Search Engines: A Mixed Bag: A Review of Some New Search Engines by Phil Bradley
http://www.ari adne.ac.uk/issue40/search-engines/

People are of course aware that Google isn't the only search engine out there, by any manner or means, and although many people regard it as the biggest and the best, this certainly isn't the case for those organisations who decide that they want a share of the search engine market. Phil Bradley looks at some of the new search engines that have appeared, and will see how many of them make the grade. Reviewed are:

Steam Boy Trailer

Steam Boy Trailer 04/23/2004 12:06 PM
Scott sez: "Steam Boy, the long awaited and highly anticipated Anime film from Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo is finally nearing completion and is slated for release later this year. The trailer is up on the Japanese site and looks damn cool. From what I can see Otomo has once again created dazzling visuals -- the lush Victorian interiors and the elegance of the mechanical designs (Steam Punk, anyone?) should leave everyone in awe. The film cost 2.4 billion Yen (US$20.2m) to produce, just a few dollars short of the 2.4 billion Yen that it cost to produce Spirited Away, the most expensive Anime feature ever. In contrast, Steam Boy comprises 180 000 cels, 1.5 times as many as Spirited Away." Link

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven 08/23/2004 08:53 AM

sharp_steam5.jpg imageSharp has a new small oven that uses superheated steam to not only cook and reheat food, but melt excess salt and fat away from meats and other delicious dishes. Sharp quotes up to eight times as much fat removed by cooking a steak in the AX-HC1 ovens than frying in a pan, while reheating tempura and other fried foods removed up to 13% of their oil content.

Sharp will be releasing the oven in the US sometime soonish, although for now the $1,150 is Japan-only. I'm waiting for the oven that uses superheated steam to turn all my food into a nutritionless, guiltless slurry.

Sharp Healsio Steam Oven

Sharp Healsio Steam Oven 03/28/2005 07:50 AM

sharp_healsio.jpgSharp's Healsio oven puts a spin on the traditional convention or microwave oven, using the power of steam heated to about 570 degrees to cook your food. The steam apparently reduces the total fat content by effectively melting it while still preserving the food's nutrients. Sharp even demonstrated toasting bread, proving that not everything comes out as glue. The oven allows the user to steam, grill, roast, bake, (broast, brible), defrost and reheat their food by spraying the steam directly onto the food. Sharp's press release goes into excruciating detail on how their new $1,100 oven works and the health benefits it offers. Launched in Singapore, it will reach North America later this year.

The U.K.'s National Archives has pledged to put 1,000 years of history on the Web by 2007, creating a single "gateway" that will enable other archives, museums, libraries and universities to find information online 24 hours a day. The National Archives was created last year by merging the Public Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission. "In its first year, National Archives has created the first ever online archives of government Web sites and made over 3.5m documents available online," says National Archives chief executive Sarah Tyacke. In pursuing its ambitious goal the National Archives plans to improve the way records are managed and selected and will launch a campaign to raise public awareness and understanding of archives. Eventually, the organization will provide digital archive services to anyone who's a history buff, says Tyacke.

imageHepped up, hot rodding sister site Jalopnik reports that steam is hot—especially inside of cars, where a British Steam Car Challenge team plans to put the gaseous gas vapor. The 'Inspiration' is a 300 horsepower steam-fired car that might just hit 200mph with an turbine that will hit almost 12,000 rpm. The English engineers are perhaps best known for their work on the 'Chamomilean,' a color-changing tea pot that reached almost 10,000 tps (toots per second) in the 2nd Annual Grey Earl Poppycockery Exhibition and Kennel Run.
