Blockbuster starts online rental war

Blockbuster starts online rental war 12/24/2004 12:09 PM

Blockbuster on Wednesday dropped the price of its monthly online rental service, undercutting the prices of its rivals for similar services. The company cut the subscription price to $14.99 with the price being guaranteed through January of 2006. Blockbuster's subscription allows customers to have unlimited rentals from over 30,000 titles, without due dates or overdue fees, free shipping both ways, at three movies at a time.

Canada

The battle for market share between online music services is heating up in Canada with Puretracks.com recently cutting prices on selected songs by 20 percent. A report in the Financial Post today says Puretracks.com's sale is on specific titles offered by Universal Music, including hot sellers and CDs on the year-end lists of music critics. Albums are being offered at $7.99, with individual songs priced at 79 cents. Apple's iTunes and Napster, which also operates Canadian services, did not respond to calls yesterday, according to the report. Both charge a base price of 99 cents per song and $9.99 an album. Price competition for online music has occurred more regularly in the United States, which also has more companies battling for market share. For example, iTunes charges US99 cents per track, while Wal-Mart Stores Inc. charges US88 cents and Real Networks Inc.'s Rhapsody service charges as little as US79 cents.

Rental Car GPS Spying!

Rental Car GPS Spying! 04/06/2005 06:18 PM

My buddy and I were driving at a rate of speed in a rental car that was well above the posted limit a year or two ago. Out of the blue his cell phone rang and as he talked I noticed he started slowing down. You guessed it, the rental car agency was calling him saying he was violating his rental car agreement.

If memory serves me correctly he was charged like $300.00 extra when we turned the car in. Finally a court has stood up and say you cannot do this. If your not aware that rental car companies are doing this you have been so advised. [Techdirt< /a>]

There was an ad on TV for a bridal fair just a moment ago. It occurred to me that the bride spends thousands of dollars on a dress she’ll never wear again but the groom rents his tuxedo, which is something he’ll have many chances to wear again. That seems backward to me.

Music Rental: Another POV

Music Rental: Another POV 06/01/2004 05:43 AM
People don't want to rent music, observed Steve Jobs, which is why there isn't a subscription-based service over at the iTunes Music Store. And I tend to agree on this point.
But, one of the "advantage" of the old Napster, a lot of people have also observed, is the ability to sample and discover new music. And sampling and discovering new music on the iTunes Music Store, currently, is too much work. A lot of clicks. A lot of waiting.
Maybe the new iPod division should invent something like a personalized radio station, which can be listened via iTunes or iPod. The tunes selection will be partly based on what the user have on his iTunes library. And, oh, a 30-second preview is simply not enough for discovering new music.
Simply choose the option, "Include iTunes Music Store samples", and iTunes/iPod will selected previews into your current playlist. Perhaps even with a text-to-speech announcement. Oh, of course, make it easy for the user to then buy the tune.

Fees

Blockbuster To Pay Up For No Late Fee
Fees
03/29/2005 02:05 PM
Following Blockbuster's plan to drop late fees in favor of a longer grace period and then a large lump charge for "buying the movie" if you waited too long to return the film, New Jersey came along and sued Blockbuster for being misleading about its "no late fees" marketing slogan. Apparently, 46 other states jumped on the bandwagon and sued as well. Sensing trouble, it appears that Blockbuster has given in and will pay up a fine, refund fees paid and change their marketing program away from the "no late fees" claim. It still seems like Blockbuster had a valid claim here. A late fee is a "punishment" fee for returning a product late. Blockbuster wasn't punishing customers, but simply assuming that they were buying the video in question. In other words, people were getting something in return for those fees -- not just randomly charged.
