"General, we have multiple inbound
bogies over the North Pole..."

Welcome to the 2004 NORAD Tracks Santa Website: For the 50th consecutive year, NORAD will be tracking Santa as he delivers presents tomorrow night. Let's hope a Patriot missile doesn't try to shoot him down by accident. It probably doesn't matter, because according to a seriously geeky analysis, he'll self-destruct anyway.

353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each.

In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second.

Ah, the magic of Christmas.

North Pole Goes Wireless

North Pole Goes Wireless 04/15/2005 04:36 AM

The possible puns regarding this story are practically endless, though the Register does a good job of exploiting most of them: Two Intel employees set up a hotspot at a research camp at the North Pole. It uses Iridium phones for backhaul, which means the access is probably excruciatingly slow, but people at the North Pole probably aren't complaining. The deployment is purportedly meant to check out how the equipment fares in such cold, wet weather, though there are plenty of other such experiments that have been done for some time. Dave Hughes has done tons of work in Alaska with wireless networks and he was also instrumental in enabling the hotspot at Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal.

Intel Goes Wireless At North Pole 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

north_pole_kthx.jpgWhile not busy encouraging the destruction of the original 'Moore's Law' article, Intel's employees have installed a wireless hot spot near the North Pole. Built in the Arctic region at the Barneo ice camp, Intel Russia engineers installed an 802.11 b/g access point and established a connection with four of their laptops, 78 miles from the North Pole (using, of course, Centrino mobile technology to accomplish this feat). The hot spot has since been taken down, but survived the cold (-22°F or worse) and worked reliably. Of course, "Intel pointed to the experiment as an example of how mobile technology allows users to work anywhere," even if I can't get a signal in my own backyard.

Dynamically Typed: Inbound Mail with PHP
and vpopmail

On Dynamically Typed today, there's this new post about "Inbound mail with PHP and vpopmail".

I suspect many of you - like SitePoint - use PHP to process inbound email for various purposes. I've hit problems in the past trying to shoehorn this behavior into our vpopmail installation. Vpopmail is a handy set of patches for qmail that ease the handling of large numbers of email domains and users.

The key problem is, vpopmail generally runs as the "vpopmail" user, and delivers all mail while executing under this UID. I discovered that our best bet was to create a local domain to have the relevant emails delivered to.

With the addition of a local domain to deliver the mail to, the scripts running on incoming mail can be assigned back into the user's realm (rather than the user running vpopmail) and let them execute once again as that "someuser".
