Linux No Longer in Use at Microsoft

Linux No Longer in Use at Microsoft 12/11/2003 12:03 PM
In one of those wonderful about-turns that only the technology world can trigger, a famous northwestern software company has abandoned Linux. Ashlee Vance, the trusty Chicago-based stringer for The Register, shared with the world yesterday the news that, as he expressed it, "Microsoft [is] running on Microsoft again." "After spending a few months relying on Linux for protection," Vance wrote, "Microsoft appears to have made its way back to homegrown code."

I just bought a new digital camera, and before I bought it I didn't bother to check whether it was a Linux-compatible model. I didn't care. I knew that I would have no trouble getting its output into my computer with a USB cardreader. USB cardreaders have effectively made almost all digital cameras Linux-compatible.

Quality Is No Longer Job One, But That's
OK
03/31/2005 11:13 PM
The saying "they just don't make them like they used to" may be more than just pure nostalgia. First brought up in the 1970s, declining product quality is back on the radar as a concern for American society. Since the 1990s, there has been a suggestive trend of declining quality in consumer products. Has our society become too disposable? Products now improve so quickly, you can frequently get a newer, more feature-laden product for less than it would cost to repair the old one. The premium afforded to a higher quality product is less than in years past. This short-term focus may not be all the fault of the corporations designing these products, however. Percentage of savings as compared to disposable income has steadily declined since the mid 1990s. Is this indicative of an increasing short term focus of the MTV generation? Is our disposable society or planned obsolescence to blame of the decline in product quality? Are we doomed? Does it even matter? Faced with quickly improving products, consumers are willing to make the bet that a few dollars saved today will be more worthwhile than the investment in product longevity. They can then use the money they've saved to buy more stuff that will break in about a year. Everyone is happy. Manufacturers sell more product. Consumers have more stuff. Junk scavengers are ecstatic. Oh, right... environmentalists aren't so happy with this trend.

How to live longer

How to live longer 11/13/2003 03:57 PM
Extending your life, how to age well. The Seattle Times is running a week long series of articles on how to extend your life. One of the most interesting ideas is calorie restrictive diets. The basic idea is that you consume approximately 30% less calories than you need, and you will live a 30% longer lifespan. The Calorie Restriction Society website can answer any questions you have. Of course any plan that has problems like "Getting used to looking gaunt" and "How do I stop waking up from hunger" seems a little iffy to me.

I was using Eclipse (both 3.0.1 and 3.1M3) on Solaris x86 and it used to be on the download list, but now it is gone. WTF! I was hoping that, maybe, they'd switch the Solaris x86 build of Eclipse from Motif to GTK. I mean, how hard can that be? Instead they've taken it right off the list. I guess Eclipse.org is not as independent of an organization as I had previously thought. They must take orders directly from Palmisano. I want my Eclipse!

Is It Spam If You Asked For It, But No

Is It Spam If You Asked For It, But No
Longer Want It?
03/25/2005 07:27 PM
A new study from an email marketing firm is warning that ISPs are blocking a lot of "permission based" emails in their spam filters. The announcement is clearly implying that this is a bad thing and a problem that marketers and ISPs need to work on to solve (and, of course, this company wants to show off that they have some sort of solution). However, you have to wonder if this is really that big of a "problem." Most people don't define spam by the guidelines of things like CAN SPAM, but under FTC Commissioner Orson Swindle's spam definition as "anyt hing I don't like." Under that definition, plenty of things that people at one time opted into they might now consider spam. Of course, that might not be true in all cases, and ISPs that are block ing without giving users a chance to review/whitelist what was blocked are an issue, but if people aren't missing these emails... is it really a problem?
