System Tray Whack-a-Mole

System Tray Whack-a-Mole 01/27/2004 06:22 PM

One of my biggest pet peeves is Windows software that doesn't run need to run all the time, but still feels the need to put some crappy icon in the system tray. Honestly, folks, there's not much legitimate reason for Real Player and Quicktime to have components that start up every time I run my computer. To me, adding an unnecessary icon to my system tray is only slightly more polite than taking a dump on my front porch.

Mike Lin has written two great apps to help with this. One's called Startup Control Panel, which provides a quick interface to view (and optionally remove) all of the things that start up when you log in. There are a half dozen places in the registry that do this, so it's great to have them all together like this. I was amazed to find programs in there for about 8 shareware programs that I tried once and never used again.

Once you're clean, you can stay that way with Startup Monitor, a very tiny app that runs in the background and lets you know when a program is trying to put more crap in your startup, and gives you the option of preventing it.

These apps probably aren't for novice users, as some of these programs may not run well without their startup components, but geeks will appreciate the convenience.

Check out some of the other programs on Mike Lin's site while you're there. Mike is apparently an evil genius, and has concocted quite a few small, light apps that address some of Windows' niggling little annoyances.

Hotspot Helper

Hotspot Helper 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
MediaTracker is offering a low-cost way for venues to manage their hotspots: The management software, ControlAP, costs $149 and can support several platforms and both external APs plugged into a computer or an internal wireless card. Because the software is Java based, it can be run from a handheld with a wireless card. "It's a do-it-yourself mechanism to control hotspots," said Dario Laverde, MediaTracker's founder. "The initial target is cafes and small store fronts." The software enables a captive portal Web page where end users can sign in or see a welcome page if the hot spot is free. For now, a cafe may decide to offer 30 minutes of free use, then require customers to approach the counter where they pay the barista for additional use. A cafe could also ask customers to buy another coffee in exchange for additional use rather than set a price based on time, Laverde suggested. An employee authorizes additional use from a computer behind the counter where the ControlAP software can be integrated with existing point-of-sale software. The next version of ControlAP will support credit card billing. The software logs traffic and allows a cafe to block URLs or users by MAC address. It can be used to manage wired connections, too, so a cafe that may have some wired computers available for customers can manage those together with users of the Wi-Fi network from the same tool. Laverde says that thousands of people have downloaded the free version of the software, which is meant to serve as a trial version because it limits simultaneous users to five and offers stripped-down features. The full version of the software was just introduced this week. MediaTracker isn't alone in the market chasing independent cafes that don't want to partner with any of the larger hotspot operators, but it does offer some unique differences from its competitors. Surf and Sip, for example, offers a hosted hotspot management solution that either costs $50 per month if the hotspot is free for users, or 25 percent of profits for a paid location. Sputnik offers a robust solution for managing hotspots but is designed for the small to medium-sized hotspot operator that has multiple locations. AirPath Wireless also offers a hotspot management solution but seems to be targeting larger hot spot operators--Sprint uses AirPath's solution. NoCatAuth is also an option but appropriate mostly for technical folks....

Quick look: 466 MHz G4 tray-loading iMac
upgrade
09/03/2004 12:22 PM
The iMac Tray-Load G4/466MHz upgrade from FastMac has a Motorola 450MHz G4 7400 processor running at 466MHz, an upgraded 1 MB backside cache, an AltiVec Velocity Engine and a 1 year limited (defect and workmanship) warranty. Though only beginning to sell its products under the FastMac name to consumers in 2003, the company has been creating and selling upgrade products for Macintosh computers since 1998. The upgraded machine was a Grape 333 MHz iMac with a recently upgraded 80 GB hard drive. Installing the FastMac processor upgrade is fairly straight-forward when following FastMac's provided instructions. After removing the cables it is advised that the computer be left for five minutes in order for the components to cool. Following the five minute wait, the next step was to remove the screws at the top of the logic board/mass storage chassis. That step was followed by disconnecting the audio, RGB, main power and IrDA cables, then removing the logic board/mass storage chassis. Later the processor card top shield was removed, then the heat sink clip and heat sink. The processor card was then removed from the logic board connectors by using the heatsink clip. An important piece of information to note when replacing the processor card is that it is important to firmly seat the processor in the logic board connectors, as the connectors are not located in the center of the board, pressure has to be applied in just the right spot for proper installation. If the processor card is not seated correctly (as I found out after putting all of the parts back together), the iMac will not boot. After the processor removal, the RAM was then transferred from the old card onto the new FastMac card, then the process was reversed. {_pic} The FastMac upgrade performed extremely well. After the processor upgrade, overall performance increased, with speeds nearly doubling that of the original processor. Booting Classic from OS X was about twice as fast, as well as ripping a song from CD, and exporting using Photoshop. Screen redraws were also faster and scrolling was quicker. The $199.95 upgrade might not be worth the price if there are any features offered in a new iMac or eMac that might catch your attention. To sell the old machine (for around $300) and then adding that amount to the money saved for not buying the processor upgrade ($199), would leave the purchaser with only spending an additional $300 to get a new 1.25 GHz eMac; a machine that is significantly better than the old iMac. eMac's offer the same all in one design of the 333 iMac but a new eMac would give an extra 2" of flat-CRT display area, a better resolution, faster processor, a combo drive, FireWire ports and a larger hard drive. Though the FastMac upgrade is an "incredible boost of speed and power, allowing you to enjoy the next generation of Macintosh products without burning a hole in your wallet," a small wallet hole might not be that bad if looking for a significantly better machine. For consumers who may not have the extra cash to spend on a new machine, the FastMac upgrade is a cost-effective way to upgrade a machine and is recommend if more processing power is needed.
