Selectively delete Safari favicons from the icon cache

Selectively delete Safari favicons from

Selectively delete Safari favicons from
the icon cache
12/24/2004 12:41 PM

d1taylor: "I updated the favorite icon (favicon.ico) on my web site, just to find that Safari insists the old one is good enough, even though other browsers are smart enough to show the new one. After some time spent here at macosxhints and other sites, I learned enough about how the Safari icon cache works to write this useful little shell script that works just fine with Safari 1.2.4. Remember to make the script executable (chmod +x script_name), and quit Safari before trying to use it. "

Ashcroft selectively prosecuting
Greenpeace?

Ashcroft selectively prosecuting
Greenpeace?
11/05/2003 12:09 PM
Greenpeace, has been charged with crimes by the Federal Government. Some Greenpeace members boarded a vessel that was carrying an illegal shipment of mahogany from the Brazilian rain forest to Miami. They hung a banner that read, "President Bush, Stop Illegal Logging." Is Ashcroft abusing his authority as attorney general? Would the current administration retaliate against someone that has publicly spoken out against them in the past? (No, this isn't a story on leaking the names of undercover CIA agents who happened to be married to administration critics.) Read on for details.

Using Up Gmail's Lifetime Supply Of
Space... And Looking For The Delete Key

Using Up Gmail's Lifetime Supply Of
Space... And Looking For The Delete Key
08/17/2004 03:23 PM
TDavid writes "The Gmail team has confirmed that there is currently no feature to deal with mass deletion of mail and they do not indicate when or if they will add this functionality. The current choices are either deal with deleting forever mail 50 threads at a time or using a third party script. Not a problem for those who receive 30 emails a day, but a huge issue for those who receive thousands of emails a day, with the vast majority being spam." Funny. I had been wondering the same thing, as I've been messing around with forwarding spam to my Gmail account over the last month (now pushing about 20% capacity, so a bit slower than the example above). One change, though, is that you can set the email box to show 100 threads at a time, rather than 50, which should speed up the delete process slightly. Still, you have to admit that Gmail is a beta product, and it's quite likely they'll add a "delete all spam" feature at some point. Either that, or add an option (found on many other systems) that will automatically delete mail designated as spam after a specific time period (1 week? 1 month?). I'm not sure it does much good to get super angry about a beta email product that clearly tells you you're running out of room, and then... runs out of room. A related question, though, concerns how good the Gmail spam filter actually is. In my tests, it's pretty bad. It appears to catch about 70% of spam, which is much lower than most anti-spam solutions. Of course, with such a low rate, you would figure that there wouldn't be too many false positives, but that's not true either. It tends to catch plenty of legitimate email and tag it as spam. Another thing they will hopefully fix before the system comes out of beta.

AppleScript to "Delete All" from Mail's

Jesse Shanks "I often find myself cleaning out multitudes of unread mail and spam by constantly just selecting all in a mailbox in Mail and deleting it. This simple script uses a handler available at AppleScript > Applications > GUI Scripting to do the task in two clicks. I started with no deletion warning, but had occasion to prevent the accidental deletion of a message and figured it would not hurt."

Gmail Adds 30 Day Mass Delete For Spam
Bin

Gmail Adds 30 Day Mass Delete For Spam
Bin
09/13/2004 01:12 PM
TDavid writes "A couple weeks back I wrote about how Gmail was missing a feature to mass delete emails in the "spam" bin and that I'd confirmed with the Gmail team that this feature had not yet been available. Since this is a beta product, they are looking for feedback and I was hoping to get folks to contact them and request this feature. Good news! This campaign seemed to help. Over the weekend I noticed a new message in the Gmail spam bin that indicates: "Warning: Spam messages more than 30 days old will be automatically deleted." This would be great except that the automatic deletion does not (yet) seem to be fully enabled. Currently the automatic deletion is moving slower than the spam actually comes in." As I mentioned in the addition to the original article, it seemed likely that they would add a time-based delete feature for spam -- and I'm sure it will start working better at some point. Of course, it would be nice of them to let users choose whether or not to enable this. I've used the Gmail search feature to find older messages that were designated as spam, but turned out not to be. Also, I should mention that since the complaint last month that the Gmail spam filter wasn't particularly good, it seems to have improved a great deal. It's still not great, but it's certainly getting closer to other spam solutions out there.
