Spymac sets up Asian Disaster Relief
Fund
12/29/2004 02:21 PMMonetary donations are now being accepted for Spymac’s Asian Disaster
Relief Fund set up today to help the International Red Cross meet the
needs of 11 countries affected by the devastating earthquake which
struck the area two days ago.
Spymac is an international community and many members have been
affected by the tragedy. We extend our condolences to members in that
region. Donations to the Spymac relief fund can be made using PayPal.
Members making donations of $25 or more will receive ad-free status on
their membership for a two-week period. Donations will be accepted
until January 16, 2005. On that day, Spymac will celebrate its third
birthday by turning the fund over to the Red Cross. Upon request,
official tax-deductible receipts will be issued by the Red Cross.
Food, medical supplies and water purification systems have started
trickling into the devastated areas, as the United Nations warned this
could be the biggest relief effort ever known. The body count has
risen to more than 60,000 dead in 11 countries, with thousands still
missing and more than a million left homeless. The UN estimates that
nearly a third of the dead are children. The International Red Cross
says more than one million people have been displaced and many have
had to resort to looting to survive.

Disaster Relief News
01/06/2005 09:25 AMI just heard on the news another reason to give as much as you can to
the tsunami relief effort. Congress is well on its way to approving
legislation to allow all money donated to a recognized charity by
January 31st to be 100% deductible from LAST YEAR’S tax bill.
It’s not the reason to donate, but since it may not end up
costing you anything out of your pocket, it could well be
easier…

Xeni Jardin:

John Schwartz wrote an insightful piece for the
New York
Times this week about the role blogs play in covering and
responding to the tsunami disaster. I was interviewed for the piece,
but the people who really have something interesting and valuable to
say are the ones over there, on the ground -- and the folks rolling up
their geek sleeves to assist.
From relaying first-person accounts (like Sanjay/Morquendi's SMS reports in Sri Lanka), to kick-starting relief efforts
(tsunamihelp.blogspot.com,
and the
Post-Tsunami Reconnect project), to questioning media coverage (
Ethan Zuckerman's post about Myanmar), there's a lot going on here
The amateur-shot image shown here ran in the NYT story. Snip:
"At sumankumar.com, Nanda
Kishore, a contributor, offered photos and commentary from Chennai,
India: 'Some drenched till their hips, some till their chest, some all
over and some of them were so drenched that they had already stopped
breathing. Men and women, old and young, all were running for lives.
It was a horrible site to see. The relief workers could not attend to
all the dead and all the alive. The dead were dropped and the half
alive were carried to safety.' His postings included a photo of a body
on a sidewalk with a buffalo walking by. 'It now seems prophetic," he
wrote, "for according to the Hindu mythology, Lord Yama (the god of
death) rides on a buffalo.'"

Fox News did a segment on this subject yesterday. I spoke with anchor
Jon Scott about some of the blogosphere reports we've been pointing to
from BoingBoing in recent days. Here are video clips of the Fox News
segment: Real, Windows (Many thanks, Mike Outmesguine, for TiVoing and
kindly hosting.)

01/05/2005 03:28 AMIn the aftermath of the tsunamis that devastated Asia in late December
2004, observers pointed out that lack of official, credible
information gave victims and governments in the area little prior
warning of the impending disaster. Although still in the developmental
stages, a partnership of the Global Disaster Information Network
(GDIN) and the Organsation for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD) is creating an information system that may significantly reduce
the impact of future natural and manmade disasters. Native American
Pueblo and Navajo Nations in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado
are providing pilot sites for the GDIN system. [PRWEB Jan 5, 2005]
Experiences of the day
Experiences of the day
05/31/2004 05:20 PMBugger. Missed
Misu. But,
on the other hand, I had my first official riding lesson today, and
got even a couple of compliments during the day. One from the riding
instructor ("You sit really well"), and one from a colleague
at work:
"Everything is always complex with you."
That kinda surprised me. I don't know. Is it?
Today, I came home, completely drenched (it rained throughout the
entire lesson). I hung my wet clothes to dry, slipped into some
comfortable clothes, pulled on some thick woollen socks, and made
myself a couple of sandwiches (from wonderful, fresh rye bread) and a
large cup of cocoa. Then I curled on the sofa and watched two
episodes from the fourth season of Babylon 5 from a freshly opened
package.
I'm not that complex. Really.

because I'm trying to understand the market for vehicles capable of

(Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner, etc). I must say, I'm
underwhelmed. The pickings are so much better over in the autos
