Fun with Flickr
Fun with Flickr
09/01/2004 08:42 PMAt the O'Reilly Emerging Technologies conference earlier this year I
was lucky enough to get a demo of
Flickr, the photo-sharing software
and service from
Ludicorp. (The
company's president, Stewart Butterfield, is married to
Caterina Fake, who did great
design work here at Salon several years ago.) At the time I thought
it was a neat little photo-sharing tool, but it seemed a little heavy
on the Flash, which sometimes makes my head ache, and life got busy
and I never got around to exploring it further. Since then Flickr has
won much acclaim, and when I needed to figure out a simple way to
share photos from a recent family trip, I thought I'd give it another
spin last night. Turns out it has evolved beautifully since my
introduction to it, and I ended up playing with it for hours, so let
me now belatedly add my enthusiasm to the chorus.
It's an exquisitely well designed Web application, certainly one of
the best I've ever seen, full of smart interface choices and nice
little finishing touches that let you know that the developers who've
built it are also heavy users of their own handiwork.
Tiny example: I noticed Flickr was dating the photos based on the
date I uploaded them, so I went in to change a bunch of dates to
reflect when the photos were taken. The page contained this helpful
message: "The date posted is the date & time you physically published
your photo on Flickr, not the date the photo was taken. We are
currently storing the date that your photo was taken in the database,
so rest assured you won't need to modify every photo later... There
will soon be a way to sort your photos based on the date the photo was
taken. Stay tuned!" So I didn't waste my time. That's what I call a
considerate piece of software. And along the way you learn that
Flickr is respectfully storing each photo's metadata (date, type of
camera used, all that EXIF stuff
that you almost never need to look at, except when you do).
It's easy to get started with Flickr, and then when you want to
push it and do more with it, it leads you gently into its depths. It
has a whole layer of social software -- profiles, groups, and so forth
-- but since its primary function is photo sharing, that social
software actually has a raison d'etre, so you don't just sit there (as
with so many other ventures in this area) and wonder "Now that we're
here and we know each other's hobbies and marital status, what exactly
do we do?"
I am generally distrustful of using Web applications as anything
more than conveniences for away-from-home access. I want my data close
at hand, and most Web interfaces are still too clunky to allow for
fast and complex organizing of serious quantities of stuff. But I'm
seriously thinking about making Flickr my photo home base -- it's that
good. And if Flickr's speedy evolution in a mere six months is any
indication, the thing is going to improve -- and grow -- at an intense
rate.

I think from now on - whenever there's a hot
new technology or service that I KNOW Seb is gonna pick up -
I'll wait for him to blog it. and then I'll just blog his post.
But what happens when Seb goes on vacation?
Anyway here's what he
has to say about this coolio new Flickr feature.

Great move, guys. Notice how photo sharing service Flickr is not in
the
business of blogging per se but keeps finding clever ways to ride
the
wave. Integrating pictures is a pain point for the many people who
struggle with file uploading, management, and markup. Flickr nicely
lowers the barrier to entry here. Of course this synergy could not
happen if the blogging solutions didn't provide APIs for
posting.

Today, Yahoo invited a handful of “influencers” to have
early access to their new product 360 degrees. Apparently, i’m

product and speak my mind. I have to say that i’m impressed that

New Flickr features
New Flickr features
04/29/2004 05:01 AMFlickr, the image-sharing social software app, has rolled out a bunch
of new features, including this one, which does very intuitive
group-based access-control to files:
Photostreams are a new way to share your photos on Flickr, on simple
webpages where you control who sees what. All the photos you upload
automatically go into your Photostream, but different viewers see
different images, depending on their relationship to you.
How does it work?
* As always, you can make photos public or private. You can also
restrict the viewing to people who you have tagged with a specific
relationship ("only show this to friends or better").
* Public photos appear to everyone viewing your Photostream, but
you can exclude any public photo if you'd like.
* You can also see the collected streams of your friends' photos at
http://flickr.com/photos/friends/, and the latest public photos on
Flickr at http://flickr.com/photos/.

EDGE PC Card
04/16/2004 01:12 PMBrian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree,
including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page
review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's
real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in
several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why
performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures
and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the
card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony
Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila!
You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a
month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people
who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best
option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its
1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should
have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....

Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,

06/28/2004 09:35 PM
It catches eyes, that's for
sure. I had forgotten to load the Sony VAIO U50 with any software
before our flight home to Kansas City for the weekend, but since an
unexpected storm front was blowing in from the north, we had almost
two hours to kill while our plane sat, stranded on the tarmac of
LaGuardia. Even scrolling through empty file systems was better than
the airline magazine.
"Excuse me," said the man sitting next to me, and I turned too fast
to respond, because I knew he had been staring. "What exactly
is that thing, and can you play Spider Solitaire on it?"

Sony's new Bluetooth headset the DR-BT1 is an odd-looking

isn't unattractive. Feature-wise, it has all the standard bits, and is

Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP Review
06/03/2004 10:20 AM
Trusted Reviews
absolutely gushes over the Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP, and really, how can
you blame them? The X505VP is Sony's super-slim ultra-portable, just
21mm at its thickest and 11mm at its thinnest ends. With a 1.1GHz
Pentium M, 512 MB RAM, a bundle of extra hardware including a
multi-format memory card reader, DVD burner, and carrying case, as
well as included (but not integrated) 802.11g, there's really not
questioning the fact that the X505 is one of the world's most
desirable laptops. If I had a spare $3,700 around that I hadn't
already allocated for eight balls, the wafer thin mint would already
be mine.

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review
07/12/2004 10:34 AM
I should warn you: I'm sort of
lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to
work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to
make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or
watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there
is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I
just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison
06/09/2004 09:10 AM
If you want to stumble through the Babelfish
translation, AV Watch Japan has a review of the Sony VAIO Pocket, the
hard disk-based music player that's getting the most buzz as Sony's
attempt to create an iPod-killer. Among other things, they compare
sizes (!), and really that battery nodule on the back of the VAIO
Pocket does it a disservice in pictures -- it's not nearly as big as
it seems. Of course, the chink in the VAIO Pocket's armor is its
inability to play any format but Sony's proprietary ATRAC3, meaning
every song you want to copy to the VAIO Pocket has to be converted.
20GB of conversion is going to be sucky, but manageable; it's really
just the principle of the thing (even Apple, head up their AAC, lets
the iPod play MP3).
