AP - It happens to all of us: There's a word on the tip of our tongues that just ... won't ... emerge, no matter how tightly we squeeze our eyes shut or how fast we drum our fingers as we tilt our heads in contemplation.

The developers of Readware technology (a semantic software infrastructure) have produced a downloadable software appliance. The "PI" short for "Political Informant" is surely a "must have" device for every political junky, critic or political pundit. [PRWEB Jul 31, 2004]

Stormtroopers Have Very Poor Aim

Stormtroopers Have Very Poor Aim 05/05/2004 10:45 PM
Over the last 3 nights, I've re-watched the original three Star Wars movies in order. While there are many important and recurring themes throughout the movies, one seems to have been very understated over the years. Stormtroopers have incredibly poor aim. It's really no wonder the empire eventually lost. The only reason I can see that they survived as long as they did was their sheer number. On a related note, it might be amusing to write my weblog entries...

Kill The Poor

Kill The Poor 09/27/2004 07:31 AM
I've been a soup van volunteer for three months plus a couple of weeks. I've also been casually mentioning this example of my beneficence in everyday conversation for about the same length of time. I use this particular phrasing, rather than "I work on a soup van", because what I'm trying to emphasise is that I didn't take it up lightly or gingerly. In the beginning, I didn't know exactly how it would turn out, but I did know that I wanted to be good. Between then and now, an awful lot became clear.

Those Poor Phone Companies

Those Poor Phone Companies 03/14/2005 06:12 PM

Qwest CEO Richard Notebaert, speaking at the Silicon Flatirons conference, used a great quote from former LA Dodgers managerTommy Lasorda: "I've stopped telling people about my problems. 80% of people listening don't care, and the other 20% are glad I'm having problems."

Notebaert's words are ironic, because his predecessor, Joe Nacchio, got into hot water by whining about his company's problems. In an incident that has become infamous, Dan Gillmor blogged in real-time about Nacchio's comments at PC Forum, turning the audience against hostile when people discovered Nacchio was pocketing enormous profits from selling Qwest stock.

Of course, like any good politician, Notebaert followed the Tommy Lasorda quote with a litany of complaints about how phone companies are regulated more than their competitors in the cable industry. Some things never change.

He had one good anecdote about the rate of wireless substitution for wired phone service. Qwest used to have to cancel vacations and schedule additional staff time in Boulder, CO, in early September, in order to handle the influx of University of Colorado students who needed phone service. Today, a huge percentage of those students just use mobile phones for their phone service. Qwest no longer sees a spike in demand when the students come back.

Poor David's almanac

Poor David's almanac 06/05/2005 10:55 PM
Poor David Brooks -- the guy's timing is simply awful. Here he is, offering a column -- "Meet the Poor Republicans" -- that tries to explain why a particular contingent of not-so-well-off voters has lately been voting for the GOP. His answer? Unlike the poor folks who vote for the Democrats, these poor people "agree with Horatio Alger": they believe that they've got a reasonable shot at moving up the ladder, living the American dream, making a fortune and leaving that word "poor" behind. Poor Democrats, on the other hand, tend to be people who think that the cards are stacked against them.

Unfortunately for Brooks, his column ran on the very same day that the Times kicked off a mega-series on "Class in America" -- the central premise of which is that there's a lot less class mobility in America than people believe. (Lest you conservatives fear that this is simply a plot by that filthy liberal Times rag to fill our heads with lies, the Wall Street Journal ran a front-page story last week reporting pretty much exactly the same thing.)

This juxtaposition of material couldn't possibly have been intended by the Times' news editors to make Brooks look like a condescending idiot or a closet Democrat, but that's the result. Because there's no way to put these two articles together without concluding that those poor people out there who vote Republican because they think they have a chance to get ahead, those people whose praises Brooks are singing, are, sadly, chumps. They have been sold a bridge. They believe in something that, like creationism or Saddam Hussein's WMD arsenal, is contra-factual. On the other hand, those poor Democrats, however unfashionably glum and not-with-the-morning-in-America program they may be, seem to have a clearer picture of the state of the union.

One could go further and begin to lay out how the policies of the Bush-era GOP, supported by Brooks' "poor Republicans," are only further locking in the sort of class immobility the Times (and Journal) articles note. But let's not kick Brooks while his own paper has tripped him sprawling, face-down, on the political floor.
