Since When Did Hollywood Get To Control
Our Mobile Phones?

Since When Did Hollywood Get To Control
Our Mobile Phones?
03/28/2005 06:00 AM
Someone over at Verizon Wireless seems very confused about who the company's customers are. Of course, it's unfair to pick on just them, since almost all of the mobile carriers are thinking the same way, but it was the VP at Verizon Wireless who made a series of bizarre, short-sighted and flat-out wrong comments to the Associated Press that should have him looking for a new line of work. The AP piece starts out as a rehash of last week's story saying that the carriers have forced Motorola to shelve the iTunes phone for the time being. Then it shifts the story over to Verizon Wireless' decision to cripple Bluetooth on its phones to stop people from transferring content directly from their phones to PCs (or other phones) and require them to use their cellular connection (which, oh yeah, costs money). Verizon Wireless tries to defend the practice by claiming the entertainment industry made them do it. The quote comes from Jim Straight, vice president for wireless data and Internet services at Verizon Wireless, saying: "When it comes to the cell phone I have to abide by the rules of the content houses." No, actually, he doesn't. The content houses don't own the carriers. There's simply no reason why the makers of a communications platform should be crippling their devices to protect an obsolete broadcast business model. People are not buying mobile phones to get the latest Disney movie or hit song. They're buying them to communicate. If the big content companies don't want to play, it's their loss. People will continue to buy up mobile phones and communicate with them. No one's dying to have access to broadcast content on their phones. The content industry shouldn't be setting the rules here, and there's no reason why the carriers should be deferring to them.

Mobile Phone Birth Control

Mobile Phone Birth Control 03/06/2004 02:05 AM
Missed this one when it first came out, but thanks to Charles W. for submitting this bit of satire, poking fun at the trend these days to build all sorts of extra add-ons to mobile phones. While the writer comes up with a bunch, the main focus of the article is mobile phone birth control, which is described as working by projecting "a high-intensity ultra-sonic electromagnetic "sound cone" that is inaudible to the human ear but fatal to any sperm cell within a range of six meters." Even better, the user doesn't have to do anything, as it will work automatically at the necessary moment: "You don't need to even turn it on. It's voice-activated. You place it near the bed, or any other site of amorous activity. You can even hang the mobile phone around one partner's neck. Then, as soon as someone yells, 'Oh, God! Oh, God!' — or anything like it — the Nippit sound cone activates, sending out deadly waves of spermicidal ultra-sonic electromagnetism. Any sperm that shows its little head is a goner before he can finish his first wiggle." Of course, like all contraceptives, it's not foolproof: "if an incoming phone call arrives at the "moment of truth," diverting the handset's attention, a pregnancy could result." A bit of Friday evening satire to send you off into the weekend...

Salling Clicker turns your mobile phone

Justin Reid of TheFeature has good things to say about a neat-sounding application called Salling Clicker that turns a Bluetooth device into a remote control for your Mac.
One of the really amazing features is that you can see not just ordinary information about the track you've got currently playing in iTunes - artist and song name, track length, etc. - but also the album art, directly on your mobile device.

Home fashions for total perverts

Home fashions for total perverts 11/18/2003 11:20 PM
Spotted in Hint Magazine:

"In a kinky convergence of couture and coitus, the London-based artist-designer duo of Basso & Brooke -- self-proclaimed 'enthusiasts of luxury, pomposity and irony' -- produce the most perverted fashion and items for the home we've ever seen. These include hot pads and tea towels illustrated with penises, eye masks quilted with illustrations of genitalia and picnic blankets splattered with ejaculation images. Our fave is a men's velvet v-neck sweater ($400), featuring drawings of high-heel shoes where the points are replaced with spouting male members in what has to be the ultimate in self-pleasure. Sadly, the heels are too good to be true, but the pullover exists and is available for sale at the website, along with an orgy scene of other goodies."

It's co-edited by fellow O'Reilly Author (okay, that sounds too cool!) Alan Graham, and Bonnie Burton.

Policies that kill?

Policies that kill? 12/02/2003 01:10 AM
Starting with this year's State of the Union address, President Bush began a plan to increase aid to Africa, and at the center of that plan is funding to prevent the spread of AIDS and HIV that has reached epidemic proportions on the continent. Critics however, have noted that aid to clinics comes with strings attached. Abstinence is preached first and foremost and condoms are mentioned only as a last resort. This reporter flat out says the policy to curtail the funding and use of condoms in Africa is killing millions.
