Deploying Windows Firewall Settings for
Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2
(v 2)
05/07/2004 01:56 AMWindows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently a Release Candidate in Beta
testing, includes significant enhancements to the Windows Firewall
component, previously known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).
Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based firewall that discards
unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level of protection for
computers against malicious users or programs. To provide better
protection for computers connected to any kind of network (such as the
Internet, a home network, or an organization network), Windows XP SP2
enables Windows Firewall on all network connections by default. This
new behavior can impair some types of communications. This article
describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration settings for
Windows Firewall on an organization network so that it is enabled and
providing protection, and so that communications are not impaired.

Windows Server 2003
11/04/2003 10:55 AMMicrosoft Corp. today announced public availability of Windows®
Rights Management Services (RMS), information protection technology
for Windows Server (TM) 2003 that helps enterprises and organizations
safeguard their sensitive digital information from unauthorized use.
RMS allows information workers to distribute information within their
organizations and define how and under what circumstances it can be
used, such as when it expires and who can open, modify, print and
forward it. The ability to express and enforce document-level
protection will allow organizations to internally share information
more broadly, with less risk of inadvertent or intentional misuse.

Discover A World of Products That Work
With Windows
07/12/2004 09:23 AMToday at its Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft Corp. introduced
Windows® Marketplace, an upcoming shopping and downloading site that
will provide customers with one-stop access to software, hardware and
peripherals that work with the Windows platform. This new offering
provides a cost-effective way for participating partners to work with
Microsoft and CNET Networks to gain exposure to millions of potential
customers through online shopping and electronic software distribution
-- all in one place. Windows Marketplace also will make it easy for
customers to navigate, find, try and buy thousands of compelling
products to meet their needs and enhance their Windows computing
experience. Windows Marketplace is scheduled to launch to end-user
customers in the United States this fall, but Microsoft is giving
partners an early opportunity to get their products into the
Marketplace before it becomes available publicly.

Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

Microsoft looks beyond Windows
Microsoft looks beyond Windows
07/31/2004 07:22 PMMicrosoft is looking beyond Windows for technologies to fuel the
future growth of the company.
Talking to financial analysts Bill Gates said search software, games,
consumer goodies and lab research would all help Microsoft grow.
During his speech Mr Gates showed off early versions of programs
designed to compete with arch-rival Google. He said novel technologies
had to fuel expansion because markets for other Microsoft products
were saturated.
Strong competition
At its annual analyst meeting Microsoft unveiled a prototype of an MSN
toolbar that works with the Internet Explorer browser. As well as
letting people search the net, it also lets them query the documents,
images, e-mails or spreadsheets stored on their PC. The add-on is
squarely pitched at the efforts of Google and Lycos, standalone search
software from firms such as Enfish and newcomers such as Blinkx. The
toolbar is due to be released within 12 months. Microsoft has also
unveiled a new version of its MSN search engine that it hopes will
start to wean people off their reliance on Google.

Microsoft Windows XP x64 RTM
03/31/2005 12:35 PMMicrosoft has just announced that Windows XP Professional x64 has been
RTM. MSDN subscribers can download ISO files of the RTM build
immediately, while the rest of us will have to wait till x64 becomes
commercially available in late April. Microsoft still plans to offer a
special program which will allow legitimately purchased copies of
32-bit XP Professional to be traded in for copies of the new 64-bit
variant.
It will be interesting to see what final software and hardware support
is like in x64. Paul Thurrott extensively reviewed x64 RC2 in late
February, stressing that 32-bit software support was less than
stellar.
”Software compatibility in XP x64, currently, is
a disaster. Don't get me wrong: Most 32-bit applications do indeed
install and run on XP x64 just fine. But I suspect that most people
who try out this system over the next several months will be irritated
to find that one of more crucial applications will not install at all,
and that alone will give many a bad experience. Most of them, I
suspect, will run right back to XP 32-bit.” Stay with
Neowin as we look into software compatibility and performance issues
with XP x64 RTM.
XP x64 is expected to yield a performance increase of around 35% to
native x64 applications. (Generic 32-bit applications should see no
performance change.) Microsoft will be launching XP x64 at this years
WinHEC conference in Seattle (April 25-27) where it also plans to
debut a new developer preview build of Windows Longhorn.

03/30/2005 01:22 AMMicrosoft Corp. said Tuesday it will adopt all changes imposed by
European Union antitrust regulators to its stripped-down version of
Windows sold without the Media Player program.
U.S. software maker's top lawyer in Europe, Horacio Gutierrez, said
the company had contacted the European Commission "to inform them that
we have accepted all the main changes they have requested."
Changes to the Windows program will include deleting references to
Media Player from product documentation, boxes and help files.
Alterations also include creating a software package that allows
consumers to put back the programs and settings that were removed from
the Media Player-less version, which EU regulators demanded Microsoft
to offer consumers.

Microsoft Says Buy New Windows or Be

09/24/2004 09:49 PMCNet: Microsoft: To secure IE, upgrade to
XP. Microsoft this week reiterated that it would keep the new
version of Microsoft's IE Web browser available only as part of the
recently released Windows XP operating system, Service Pack 2. The
upgrade to XP from any previous Windows versions is $99 when ordered
from Microsoft. Starting from scratch, the operating system costs
$199. That, analysts say, is a steep price to pay to secure a browser
that swept the market as a free, standalone product.
So much for the notion that Microsoft might ever turn
over a new leaf.
A company with more than $50 billion in cash at the end of the last
quarter is refusing to help its customers, despite the company's song
and dance about wanting security to be the top priority. The stance is
even worse when you consider that XP is basically just an upgrade of
Windows 2000 -- built from the same code base, that is. There might be
a small case to be made for orphaning earlier versions of Windows,
which are very different code, but this is just too much.
Plenty of enterprise customers are doing just fine with Windows 2000.
Microsoft's message to them is "screw you; upgrade or face the
consequences." Installing Mozilla or Opera isn't sufficient, because
IE components have been boiled into the OS and will be launched even
if users don't want them to.
Again, we see why Microsoft should have been broken up -- and why the
browser should be a separate application.
