External TV Tuners/PVR devices: 3-way
shootout

External TV Tuners/PVR devices: 3-way
shootout
12/24/2004 12:55 PM
TV Tuners for the PC have existed for a long time but with the ever increasing popularity of TiVo-like services and the possibility of replicating such features on your Windows PC with little effort and a small investment, tuners have been getting a lot of attention this year.

TechSpot takes on three different products for this shootout, all of them external devices which should offer extra versatility versus its internal counterparts. The first is a unit from Transcend, which is called the TV-Box. Next on the docket will be a unit from Digistor. And finally, the largest of the bunch is the RTV VEG-N Video Entertainment Generator.

These are no frills units that allow you to watch television on your monitor, or play an Xbox game or two. How about a night at the movies, right on your laptop? Need a place to connect your camcorder to, and record the video? Do you like to pause and record live television? And guess what? It’s pretty darn cheap.

Toshiba to Add TV Tuners to Upcoming
Laptop
06/04/2004 12:34 PM

Word has it that Toshiba is planning on putting a TV tuner into one of their laptops, to which I can only really say: it's about time. It's always been painful to have this sharp, crystalline displays go to waste when it could, for a few dollars more in tuner chips, be working just fine as a TV. I know there are lots of ways you could add the functionality now, through either software or hardware solutions, but it just seems like such a no-brainer I'm surprised more companies aren't doing it.

I mean, it would be like Apple not putting high-quality line-in recording into the iPod, even though the hardware could support it. Oh wait...

Tested: 64-Bit P4

Tested: 64-Bit P4 03/19/2005 03:25 AM
Intel's 64-bit Pentium 4 and Pentium 4 Extreme Edition desktop processors launched in February, giving the 64-bit computing future that started with AMD's Athlon 64 chips even more traction.

What does 64-bit computing offer you beyond today's 32-bit platform? We compared two of the new chips, the 3.73-GHz P4 EE and the 3.6-GHz P4 660, with a 32-bit 3.8-GHz P4 (the fastest 32-bit P4), a 2.6-GHz Athlon 64 FX-55, and a 2.4-GHz Athlon 64 3800+. Results are mixed: You'll get a slight boost over a 32-bit P4, but you will pay about $100 to $200 more for an Intel PC than for an AMD one with similar or slightly better performance.

Wireless Usage Tested on Airplanes

Wireless Usage Tested on Airplanes 07/16/2004 11:56 AM

Cell phones test positive on AA flight: The days of not being able to use wireless devices from airplanes in flight may be coming to an end. Qualcomm is working on making CDMA-powered devices airliner-friendly.

Jacobs said San Diego-based Qualcomm would spend the next two years testing whether electronic signals interfered with the jet's avionics system. He also said the technology would be improved and the one-second delay would be shortened.

Eventually, air travelers should be able to make calls, download movies and do all sorts of other things with wireless devices aboard jetliners, he said.

UAVs Tested for Border Protection

UAVs Tested for Border Protection 05/24/2004 03:52 PM
Officials at the US Homeland Security Department's Bureau of Customs and Border Protection want to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to patrol the US/Mexico border. Starting in June, they'll get their wish when their first two UAVs start partolling the Arizona border with Mexico. While they haven't decided on a UAV for wide deployment yet, their testing will begin with two fully autonomous Hermes 450 UAVs manufactured by Elbit Systems Ltd. in Haifa, Israel. More details are available in a recent Federal Computer Week article.
