Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PMUSA Today is claiming that the
rules have changed for resumes, now that they're
mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get
into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us
learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results
from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make
it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant
terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to
make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover
letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and
don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so
much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they
don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as
the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the
biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you
spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time
when people were told to send out
fewer resumes? If anything,
it seems like this strategy is the
wrong strategy in the
digital age where HR folks are
so
inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to
paper
resumes is much more effective in getting attention.
How Dotster cost me days and days of
downtime: stay away from this registrar
How Dotster cost me days and days of
downtime: stay away from this registrar
08/12/2004 07:36 AMA year ago, the DNS for craphound.com disappeared. Which was weird,
because I was paying for DNS with Dotster, my registrar.
I called them up and spoke to their tech support people. "Oh yeah,"
they said, "your paid service ended a month ago but our billing system
was broken so we didn't send out a notice. So we terminated you for
nonpayment. But dude, you're lucky! We gave you a free month's DNS!"
Lucky lucky me. I got a free month's DNS and to pay for it, I was
bouncing mail all over the Internet and my Website wasn't resolving.
Bastards. I bought two years' worth of DNS and vowed that when the
domain came up for renewal, I'd switch away from Dotster. I sent them
an email telling them as much and got an email back apologizing and
saying that they would certainly never terminate my DNS wihtout notice
again (you see where this is going, I trust)
Craphound.com is up for renewal at the end of August. Not wanting to
leave things to the last minute, I changed over early this month,
switching registrars to Domain
Direct, who are now the registrar for all of my domains, and
boingboing.net besides.
I didn't move over the DNS -- I figured I'd paid Dotster for another
year's service, I might as well get it. Instead, I left myself a
reminder in my iCal for next July to set up DNS at DomainDirect a
month ahead of the service running out on Dotster.
This morning, Dotster terminated my DNS. Without warning. And when I
called, they told me there was nothing they could do about it. Even
though there's nothing in my DNS contract that says that DNS is
provided to domains registered with Dotster and no others, that is,
apparently, their policy. And they can't make exceptions. Not even for
48h while I effect a graceful change to DomainDirect (who have been
fantastic throughout and now have 100 percent of my domain
registration and DNS business).
Bastards.

Because You Just Can't Get Enough
ComAir...
12/30/2004 11:43 AMThe Cincinnati Post has an interes
ting article up on how ComAir became so badly screwed during the
holidays.
The SBS Crew Check system tracks all the details of where each
crew member is scheduled and keeps a log of every scheduling
change.
Tom Carter, a computer consultant with Clover Link Systems of Los
Angeles, said the application has a hard limit of 32,000 changes in a
single month.
"This probably seemed like plenty to the designers, but when the
storms hit last week, they caused many, many crew reassignments, and
the value of 32,000 was exceeded," he said.
Important lesson to programmers: using larger variables costs more
memory. Memory is cheap. Downed airlines cost millions.

The Comair Mess Revisited
12/28/2004 05:13 PMAirlines' computer systems questioned: In the wake of
the big Comair systems meltdown over the holdays, CNN
has an article about why airline's systems are so rickety. It's
notable for a quote from uber-security expert Bruce Schneier that
tells the naked truth of it.
Bruce Schneier, a computer security expert in Mountain View,
California, said the issue boils down to cost versus benefit.
Airlines could upgrade existing computers to handle more
transactions, install sophisticated backup systems that come on when
the primary system fails or buy high-performance software that is used
by NASA, nuclear plants and medical facilities to keep critical
systems running at all times, Schneier said.
"It's certainly feasible, but it's my guess it's not economic,"
Schneier said. "My guess is it is cheaper for the airline to absorb
this loss, which doesn't happen often, than to fix the problem.
Isn't that the truth? Absorb the damage, move on, and wait for it
to happen again. Nice. Who gets to miss Christmas next year?

12/25/2004 09:44 PMThousands of travelers cope with holiday headaches: Tens of
thousands of people spent Christmas in an airport today because of a
system malfunction.
The computer system Comair uses to book pilots for flights broke
down, he said.
Comair could not pinpoint a reason for the computer crash and could
not say why there was no backup system.
I predict that there's going to be some IT guy out of a job when
this is done. Additionally, if this is proven to be the work of a
hacker or a bug, the press time devoted to it will be something to
behold.
