Surfing a Tsunami

Surfing a Tsunami 12/27/2004 03:36 PM

Mark Frauenfelder: Rogier sez: "Most people would do anything to get out of the way of a tsunami. But daredevils with a death wish would like to RIDE one, and they're keeping their surf boards ready. Officials in Hawaii are still a bit freaked out by the memory of 400-plus surf enthusiasts showing up on the beaches of Oahu ten years ago, trying to catch a killer wave. To prevent a repeat, a public-safety DVD has been distributed through Hawaiian surf shops this fall.

"The message is sure to get lost on this guy, who was caught on film riding a monster wave that would give mere mortals heart attacks (though from the looks of it, it isn't nearly on the magnitude of the walls of waters that wiped out tens of thousands of people in South East Asia yesterday). Conference call surfing

Conference call surfing 08/27/2004 01:34 PM

I have my PowerBook on my insTand next to my bed with a clock screen saver alarm clock. Usually, I wake up before my alarm goes off and wake up the computer instead. As soon as my status on my IM clients goes from idle to available, I get a little flurry of requests for contact. "Did you see my email?" "When can we talk?" "Don't forget our conference call coming up." "We're on a conference call right now you might want to join." I queue up these real-time requests like some sort of air traffic controller, put on my headset hooked up to my Vonage phone and get started. Today, I started the morning with an conference call on the fly with a few people on a one of the many free conference call bridges. During the call, I got an IM that I might want to drop into another conference call in progress. After my first call, I joined the second conference call which was already well on its way. I got the URL of the wiki page of the agenda and notes via IM, scanned them, and made a few comments. Then I was off again to my next call which I had queued with someone on IRC.

My question is, am I a weirdo or an edge case for how people will work once we all have IM and voice and conference calls are free.

The Personal Surfing Menace

The Personal Surfing Menace 06/29/2004 02:15 PM
What is it with filtering companies and their need to put out fear-filled studies about just how many people are (gasp!) surfing non-work sites at work? Plenty of studies have shown that a little personal personal surfing at work may be a good thing for productivity and employee health and morale. It lets them recharge their batteries, as well as take care of personal business that might drag them fully away from work otherwise. However, companies that sell filters always feel the need to bring it up as if it's some sort of horrible office problem. That's true in the latest study by some random web filtering company that points out that people see other employees at work surfing shopping and news sites all the time. What's amusing is that, rather than asking people if they do these things, the survey asks them only if they've "seen others" do it -- and then follows it up by noting that 35% were "bothered" by seeing others shopping online while 29% were bothered by others' sports surfing. First off, just because so many people see others doing it, it doesn't mean that they all are. In an office of 100 people, there could be one person doing personal surfing (1%), but everyone could see them, giving a response of 99% - so the numbers are misleading. Second, there's no indication of other issues related to what bothers people. If you see someone who isn't getting their work done at all, then perhaps it makes sense to be bothered to find out they're checking up on the latest scores. However, if they're productive, who cares? Why should it matter if one employee is bothered that another is surfing a sports site? Perhaps that employee is bothered that the other one keeps peaking over the cubicle wall to see what they're surfing. Maybe the company should start making taller cubicles to protect against that "bothersome" issue. The study also plays the "oh no! porn!" card to scare people as well -- warning that office workers are often "accidentally" exposed to porn. What's really amusing here is that, unlike with the personal surfing questions (which ask about co-workers' activities), the questions on porn surfing were asked of the worker themselves, making it much more likely that they'll say it was an "accident." When you do so something, it's an accident. When someone else does it, it's problematic. But, don't worry, this filtering company will solve all those problems...

Surfing property rights

Surfing property rights 08/10/2004 02:05 PM
Great blog entry about the rules regarding surfers' "property rights" of ocean waves and how the surfing community enforces them.
How do surfers enforce their wave rights? For the most part, they rely on the gentle arts of social suasion. Surfers bobbing in the line-up make up a community of sorts, one often strengthened by the presence of locals who know and look out for each other. Getting the stink-eye for dropping in on somebody else’s wave stings badly enough. Sanctions against repeat offenders may escalate to sharp words or, in extraordinary cases, to physical violence. When someone dropped in on me recently, for instance, I first forebore the offense, then took alarm at his unsafe proximity and verbally warned him to back-off. Finally, when that proved unavailing, I put my hand on the punk’s chest, shoved him off his board, and finished out my ride.

