02/17/2004 07:50 PMWhen I think back to ETCon and my time in America my mind can't
help catching onto images of Hor
ton Plaza in San Diego - the Escher-like mall-from-hell that kind
of sat in my head and unfolded its sprawling, immoral, monstrous,
mis-shapen, rhizomatic self into the nether regions of my cerebral
cortex while I was busy looking for Tacos. I've tried to collage
together a partially exploded view of the place but it's not particularly representative.
Apparently the architect wanted to create an 'architecture of
confusion' where you would get completely immersed in the experience
of the place, not want to leave and stumble upon new shops
serendipitously. Personally I found the place mind-destroying,
confusing, uncomfortable and not-a-little creepy. I kept seeing shops
that I wanted to get to but could see no obvious way to do so and
wandering down apparent walkways or paths that would suddenly turn
into cul-de-sac balconies. It took me fifteen minutes to find the top
floor food-court and a further ten to escape. The maps were of no help
whatsoever. I kept expecting to see David Bowie glued to a
ceiling twirling a glass orb on his fingertips. Very strange.

in some circles as almost every major announcement in the field is
later disproven or made highly questionable when the results weren't
reproducible. However, some researchers won't give up, and some are
saying that, while it may still be early, some of the
experiments are showing reproducible results, suggesting that
there may actually be something to the theories. After so many people
have been burned by cold fusion claims, it makes sense to remain
skeptical for now, but maybe the science isn't as pseudo as some
believed.

is using a Web site to let people outfit fantasy Fusions — a new
sedan coming next year. But they're not just throwing away the
data.
It's an attempt to more closely align consumer demand with actual
production, which often can be difficult.
The company is letting virtual shoppers build their own Fusions on
the Web, including pricing options and picking colors. At the end,
people are asked to fill out a survey giving their thoughts on what
else they'd like to see on the cars.
So if 60% of the people make fake Fusions in the color blue, guess
what color the majority of real Fusions will be?

04/19/2005 11:06 AMIt's funny how every year or so, some company comes out with a claim
that it has created the
absolute perfect copy
protection system that works perfectly every time, preventing
unauthorized copying, but allowing authorized playback. The latest
such claim comes along with amusing boasts such as its ability to
"wipe out" file sharing. Beyond the fact that most content companies
(despite their claims) don't want to wipe out file sharing, there
simply is no way to make a perfect copy protection system. If the
content needs to be seen, listened to or read, then there will be a
way to make a copy and get it on a file sharing system. It's that
simple. Of course, we're dealing with industries that seem to have no
problems whatsoever in exaggerating claims -- so perhaps it's normal.
Next thing you know, we'll find out that these firms are working on
cold fusion and perpetual motion machines.

The War Against Cold
Fusion. Are our scientists selling us short? Is there a
conspiracy?
Are we addicted to
large, expensive and ungainly projects? Are our scientists blinded
by the almighty dollar, the grandiose, the overtly kinetic?
If it seems too simple or too good to be true, are we even capable of
accepting proof if it isn't? Is free - well, almost free - a dirty
word? Are we getting screwed in the interest of profits yet
again?
