told) will probably still have plenty
of work to do a year from now.

Bill Gates : CES Coverage 2005
Bill Gates : CES Coverage 2005
01/06/2005 12:15 AMBill Gates, like many years before, headed up the keynote for the
Consumer Electronics Show 2005. Introduced with some light hearted
comedy by TV presenter Conan O'Brian, Bill Gates keynote announced
Microsoft's plans for the "digital lifestyle" in 2005.
Gates, starting 10 minutes late, announced that many new devices are
joining the "PlaysForSure" Microsoft program; the company
perceives there being problems amongst consumers as them being unsure
as to what music / content plays on what devices. Microsoft hope that
any concerns on these issues will be alleviated by this program. Gates
described music somewhat vaguely as "going digital", and
suggested the company was "pioneering" in the area. He
showed off the
iRiver device, and the
Samsung PMC. The ability to view photos on
PMC devices like the Samsung was touched on by Gates, who discussed
Microsoft’s advances in the area of viewing pictures. He’s hoping to
make it simpler to transfer digital content like pictures onto your PC
and demoed a camera (
Nikon D2X) with new transfer technology, as well
as in built wireless connectivity. Gate’s looked rather frustrated
when attempting to demo slide show technology on MCE 2005;
unfortunately, despite numerous attempts (and comic suggestions from
O’Brian) the slideshow failed to work until later in the show. It
became clear later that the bit had been setup to provide O’Brian / MS
PR team with an opportunity to Photoshop some photos of Gates for
comedy value; all in all the demo had three major failures.
Gates focused on “choice”, highlighting a commitment to letting people
view content when they wanted, on whatever device they wanted. He
described the centre piece for the drive as Windows
Media Center Edition, and noted that they had
shipped 1.4 million MCE devices. Products announced at CES included a
MSN TV device, a DVD Recording device, new SPOT watches, IP-TV, and
much more. Demoed was the MCE Extender for X-Box and MSN Remote Record
(currently in beta, to be launched later this quarter). The DVD
recorder was also demoed; the device is a records DVD’s, and also has
a TV tuner and a hard drive packaged together; the box is made by LG,
and features a MCE-esque style layout, with a very simple
functionality. This device is one of many new “integrated devices”
that Microsoft is keen on launching with MCE 2005. It also became
clear that the company is enthusiastic with High Definition (HD) TV
devices, offering high quality content in the home. One of the
presenters talked about voice, video and data coming through the same
pipe- named "IP-TV", an exciting, high bandwidth (and
perhaps futuristic) vision of content being offered in the years to
come. Software was demoed showing a baseball game where users could
control elements like angles viewed, made possible via IP-TV. The
potentials did seem quite endless for the technology, with a demo
being given on content being streamed from a MCE box onto a mobile
phone, and a mobile phone interacting with the box, functioning as a
big remote control. It’s re-assuring that Microsoft aren’t just
focusing on delivering content to one device (MCE boxes) but much
more; it’s also rather worrying that the company could be dominating
in many more markets.
Gates also announced a partnership between Microsoft, music channel
MTV, and
Tivo. Microsoft's
relationship with MTV is key for its push into the media centre
market. The company badly needs media providers like MTV to create
unique content to get users on the Windows Media platform. As part of
the agreement, MTV (and its sub-sites) will begin streaming content
using WMV 10. Microsoft wants to channel more content from providers
like MTV onto their media devices. The announcement comes with
MSN
Video, offering content for download straight to media devices
like the Creative Zen PMC. "We've declared our vision of enabling
digital entertainment anywhere, and today we are delivering three more
solutions to make that possible," said Blair Westlake, VP of
Media at Microsoft.
Tivo's recently launched "
TiVoToGo" will be done in partership with
Microsoft, allowing customers to transfer content recorded from TV
onto their Windows PC. Microsoft will offer a membership based
download service from the site, charging $19.99 per year for
un-limited access to content offered online. Content will be available
from Microsoft partners like MTV, as well as CNBC, MSNBC, Fox Sports,
Cookie Jar, Home and Garden TV, DIY Network, Food Network, Fine
Living, iFilm, Want Media and Break TV. Content offered will be
suitable for the range of "PlaysForSure" devices and will
later be compatible with Smartphones and Pocket PCs that support
video.
Xbox news was limited to discussion about the
products achievements over the past year, and noted that the X-Box
actually outsold the PS2. He noted
Halo-2’s
success, and said that there were 6.2m users playing the game. He
noted a commitment to making it easier for developers to code games
for the Xbox platform. Rumours that CES would see the launch of X-Box
2 were false; he touched on the fact that the next generation of Xbox
would be taking advantage of much higher graphics power, which
combined with HD-TV would produce much more enticing games.
All in all, Gates announced an impressive line up of new products at
CES. Although MCE didn't really take off as well as it might have last
year, the company hopes that 2005 will see far more interest in the
product. Microsoft hopes to re-assert itself in areas where it perhaps
lagged behind, and the offerings shown at this years CES are certain
impressive enough to make a good start.

04/28/2004 05:25 PMFor the first time ever in the two years I've been blogging, I have
closed the comments on an entry. I always thought I could never get
enough comments, but the things happening on the semi-legendary Bill Gates entry need to stop. Comments are
split between very sad stories, and people making fun of those sad
stories.
While I was at it, I closed the comments on the
Bush and Clinton entries as well. People thought they were talking to
Bush (a title of "Emailing the President" probably didn't help), and
the Clinton thing is straying too far into politics (admittedly, my
own comments aggravated this).
I had to dig out the manuals to find the right tag to close them,
because I removed that tag from my template long ago, thinking I'd
never want to close the comments on anything.

Microsoft's Gates Touts Blogging as
Business Tool
Gates described to his audience, which included Warren Buffett,
Jeff Bezos, Michael Dell, Carly Fiorina, Barry Diller and other top
business executives, how blogs worked and suggested that they could be
used as a tool for businesses to communicate with customers.
[...]
Microsoft, which has already amassed more than 700 employee
bloggers talking up its products and software in development, is
embracing blogs and RSS technology because they are yet another
potential threat and opportunity, said Joe Wilcox, analyst at Jupiter
Research.
[...]
Instead of RSS, however, Google is also promoting a rival
syndication standard called Atom.
So, we already knew that
Microsoft knows about and cares about blogs. Does the fact that Bill
Gates explained blogs to a bunch of people who already knew what blogs
were mean anything substantive?
Scoble, can you
give us the inside skinny? Is this going to turn into a Google-Atom
vs. Microsoft-RSS war as the article insinuates?
