Microsoft: No IA64 for Windows XP

Microsoft: No IA64 for Windows XP

Microsoft: No IA64 for Windows XP 12/27/2004 03:35 PM

After removing all references to the 64-bit (IA64) Windows XP here, we've spoken to sources close to the company who have confirmed Microsoft's intensions to axe XP IA64. The company wants to focus on Windows Server 2003 editions of Itanium-based systems.

Q: What about Windows XP for Itanium? Is Microsoft still continuing work around that version?

A: Microsoft is excited about the opportunity that x64 technology affords. Because Windows on x64 systems delivers excellent flexibility and choice, while also enabling a smooth migration from 32-bit to 64bit applications, Microsoft believes Windows for Itanium-based systems is a stronger offering in the high-end server market. As such, Microsoft has made the decision to focus its investments in research and development on this new x64 (64-bit extended) architecture and discontinue further investments in the Itanium architecture for workstations.

It is important to emphasize that Microsoft will continue to promote and offer Windows Server 2003 Enterprise and Datacenter Editions for Itanium-based systems, intended for customers who require the highest levels of scalability. For the mainstream server and workstation markets, however, we believe we can best serve our customers needs with Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition, and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, respectively.

So if you were wondering about what happened to Itanium 64bit Windows XP, there's your answer.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently a Release Candidate in Beta testing, includes significant enhancements to the Windows Firewall component, previously known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based firewall that discards unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level of protection for computers against malicious users or programs. To provide better protection for computers connected to any kind of network (such as the Internet, a home network, or an organization network), Windows XP SP2 enables Windows Firewall on all network connections by default. This new behavior can impair some types of communications. This article describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration settings for Windows Firewall on an organization network so that it is enabled and providing protection, and so that communications are not impaired.

Today at its Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft Corp. introduced Windows® Marketplace, an upcoming shopping and downloading site that will provide customers with one-stop access to software, hardware and peripherals that work with the Windows platform. This new offering provides a cost-effective way for participating partners to work with Microsoft and CNET Networks to gain exposure to millions of potential customers through online shopping and electronic software distribution -- all in one place. Windows Marketplace also will make it easy for customers to navigate, find, try and buy thousands of compelling products to meet their needs and enhance their Windows computing experience. Microsoft looks beyond Windows

Microsoft looks beyond Windows 07/31/2004 07:22 PM
Microsoft is looking beyond Windows for technologies to fuel the future growth of the company.

Talking to financial analysts Bill Gates said search software, games, consumer goodies and lab research would all help Microsoft grow. During his speech Mr Gates showed off early versions of programs designed to compete with arch-rival Google. He said novel technologies had to fuel expansion because markets for other Microsoft products were saturated.

Strong competition

At its annual analyst meeting Microsoft unveiled a prototype of an MSN toolbar that works with the Internet Explorer browser. As well as letting people search the net, it also lets them query the documents, images, e-mails or spreadsheets stored on their PC. The add-on is squarely pitched at the efforts of Google and Lycos, standalone search software from firms such as Enfish and newcomers such as Blinkx. The toolbar is due to be released within 12 months. Microsoft has also unveiled a new version of its MSN search engine that it hopes will start to wean people off their reliance on Google.

Microsoft Windows XP x64 RTM

Microsoft Windows XP x64 RTM 03/31/2005 12:35 PM
Microsoft has just announced that Windows XP Professional x64 has been RTM. MSDN subscribers can download ISO files of the RTM build immediately, while the rest of us will have to wait till x64 becomes commercially available in late April. Microsoft still plans to offer a special program which will allow legitimately purchased copies of 32-bit XP Professional to be traded in for copies of the new 64-bit variant.

It will be interesting to see what final software and hardware support is like in x64. Paul Thurrott extensively reviewed x64 RC2 in late February, stressing that 32-bit software support was less than stellar. ”Software compatibility in XP x64, currently, is a disaster. Don't get me wrong: Most 32-bit applications do indeed install and run on XP x64 just fine. But I suspect that most people who try out this system over the next several months will be irritated to find that one of more crucial applications will not install at all, and that alone will give many a bad experience. Most of them, I suspect, will run right back to XP 32-bit.” Stay with Neowin as we look into software compatibility and performance issues with XP x64 RTM.

XP x64 is expected to yield a performance increase of around 35% to native x64 applications. (Generic 32-bit applications should see no performance change.) Microsoft will be launching XP x64 at this years WinHEC conference in Seattle (April 25-27) where it also plans to debut a new developer preview build of Windows Longhorn.

Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday it will adopt all changes imposed by European Union antitrust regulators to its stripped-down version of Windows sold without the Media Player program. U.S. software maker's top lawyer in Europe, Horacio Gutierrez, said the company had contacted the European Commission "to inform them that we have accepted all the main changes they have requested." Changes to the Windows program will include deleting references to Media Player from product documentation, boxes and help files. Alterations also include creating a software package that allows consumers to put back the programs and settings that were removed from the Media Player-less version, which EU regulators demanded Microsoft to offer consumers.

Microsoft Says Buy New Windows or Be

Microsoft Says Buy New Windows or Be
Unsafe
09/24/2004 09:49 PM
  • CNet: Microsoft: To secure IE, upgrade to XP. Microsoft this week reiterated that it would keep the new version of Microsoft's IE Web browser available only as part of the recently released Windows XP operating system, Service Pack 2. The upgrade to XP from any previous Windows versions is $99 when ordered from Microsoft. Starting from scratch, the operating system costs $199. That, analysts say, is a steep price to pay to secure a browser that swept the market as a free, standalone product.
  • So much for the notion that Microsoft might ever turn over a new leaf. A company with more than $50 billion in cash at the end of the last quarter is refusing to help its customers, despite the company's song and dance about wanting security to be the top priority. The stance is even worse when you consider that XP is basically just an upgrade of Windows 2000 -- built from the same code base, that is. There might be a small case to be made for orphaning earlier versions of Windows, which are very different code, but this is just too much. Plenty of enterprise customers are doing just fine with Windows 2000. Microsoft's message to them is "screw you; upgrade or face the consequences." Installing Mozilla or Opera isn't sufficient, because IE components have been boiled into the OS and will be launched even if users don't want them to. Again, we see why Microsoft should have been broken up -- and why the browser should be a separate application.
