XM to Start Internet Radio Service
XM to Start Internet Radio Service
09/16/2004 09:09 AM
XM Radio has announced their intention to market their
own internet radio station, rebroadcasting (or simulcasting, I guess)
the 200+ channels of music that XM subscribers now receive for $8 a
month (or $4 if you already get the satellite service). Their
intention to launch their own internet radio station clarifies their
highly-antagonistic attitude towards the time-shifting software
TimeTrax, as well as their decision to remove the USB-enabled version
of their radio from the market.

service with XM Satellite Radio in a move that may help XM win
customers from AOL's 24 million subscribers, driving XM shares higher.
The service, which will offer about 200 channels streamed over the Web
in CD-quality sound for a monthly fee, will combine existing stations
from both partners and will begin to roll out this summer. The
service, which will cost an estimated $5 a month, will be available

The End of Broadband Service
The End of Broadband Service
03/22/2005 03:33 PMThe FCC reached a decision this week that could effectively end broadband service as we know
it. The order hasn't officially come out yet, but the result was
leaked.
The FCC granted a petition by BellSouth to pre-empt state
regulators from requiring "naked DSL." The procedural aspects are
convoluted, so the effect of that action may not be clear. Here's
what the FCC is saying. The local phone companies (and, although the
ruling doesn't specifically cover them, cable companies) are free to
force customers to buy pay for phone service in order to get
broadband. Whether or not you use the phone company's voice service
is immaterial -- you have to pay for it. Although there are a few
telcos willing to sell DSL as a stand-alone service (notably Qwest),
one wonders if they will continue to do so.
The FCC ruling makes broadband an extension of phone service,
rather than the reverse. It ties the data applications of the future
to the anchor of the public switched telephone network. That's
perverse. Voice is the application, not connectivity. We'll never
have real competition if the incumbents get paid even when customers
want to switch to a competitor.
I want to pay someone for high-speed data connectivity, with the
opportunity to use (and pay for) innovative applicaitons on top of
that pipe. To me, that's broadband service. After the FCC decision,
that may no longer be available. That's what I mean by the end of
broadband as we know it. For the privilege of buying broadband, I'll
have to buy phone service or something else I don't need, raising the
effective price. This is the way to promote broadband adoption in the
US?

Nevermind broadband -- many First
Americans don't have phone service
04/10/2004 01:59 PMComments from an NPR listener who heard
a segment I
did for "Day to Day" on the president's promise to make broadband
accessible to all Americans by the year 2007. Eric Martin says:
Phone penetration on reservations just passed the 50% mark within this
decade and even where there are phone lines on US reservations a lot
of them are old copper lines that can't handle dial-up. So before Bush
goes and gets the rest of the country hooked up with high speed, he
should make sure that all Americans, including Native Americans, have
basic phone service. John Edwards wasn't lying when he was talking
about two Americas.
There are some interesting stats on the lack of phone penetration in
"Indian Country" on
this FCC website.
