Clueless in Berkeley
Clueless in Berkeley
07/12/2004 04:07 PMI have written before of my love for my favorite feature in the
Berkeley Daily Planet, the Police Blotter. Today while reading it, I
ran across this absolute gem which caused me to lose a mouthful of hot
Peet's coffee in front of the Cheeseboard. Knife-Wielder Earns
Cellular Domicile A 48-year-old Berkeley man found himself with a new
and tightly confined residence after police busted him for flashing a
knife at a fellow citizen near the corner of Center Street and Martin
Luther King Jr. Way at 9:37 a.m. Friday. The felon seems to have
overlooked that building on the corner and all those blue-clad
badge-wearing folks who pass through its portals en route to their
black-and-white cars. (For those of you unfamiliar with Berkeley
geography, our new police headquarters is at the corner of MLK and
Center.) How do you get a job writing stuff like this? I want one. It
made my day....

02/10/2004 03:56 PM I have an account at Imperial Capital Bank (yes, I know – there are
countless jokes to be made of that name). I have it mostly because
their interest rate on their checking account is quite good (1.92%,
for now ...). Actually, that's the only reason I have an account
there. Anyway, I have a check for some GBP laying around, so I called
them to find out what they'd charge and which exchange rate they'd use

07/19/2004 09:54 AM In Wired's July issue, Contributing writer Cory Doctorow writes
about the movie I, Robot, in a slam at the late Dr. Isaac Asimov

who had actually read more than two or three Asimov short stories.
There is a lot in this article that is debatable but presented as
concrete fact, and other "facts" which are downright false.

Clueless Article About Canada's Wi-Fi
Scene
02/16/2004 01:25 PMThis writer seems to enjoy writing as though he's an authority when
it's clear he's not: He's read all the hype about Wi-Fi but gets
enough wrong that he obviously hasn't done his own research. His
general point is that Canada is behind the United States in deploying
hotspots. But he hasn't got very good research to back that up. His
strongest piece of evidence seems to be a conversation he had recently
with one computer programmer who had never heard of Wi-Fi. He goes on
to say that the market is primed to change dramatically because
Canada's largest carriers said they'd create a unified standard to let
customers roam between their networks. This so-called standard was
developed without any of the major existing Canadian Wi-Fi operators,
such as FatPort, and none of the four carriers involved had deployed
hotspots when they set the roaming standard. It's also just a
"standard" (how they'll handle billing, etc.), not a roaming deal. So
the carriers could deploy networks and still not roam. (Meanwhile,
FatPort has built hundreds of locations and secured roaming with
several international networks.) He also pointed to a recent study
that said no hotspots' business model could succeed if the only
revenue source was connection fees. That study is bad news for cafes
in the U.S., he says, because many of them offer access for free. But
the two aren't related. Free hotspot operators have a totally
different business model than those that charge. He closes by pointing
out "guerilla Wi-Fi warriors" in Canada who warchalk. Warchalking is a
great idea and testament to the community behind Wi-Fi, but who has
actually seen a symbol? If this writer's point is that Wi-Fi hasn't
taken off in Canada, then it's doubtful that people there are actually
warchalking....

First UK Phishing Arrest - Catching
Clueless Kids Instead Of Real Criminals
04/29/2004 11:56 AMOver in the UK the police are especially happy after they've tracked
down and
arrested someone
for running a phishing scam. They say this is the first UK arrest
for phishing. However, like a
similar
case in the US, it sounds like this was just one individual who
wasn't particularly sophisticated in running a phishing scam. Most
such scams are run by organized crime groups - but, so far, no one has
been able to track them down. So, while it's good that we're catching
some people, it's unlikely to do very much to slow down most of these
scams.

Xeni Jardin:
Stephen Holden of the
NY Times reviews
Sky Captain and the World of
Tomorrow, which opens this weekend nationwide.
If nothing else, "Sky Captain" is a landmark in computer-generated
imagery. Its actors cavort through an entirely synthetic, computerized
retro-styled future world that fuses Art Deco, Futurism, Fritz Lang's
"Metropolis" and the spirit of the 1939 World's Fair into an
all-purpose eve-of-World-War-II environment extrapolated into a
science fiction limbo. Its cheerfully ominous scenario of a planet
invaded by robots that systematically set about stripping the earth of
its natural resources resonates in any number of ways without seeming
strident or promoting a political agenda.
But the visual elegance of the movie, which opens today nationwide,
comes at a price. If its ethereal evocation of a pulp fiction
future-past eclipses almost any other sci-fi franchise in subtlety and
imagination, its shadowy washed-out color is a far cry from the robust
hues of a movie like "Raiders of the Lost Ark." The monochromatic
variations on sepia keep the actors and their adventures at a refined
aesthetic distance, and the bleached, tinted face of Mr. Law is simply
not as real a screen presence as the ruddy, flesh-and-blood Harrison
Ford. At times the film is hard to see. And as the action accelerates,
the wonder of its visual concept starts giving way to sci-fi
cliches.

anonymous author who chose the nom de plume of Captain Ledford. This
author serialized a set of stories in the K5 diary section that remain
to this date as some of the best fiction K5 has ever seen. With the
advent of the K5 fiction section I thought it would be befitting to
bring back to the foreground these stories, so that they could be seen
by the wider K5 audience. I am not Captain Ledford, nor was I able to
get in touch with him or her. But I am a big fan.
