Brain fingerprinting

Brain fingerprinting 02/18/2004 10:38 PM
Brain fingerprinting is about to take centre stage in a last-chance court appeal against a death-row conviction in the US." The technology was developed by Dr. Lawrence Farwell, one of Time Magazine's "100 Innovators who may be the Picassos or Einsteins of the 21st century." Is this a positive development for humankind (after all, it may clear innocent accused of their alleged crimes, or uncover dangerous terrorists), or is it yet another scary advancement in the government's encroachm ent on our privacy ? I personally think Philip K. Dick, author of "Minori ty Report" may have been more of a prophet than we ever knew. (See this link as well).

Used book, DVD, game sellers must submit
to fingerprinting
05/04/2004 03:17 PM
Jon Asato sez: "Here's a story that caught my eye on GameSpot.com. Businesses in certain states are required by law to collect, among other privacy invasive information, the thumbprints of customers who want to sell their used video games, CDs, and books."
In addition to recording the drivers' licenses, telephone numbers, and addresses of customers who sell used games or consoles, some stores are routinely requiring thumbprints as well. Retailers are collecting the information under a law intended to regulate pawn shops and make it easy for law enforcement officials to track down thieves who fence stolen goods. A number of states have such laws, and Utah passed its own version just last month.

In California, the law has been on the books for more than a decade, but with the increased market for used games and DVDs, some retailers are taking a cautious approach and are collecting fingerprints just to make sure they don’t run afoul of local regulations.

India And Colorado To Introduce Brain
Fingerprinting

India And Colorado To Introduce Brain
Fingerprinting
04/29/2004 01:28 PM
dr2tom (from the DaVinci Institute) writes "The government of India signed a contract this week to use Brain Fingerprinting technology in its criminal justice system. Invented by Seattle-based Dr. Lawrence Farwell, brain fingerprinting uses a headband with sensors measuring brain waves to determine whether certain information is stored in a person's memory. For example, if a picture of a murder scene is shown to a crime suspect, brain-wave measurements might indicate familiarity with the image. Working with the Colorado-based DaVinci Institute, the company said it would like to build a national training center in Colorado." We've written about brain fingerprinting many times before, and it's highly controversial, with those who are against it pointing out the many problems with the current research on the subject. While there's been a lot of press about the topic, it still seems worthwhile to remain skeptical about how well this technology works.

Office 2003 Tool: Local Installation
Source Tool
05/28/2004 01:48 AM
The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

New EU probe for Microsoft

New EU probe for Microsoft 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
The European Union has announced that it will initiate another probe with regard to monopolistic / anti-competitive activities over Microsoft and Time Warner's plans to buy anti-piracy software manufacturer ContentGuard. ContentGuard is a US company that makes DRM solutions. Time Warner and Microsoft agreed in April of this year to buy out Xerox's majority stake in the company.

The EU announced that "After a preliminary review, it appears to the Commission that the transaction might possibly create or strengthen a dominant position by Microsoft in the market for Digital Right Management solutions." The EU concluded that DRM is going to be a major issue / product in years to come, and was concerned that this merger would give Microsoft an un-healthy 'tip' over other companies in the market.

The commission also announced that they would be widening the investigation to look at vertical integration (i.e. Microsoft buying up suppliers like ContentGuard) in other areas. The investigation will report in January 2005.

Earlier this year, Microsoft was given a 500 Million Euro fine for anti-competitive behaviour. Microsoft is challenging the decision.
