Aggregator inside aggregator

Aggregator inside aggregator 09/21/2004 10:57 PM
You know whenever people post screenshots of emulators, how it can be weird to see Windows running on a Mac? (Even weirder if you actually use an emulator, until you get used to it.)

Here’s a similar side effect of having embedded a browser in NetNewsWire. (Click for full-size screen shots.)

Bloglines running inside
NetNewsWire's browserRadio UserLand. running inside
NetNewsWire's browser

Even though it’s odd, there’s actually a point to it—we discovered that some people use multiple aggregators. One for fun stuff and one for work, that kind of thing.

If one is browser-based and the other embeds a browser, then, well, hey, you’ve got something like the above.

A sense of humor?

A sense of humor? 04/25/2004 09:39 AM

The NY Times reviews Eats, Shoots & Leaves, a book about punctuation that's recently come across the Atlantic after receiving rave reviews in the UK. In what's surely a sly joke to the Sunday Book Review reader, the Times entitled the article, ' Eats, Shoots & Leaves': Punctuation and It's Discontents. At least I hope it's a joke.

PHP Humor ...  No that's *Not* a Joke Itself

PHP-Con is doing humorous interviews with some of the speakers to promote the event.  Here's the one with John Coggeshall:

When was your first PHP?

John Coggeshall: Sitting in a darkened smoke filled room... I was almost out of money but a friend of mine told me she [PHP] was good for a trick or two and didn't charge much.

His comments on Perl, Java, and Visual Basic are really good.  You can read more of this over at the PHP- Con site.

Humor alert

Humor alert 01/07/2004 06:50 PM
The other day, I wrote a post saying weblogs are ruining Google. I hate to do this, I hate to explain a joke, but it seems there's been too much confusion. No, weblogs are not ruining Google. I was kidding because, see, this is what people do: they search for something on Google, a weblog is one of top responses, and then they piss and moan about weblogs ruining Google, etc. Do I need to resort to writing "J/K" next to all silly posts?

The other funny thing -- at least to me -- is that both times I used the expression "text wrap" in my query, rather than the more common "word wrap." So it extra made sense that Google would return my post to me. And funnier still was the fact that I'd forgotten I'd already looked for a text wrap plugin for Eclipse months ago. So you see the levels of humor here? Did you ever suspect megnut posts had so much depth to them?

Code Humor Challenge: Some pretty funny examples of developers trying to be funny. People are submitting hundreds of comments of funny code they wrote and tried to get (or succeeded in getting) into production.

One of my previous employers had, for historical reasons, the requirement that all class names be prefixed with "Mc" (McUser, McCheckbox, etc.). I created the class McNugget, complete with methods like McNugget.dip(McNugget.BBQ_SAUCE).

Neurology of humor

Neurology of humor 06/21/2004 12:35 PM
Cognitive neuroscientists at Dartmouth College have shown that the part of your brain that "gets" a joke is not the same as the region that deems it funny or not. To test their hypothesis, the researchers conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on subjects while they watched Seinfeld and The Simpsons. From a Scientific American report on the study:
"The investigators found that instances of humor detection lit up the left inferior frontal and posterior temporal cortices--the left side of the brain. Humor appreciation, in contrast, led to spikes in activity in the emotional areas deeper inside--specifically, in the bilateral regions of the insular cortex and the amygdala... Past research has shown the left inferior frontal cortex to be involved in reconciling ambiguous meanings with prior knowledge. And ambiguity, incongruity and surprise are key elements in many jokes."
Still, the results are preliminary. When SciAm asked an outside psychologist for his expert opinion on the research, he commented: "If some people don't find The Simpsons funny, it's premature to say that they have a defective frontal lobe." Of course, he's wrong. Link

Via Wonkette, here's a slightly unfair but powerful re joinder to President Bush's jokes about weapons of mass destruction. Media is in the hands of everyone, and people are going to use it to hold powerful people -- including media people, such as the Washington correspondents who found Bush's performance so hilarious -- to account.
