How much is a dime really worth?

How much is a dime really worth? 12/18/2003 03:35 PM
Wal-Mart has launched a test of its new online music service. It differs from other music services by undercutting the competitions price of 99 cents and offering its wares for a remarkable 88 cents. With some services failing to meet sales expectations and Apple publicly admitting it makes almost no money from sales at its iTunes Music Store, it remains to be seen whether Wal-Mart's lower-priced music service will remain viable as the market heats up.

Dream Dollars "Discover the mystery of Nadiria, the Lost Colony of Antarctica. Nadiria flourished as a utopian colony deep inside the Antarctican ice shelf for over thirty years until its mysterious disappearance in 1899. Here are the beautiful reproductions of its unusual currency, Dream-Dollars, studied by scholars and dream researchers for almost a century. Long unavailable, these exotic notes will amaze, astound, and fascinate all those interested in the strange and the beautiful."

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AM
Back in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville, the small (mostly deserted) California town was put up for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8 million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that the buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has been sold again - but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on eBay," contributing to the use of eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and sellers.

eBay: Not For Everyone

eBay: Not For Everyone 08/27/2004 03:36 PM
For as big a group of users as eBay has, still there are plenty of people who would just rather buy products at a fixed price. Of course, eBay does now have the "Buy it now" feature that solves exactly that issue, but that seems like a footnote to how eBay is supposed to work. The writer here notes that the whole eBay auction takes too much time. If she wants to buy something, she just wants to buy it. She doesn't want to bid. She doesn't want to check the auction, and she doesn't want to wait a few days to find out if she got the product. For the most part, I've had a similar experience. While I have bought two or three things off of eBay, overall, I've found better prices, reliability and service just by buying at fixed price stores (including eBay's fixed price division Half.com).

Have you ever wished you had started and owned Lindows instead of Michael Robertson? After all, the upstart Linux distribution first gained huge notoriety by pulling on the whiskers of the Microsoft monopoly, then by losing a few rounds in court as Gates and company went global court-shopping, but finally banking hundreds of millions of dollars to settle the suit Microsoft had filed against it here in the U.S. Well, whip out your credit card, because you can pick up L-I-N-D-O-W-S right now on eBay for a starting bid of just a couple hundred dollars. The original Lindows signage, that is.

CraigsList and eBay 08/13/2004 04:21 PM
eBay's bought 25% of CraigsList.org. Craig blogs about it here, and set up a forum to talk about it here. I love CraigsList both as a service that I use and as an example of what's so damn right with the Web. And I have complete faith in Craig Newmark as someone who has put years of labor on the line to build a place that benefits the community. I have slightly mixed feelings about eBay. It, too, is a service I use all the time, and they've innovated in some really useful ways, especially with regard to reputation systems....
