USGS National Map Viewer 12/25/2003 12:48 AM
If Mapquest just isn't cutting the mustard, or you feel compelled over the holidays to take your geekery to new and mysterious depths, the National Map Viewer from the U.S. Geological Survey is your new best friend. The dynamic interface lets you layer roads, topos, and satellite imagery on top of one another at your whim. And if you're really hardcore, make your own app by downloading and mining the Census Bureau's TIGE R database.
Note: Map viewer and interface may not be friendly to all browsers; this is a common limitation of government websites.

Can Email Be Saved?

Can Email Be Saved? 04/16/2004 06:32 PM
Infoworld went out and asked six "experts" if they were starting from scratch how they would build an email system to prevent spam - and the answers aren't anything new. They tend to fall into three categories: identify/authenticate users, shift certain functions away from email or sue, sue, sue. Of course, people are trying all these things already and so far... still plenty of spam. Also, in the intro to the article, it says that they asked an "unrepentant spammer" for his take on how to stop spam - but whoever it is, his response doesn't appear in the article. I searched around the InfoWorld site and I can't find it at all. In fact, I hadn't realized just how confusing the InfoWorld site is until now. It's pretty much impossible to find stuff unless something from the outside points you directly in to an article. Perhaps before they save email, they should save their own site. Anyway, if anyone can find the spammer's take, please let us know via the comments so I can adjust this post.

How Linux Saved Microsoft

How Linux Saved Microsoft 04/19/2005 03:45 AM
I've been looking back this week and recalling almost a decade ago when a little company called Netscape prematurely slapped Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) upside the head and by so doing better positioned Microsoft for the future. Granted, I'm sure Microsoft would have loved to avoid the related litigation that continues to this day, but were it not for Netscape, Microsoft would have missed the Internet badly and would have had some much tougher years then they did. As I look at how Microsoft is changing to address the Linux threat, one that may actually turn out to be no more real then Netscape's was, I can't help but see how Microsoft has dramatically benefited from it -- and much more broadly so than they did from the rise of Netscape.

Knoppix Saved My Dad's Data 11/10/2003 11:39 PM
Even before today, I couldn't say enough good things about Knoppix, the coolest run-from-CD Linux Distribution ever. But it gets better. When I got home from flying this evening, there were two messages on my answering machine. Both were my Dad telling me that his work laptop was fubar. He wanted to find a way to backup the data to his Linux box (one that I setup for him as a home server last year--that he doesn't know much about)....