Will You Get Different Prices Depending
On Where You're Surfing?
07/12/2004 12:14 PM
Various services are getting much better at figuring out what part of the world you happen to be surfing the internet from. Sometimes, this can be useful, in helping to customize a search to your particular needs. Some companies use it to try to throw up local advertising. While some are worried about the privacy aspects, a bigger question may be how far the customization will go. A few years ago, Amazon.com ran into a public relations nightmare when they revealed that they were offering different prices to different visitors. Even if that's a more efficient way of doing business, something felt "unfair" about it to most people. Now, some expect websites to start doing something similar based on geography. That is, if you're surfing from a higher income area, the prices you see will be higher. Again, if this does actually happen, expect there to be something of a backlash -- even if it is what happens out there in the brick-and-mortar world. Local stores often charge based on the region they're in, and not on some nationally agreed upon price. Still, if this does happen, it won't be long before services are available to make it appear as if you're surfing from a cheap region, and the whole point of the geographically differentiated pricing system will go away.

CEOs Sort Of Discover Ego Surfing

CEOs Sort Of Discover Ego Surfing 12/28/2004 05:52 AM
Do CEOs of major companies sit down at their computer, call up Google and do a little ego surfing? Of course they do... but they mostly seem unwilling to tell USA Today about it (probably because they decided to call it the especially corny "CEgO surfing"), meaning that USA Today had to do it for them. Basically, they went around and looked up the names of various CEOs to see what they would see, if they did do the searches themselves. There is, of course, a mixture of good and bad -- but the article recommends that CEOs spend a bit of time every once in a while to check out what their names reveal. The article notes that Ford's CEO refuses to ego surf, claiming it's "too depressing," which makes you wonder how he would know that... unless he ego surfed.

Rethinking Personal Surfing At Work

Rethinking Personal Surfing At Work 12/12/2003 02:03 PM
For the past few years, every other month or so, some scary report would be released about how "personal surfing" at work was happening. Each one of these studies just happened to be sponsored by a company that sold internet filtering technology to stop personal surfing at work. It looks like more people are starting to wonder wh at's so bad about a little personal surfing at work? Most jobs now expect employees to be able to do some work at home, so, doing a few personal things at work seems perfectly fair. Studies have shown that workers who do some personal surfing at work are more productive and have improved skills and a better work/life balance. They get nagging things out of the way, and use the personal surfing as small breaks during the day to clear their head and remain focused. The first link above makes a very important point: there's a difference between "non-productive" surfing and "counter-productive" surfing. It's the counter-productive surfing that is what people should be concerned about, but because it sells more filters, the filtering companies have lumped counter-productive surfing with non-productive "coffee break" surfing. As the article points out, if there's too much non-productive surfing going on, it probably means that the employee isn't being challenged enough. Furthermore, workplaces that are too strict with their internet policies make employees feel stifled - which drops morale and (surprise, surprise) productivity.

Personal Surfing At Work Is Good

Personal Surfing At Work Is Good 11/05/2003 07:06 PM
Every time another study comes out, commissioned by a web filtering company, saying that (oh no!) people are doing personal surfing at work - I wonder what's wrong with a little personal surfing at work? I certainly do it, and it's useful for me to take a mental breather and keep my batteries charged. I encourage my employees to do it as well. Contrary to web filtering and short sighted managers' beliefs, it's really not a good thing to force someone to remain engaged non-stop for an entire day. Their productivity actually goes down. Finally, some researchers have come up with a study to support that. Researchers have shown that letting employees do some personal surfing at work leads to "better time management, stress reduction, improvement of skill sets and helping to achieve a balance between work and personal life." This follows a study earlier this year that said employees who surfed at work ended up making it up elsewhere. Perhaps people are finally realizing there's a difference between time spent working and productivity. Now where's the study saying work-time naps are also helpful to productivity?

Who's Surfing Internet Porn? Might Not

Who's Surfing Internet Porn? Might Not
Be Who You Would Expect
01/02/2004 02:30 PM
A recent study from Nielsen/NetRatings has found that, despite the general perception of who is surfing porn sites, one-third of porn site visitors are women. The article doesn't go into details, so it's unclear how they defined "porn sites" and how they measured this. They do quote one woman who claims that "you can get both education and inspiration" from the sites. So, maybe that's the defense schools and libraries should use for not filtering the internet: it's "educational" (yes, I'm joking). Anyway, I don't think it's all that surprising that there are women who like porn (studies have shown that before), but I'd say the details of the study need to be explained a bit more before people go jumping to conclusions.
