We've all been there — quickly trying to transfer those important files from your external hard drive, checking the clock, and unplugging the hard drive as soon as the file is finished copying. The words may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but the message is clear: You failed to properly eject your Firewire disk. Of course, these things happen, and generally, little or no data is corrupted during the blunder. But I've seen friends lose irreplaceable data by failing to press eject, and it seems time that someone does something about it. A recent <A HREF="http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2 =HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.html&r=1&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=PG01& S1=apple.AS.&OS=an/(apple)&RS=AN/apple">filing</A> with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office seems to allude that someone at Apple has had the same frustrations. On Sept. 9, the company submitted an application for a "HOT UNPLUGGABLE MEDIA STORAGE DEVICE," a peripheral device that can be automatically prepared for removal in the event that its user removes (unplugs) it from its host computer." <I>Broadly speaking, the invention relates to improved techniques for rendering a peripheral device removable (e.g., unpluggable). According to one aspect of the invention, the peripheral device is rendered removable from a host computer without preparatory user actions. In effect, the peripheral device can be automatically prepared for removal in the event that its user removes (unplugs) it from its host computer. According to another aspect of the invention, the peripheral device includes a data storage device that is mounted to a file system of the host computer when the host computer desires access to the data storage device. Otherwise, the data storage device is normally unmounted so that if the peripheral device were to be removed (e.g., unplugged) no harm or damage to data stored therein would occur. These aspects of the invention can be utilized alone or in combination with one another. The invention is particularly well suited for peripheral devices that are media players which are resulting "hot" unpluggable without detrimental consequences.</I> Its a little step, sure, but a giant one for us forgettable file swappers.

09/27/2004 03:30 AM
Richard C. Jaworski announces that the US Patent Office has granted his Petition to Make Special on his System of Testing the Upstream Cable Modem Channel (TUCMC) patent application. The petition to the US Patent Office alleged infringement of his technology by Acterna Corporation in their DSAM 2500 Cable Modem Test Instrument. Mr. Jaworski has written evidence that Acterna knew of the patent and the technology prior to releasing the feature in the DSAM 2500. According to patent law, triple damages are applicable for prior knowledge infringement as soon as the patent issues. Due to its special status, Jaworski expects the patent to issue in the immediate future. [PRWEB Sep 27, 2004]

iRATE Radio Application reads MP3 files
to identify CC licensed songs

iRATE Radio Application reads MP3 files
to identify CC licensed songs
02/10/2004 02:41 AM

iRATE Radio, an open-source application that sends users free-legal MP3s through its radio client, is now able to read the ID3 tags of MP3 files to identify Creative Commons license information. Enabling this kind of feature is exactly why Creative Commons put forth its MP3 embedding strategy many months ago, which defines a standard way to embed Creative Commons metadata in the ID3 tag of an MP3. Our hope was that file-sharing networks, and applications like iRATE, would read the ID3 tags, and tell users if there was a Creative Commons license attached. This way, users could feel assured to trade these MP3s online, or even make remixes of them. Check out some screenshots of the CC enabled iRATE Radio application.

iRATE has yet to enable the second part of our MP3 strategy, where MP3s are validated through an automatic web page verification process. (Validation can be done manually, though). This step is important because it prevents people from making fraudulent license claims about the MP3s.

Beyond being able to read ID3 tags, iRATE Radio has a catalogue of over 46,000 MP3s it can send you. It's also really smart in that it enables users to rate songs and then sends you more songs based on your ratings and preferences. We hope that more applications follow the lead of iRATE!
