Open source hides secret data 06/22/2005 02:10 AM
The art of hiding information from anyone except from the intended receiver has been used for many centuries. Hiding information by embedding it in other, seemingly innocuous information is known as steganography, a word that means "covered writing" in Greek. Today, steganography applications can hide one file within another on a computer. Steganography applications are available on many different platforms, including Windows, Linux, and *BSD.

Terror in Open Societies

Terror in Open Societies 04/11/2004 01:19 PM

The August 6, 2001 memo to President Bush offers tantalyzing suggestions of what happened the next month, but it's not evidence of sheer nonfeasance that the critics are suggesting, either. It still seems unlikely that, short of extraordinary luck, we could have prevented the attacks -- or something equally fierce at some later date. We have to get used to the fact that there will be more terrorism on our soil, probably sooner than later, and that it will be horrible stuff. If we want to have a remotely open society, we can't protect everything and everyone. Which makes U.S. stance around the world all the more strange. Unless we intend to turn the globe into a U.S.-controlled dictatorship, our methods -- which are creating vast new hatred against us -- are plainly counterproductive. We've squandered the powerful goodwill that 9/11 gave us.

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...
