My fellow Americans, in our name our government is torturing people scooped up indiscriminately — some were turned in for a bounty, not much of a guarantee of guilt. You and I are chaining them into a fetal position for 24 hours or more without food or water, letting them shit themselves. You and I are threatening people with vicious dogs. You and I are letting them roast in unventilated cells. And then there's this: "I saw another detainee sitting on the floor of the interview room with an Israeli flag draped around him, loud music being played, and a...

What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do?

What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do? 01/06/2004 01:11 PM
What a strange world we live in these days, where companies are afraid to actually deal with spyware/adware companies because they somehow have the air of "legitimacy". It's your computer, and you should be free to ditch any crap that has been installed without your knowledge and explicit consent. However, as we've pointed out in the past, companies like Dell have decided that, in order not to piss off these so-called marketers (which is not the right term for them), they won't help you get spyware off of your computer, even if that's what's causing it to slow down. Now, Broadband Reports is pointing out that, for similar reasons, big ISPs like Earthlink and AOL are offering anti-spyware products that don't actually remove the spyware. They just tell you that you have spyware on your computer, and leave it up to you to figure out how to remove it. It's certainly better than ignoring the problem completely, but it really doesn't go that far. Of course, they're probably trying to avoid lawsuit s from companies that are called spyware, but which insist they are "legitimate" - despite the fact that there's plenty of evidence most people don't install it on purpose.

Researchers at the University of Calgary have built a tele-operated fingerprinting system for bomb disposal robots. Typically, the only way to grab prints from an explosive device after a 'bot blows it up is to search through the detritus. The new system sprays a jet of superglue fumes at the supsicious package. According to a New Scientist article, "the superglue vapour reacts with the organic fingerprint deposits to form a conspicuous white polymer" that can be photographed using the remote camera before the bomb, and often the robot, are blown to bits. Recording industry to demand
fingerprints of music listeners
06/05/2004 04:32 PM
Isn't the recording industry silly for trying this? I'm glad it's wasting its time on this fool's errand. I hope Veritouch gets millions from the RIAA for this rotten idea, which has a zero percent chance of catching on.
The RIAA is hoping that a new breed of music player which requires biometric authentication will put an end to file sharing. Established biometric vendor Veritouch has teamed up with Swedish design company to produce iVue: a wireless media player that allows content producers to lock down media files with biometric security. This week Veritouch announced that it had demonstrated the device to the RIAA and MPAA.

The Smoking Gun

The Smoking Gun 03/13/2003 10:25 AM
Remember that whole drone "cover-up"? Here's the plane. The prototype of Iraq's smoking gun WMD threat. Constructed of balsa wood and duct tape, it says Allahu Akbar (God is great) on the side. And, well, they were probably half right. While it's not really a gun, it probably does smoke -- it uses lawn-mower-style two-stroke engines. Washington Post story here.

Not Smoking...Again

Not Smoking...Again 03/23/2005 12:34 PM

Starting this morning, I am not smoking.  Instead, I am doing the niccotine lozenge called Commit.  The candy looks like a small alka seltzer tablet and, as expected, tastes chaulky and tingles as it dissolves.  It's less convenient than niccotine gums because I am not suppose to use it within 15 minutes after eating or drinking.  So no more mixing niccotine with coffee or full stomach for me.

I have no idea whether this will work.  Longest smokeless run for me was six months.  We'll see.  Hopefully, lozenge won't bring vivid dreams like patches did.

Please don't wish me luck.  I can't smoke luck.

Smoking gun

Smoking gun 08/03/2004 04:31 PM
The NY Times reported today on the front page that the information about the planned attack on financial buildings in NY and Newark is 3-4 years old. That is, it's information we may have had even before 9/11.The indications that there will be an attack before the elections does not point to the information about those four buildings. So why is it being trotted out now? I, of course, have my suspicions, almost all of which end with the phrase "grounds for impeachment."...
