Alaska part of Canada

Alaska part of Canada

Alaska part of Canada 11/15/2003 11:00 AM

While you were sleeping: Alaska became part of Canada, and Vancouver Island sunk into the ocean. This according to the lobby floor of the CBC building. It may be time for those guys - and all of us - to reexamine our geographic literacy.

Winter approaches in Alaska

Winter approaches in Alaska 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

A friend in Alaska sent this email in response to a postcard from warm sunny Greece:

"So, you are there...and... well...we are here... in the snow, sleet, rain, pestilence, fog, and darkness.  What more can be said?  The dogs are howling, the bears are hibernating, and we are hunkered in our camp, slowly cooking cassoulet while riding out the storm.  In fact, it has been so bad here that one of our local judges, Sam Adams, age 47, died of a heart attack while on a moose hunt a week ago, and he had to stay put with his hunting party for a few days before the clouds could clear and the plane could land. Can you imagine being one of the guys around the fire, wondering whether to put cards in Sam's hand, or look for another moose, etc."

Alaska Man Accused of Watching Movie
During Fatal Wreck
07/27/2004 04:09 PM

in-dash2d.jpg imageIn a ground-breaking trial, Alaskan prosecutors have accused a driver who accidentally killed a couple in a car accident of watching a DVD on an in-dash player during the accident, something that is not technically illegal in Alaska, but possibly still convictable as manslaughter (I'm presuming). We've all done stupid things like operate electronics while driving, and while I'm not saying this guy shouldn't be prosecuted if proven negligent, there is an interesting precedent set (or maybe not set) here. Watching a movie while driving is irresponsible, but is it that much different than looking at a map on an in-car guidance system LCD screen while driving? Hard to say. How much distraction is too much distraction?
