Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

It seeks especially to address those deep levels at which we half-consciously shape technology and are shaped by it. What is half-conscious can, after all, be made fully conscious, and we can take responsibility for it..... Can we take responsibility for technology, or must we sleepwalk in submission to its inevitabilities?"

Spyware you do not want to get for

Spyware you do not want to get for
Christmas!
12/22/2004 01:44 AM

As I was installing my Creative Labs PCMCIA sound card, I was shocked to see the amount of "GARBAGE" creative labs tried to install or place in my bookmarks on my PC. Luckily my Spyware program caught all of it and I was able to have it removed before it could become a issue.

Why would Creative do this. The items they were loading wasn't spyware but I sure did not ask for the bookmarks to various sites including AOL to be loaded. They should be ashamed of themselves and offer a apology to all Creative Sound Card owners. That card was not cheap and then they try to load my PC up with advertisments. Well I like the card but they need to be put on the who's naughty list.

Ziff Davis has a great article about some real nasty Spyware that you will want to avoid. Don't forget to included Virus Software, Firewall Software and Spyware Software with all of those PC's your giving or getting for Christmas. [ZDN et]

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the site, Not a poster was stirring, not even to fight; Ante and Don were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that Spymac 3 would soon be there; The members were nestled all snug in their beds While visions of new features danced in their heads; And Kristie in her 'kerchief and Atari in cap, Had just settled down for a long winters nap.

Too many Christmas lights?

Too many Christmas lights? 12/10/2003 07:56 PM
Is there such a thing as too many Christmas lights? I love seeing lavish displays of lights at Christmas time. Some folks like a few old-fashioned Christmas lights and some like to deck the halls in a blaze of glory (this one boasts 700,000 lights). And how much does it cost to run a fabulous display?

I wish you a Merry Christmas...

I wish you a Merry Christmas... 12/24/2004 01:02 PM

You know what drives me mad? "Happy Christmas". It's been driving me a bit nuts for a while now. Surely it's "Merry Christmas"? Cos otherwise how can you say, "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year"? Google agrees with me: Merry Christmas (661,000 results) vs. Happy Christmas (183,000 results). So stop it, advertising wankers. Stop it TV people. Stop it, annoying card makers. Merry is better. It means drunk.

Anyway, I'm off to see the family today, so I would imagine posting will be even more sporadic than normal over the next week or so. I hope you all have a good time visiting family and stuff. I'll be back online properly in a few scant days, no doubt busting at the seams with enthusiasm and turkey and ideas and vim. In the meantime, if you want to do something good in the world, why not donate to Oxfam US, Oxfam UK or to Stonewall. And if that's all a bit worthy for you and you've enjoyed the guff I've pumped out over the last hundred years, then why not buy me a present or something. Best wishes... xx Tom
