Cygwin: Still Awesome
09/08/2004 10:51 AMI opined a few months ago on the beauty and joy of the command
line, but I had another experience today that really illustrated the
fact that GUI’s aren’t the best tool for everything.
I have both the privilege and burden of dealing with Rational
Clearcase for some version control tasks. I recently wrote a large
module with a number of new files, and it was time to add it to source
control. Clearcase’s GUI has no ‘recursively add all these
files’ function, which is one of the many ways in which it
strives to suck, and succeeds beyond expectations.
Fortunately, I’ve got Cygwin on my Windows box. First up:
get a list of files to check in. I want only my module, and not any of
the Frontpage crap that Visual Studio adds to web projects. So, I need
a list of all the files in the project, then get rid of any of them
that are not in my module’s folder, then get rid of any
directories that start with an underscore (the frontpage crap), then
save that list to a file.
find . | grep /MyModule | sed /\/_[a-z]/d >
list.txt
(Yes, there are plenty of more efficient ways to write this, but it
was the first way that came to mind, and it works.)
Now I need to take each of those items and check it in to ClearCase
one by one. (Clearcase has an import commandline command that would
take them all at once, but I don’t have permission to run it in
my environment). No sweat with bash.
for file in `cat list.txt`; do cleartool mkelem $file;
done
Awesome. Two commands instead of an hour’s worth of clicking,
saving me so much time that I waste it on things like posting to blogs
while I wait for the checkin to finish.
You need Cygwin if you are a serious power user of any
kind. Learning it will not only make you faster, it will make you more
platform independent. Almost all non-Windows platforms that you run
across use some variation of this syntax.

Epson's World's Lightest Flyer Still

08/19/2004 07:35 AM
See, I saw that
Epson had released a new model of their "World's Lightest Micro-Flying
Robot" - you know, the one that was a big deal late last year - and
thought, "We've already talked about that. Nobody will be interested."
I was wrong, according to the emails, though, so I guess I better
mention it. The biggest difference between the old model and the new
one is that the update appears to be running untethered, although it
still flies with a bit of a wobble. It's too small to be used outside,
but I wouldn't be surprised to see some implementation of these
available for purchase soon. Although they have serious uses, too -
investigating accident scenes, etc. - with the Bluetooth and built-in
camera, it would make a perfect office toy, until you were fired for
industrial espionage.
Also, could the girl in the video be any less excited?

(Verdict: Awesome)

Wetpixel has a review of both
the Nikon D2X 12.4 MP camera and its Subal ND2 underwater housing. The
pictures produced by the camera are vibrant and incredibly
well-balanced, which you would expect for the $5,000 it costs. Still,
reviewer Dr. Alex Mustard says that if you don't need very large
output sizes for your shots, you can purchase a Nikon D70 for
considerably less that produces rather decent underwater shots. The
housing is designed very well and offers excellent ergonomics—an
important consideration when on a dive. Dr. Mustard muses "It costs
$5,000. And if you fill it up with water, it is worth $0," but goes on
to say "in a word, [the D2X] is awesome." Some gorgeous pics accompany
the review, so be sure to check them out. (Thanks, Eric!)

The
Sharp Zaurus may no longer be with us, but that might not be all bad,
since the hack-ready Archos PMA 430 is getting very decent reviews.
It's a portable video device first like the AV420 before, but adding
in a touch-screen interface and the same Qtopia Linux-based
environment of the Zaurus. That means it's effectively a PDA with a
30GB hard drive with Wi-Fi and USB Host capability. If that doesn't
give you some ideas, then I don't know what does.
The downside? Archos wants $800 for all that power, so you'd almost
be better off buying a cheap, ultra-portable laptop.

Continuous Integration
09/10/2004 12:51 PMWe’ve started using Continuous Integration testing on a
project I’m working on. Had you asked me yesterday, when I was
setting the #@$! thing up for my project, I wouldn’t have had
much nice to say about it. But now, whenever I merge my code up to the
integration branch, I get an email saying if the code compiled
successfully and passed unit testing. Since you can merge up changes a
little at a time (once you get your ‘big merge’ out of the
way), you can find out really quickly if you broke anything.
The system we’re using is CruiseControl.Net, which is
pretty easy to work with (despite my problems). Their web site appears
to be down at the moment, but here’s an article describing how these
systems operate.
Since they utilize Nant,
a .Net port of the Ant build system, you can have the integration
system do almost anything you can imagine. You could have it compile
all the code, run unit tests, deploy it to integration, build
documentation, and make a deployment package that can be used if the
build is deemed road-worthy. Mike Clark suggests wiring Lava
Lamps up to indicate the result of the last build. Perhaps we’ll
program an Aibo to go
and bite whoever checks in bad code…

Better CVS integration for Netbeans on

06/17/2005 04:52 PM
Preview version of the new NetBeans CVS Support now available!:
The NetBeans team is proud to announce a preview (alpha) version of
the new redesigned CVS support, an innovative approach to integration
of a Version Control System (VCS) into the NetBeans Integrated
Development Environment (IDE). The new module provides a simple,
efficient IDE versioning workflow and intelligent support for common
versioning operations.
The module is not derived from the current NetBeans VCS support, but
instead is meant as a lightweight approach with less focus on
architectural abstraction and much more attention to User Interface
(UI) functionality.
CVS integration is the one thing that keeps pulling me back to
Eclipse, so I'm really glad to hear the VCS subsystem is being
re-worked (maybe 'replaced' is more accurate).
Check out the

looks like good stuff.

Hinges and integration
Hinges and integration
01/07/2004 06:07 PMAt the end of the XIX century, a screw company called Stanley
started selling hinges, and quickly became the largest hinge maker in
the market.
Their hinges were almost the same as any other, the hinges were a
mature technology, they had no price advantage, no hinge-making
experience, and no manufacturing difference with the competition.
How did they do it? They packaged the screws along with the hinges.
Since anyone who bought a hinge needed the screws anyway, they sold
more product, and the buyer was happy because he didn´t need to
find matching screws.
There´s an obvious lesson there: If the consumer always needs two
products at the same time, they are not two products, they are one,
and selling them together should make sense.
How can we apply that (now) obvious lesson to software development,
and open development in particular?
-- Roberto Alsina
Interesting analogy, but I cannot help but suspect that the screws and
hinges that Stanley made probably worked better together because they
came from one source. Just like software from Microsoft is tightly
integrated with the operating system and Microsoft Office. Or Apple's
software is tied to their hardware.
However, Roberto has a good point. Given a base library of sufficient
power and flexibility, people will not reinvent the wheel, but promote
interoperatibility by sharing a common code base. This is something
that PHP still needs to work on. There aren't any accepted standards
for so many issues. For example, PEAR is so fruitful that it provides
us with multiple templating engines and database abstraction
libraries. Too fruitful perhaps?
