Delicious comment threads 12/22/2004 01:45 AM

This makes my head hurt - indirection makes me sweat - but I think that Michael Lenczner is proposing a way to use del.icio.us not only to track the comments we leave on people's blogs, but to bundle together different people's comments into one RSS feed so that you can see, for example, where all of the contributors to Many2Many are commenting. But, I got this wrong in several rounds of correspondence, so I'm pretty sure I've gotten it wrong again; I am user but not a power user of del.icio.us. Read Michael's blog entry to get the straight scoop...

Who ate the threads?

Who ate the threads? 03/11/2003 09:31 PM

I tried the kill -QUIT trick on FreeRoller this afternoon after it locked up. Looking at the stack traces for Tomcat's 75 threads, I found that most were either waiting for database connections or involved reading cache entries from the disk.

Recently, I had changed to OSCache settings so that Roller caches to disk rather than to memory. I did that because Roller was running out of memory. Caching to disk fixed the out-out-memory problem, but at the expense of heavy disk access. So, I changed the OSCache settings back to cache to both disk and to memory. OSCache seems to have some limitations in this area. Apparently, if you configure OSCache to cache in memory and to disk, you can limit the number of entries in the memory cache, but the disk cache is unlimited - which is not the best situation.

Also, I changed the DBCP connection pooling parameters to reduce the maxIdle and maxWait so that threads will timeout quickly rather than hanging around waiting for connections and thus forcing the creation of new threads.

Those changes kept FreeRoller up for a much longer period of time, but did not fix the problem.

On Threads

On Threads 06/17/2005 04:38 PM

Last week I attended a Sun “CMT Summit”, where CMT stands for “Chip Multi-Threading”; a roomful of really senior Sun people talking about the next wave of CPUs and what they mean. While much of the content was stuff I can’t talk about, I was left with a powerful feeling that there are some real important issues that the whole IT community needs to start thinking about now. I’ve written about this before, and of the many others who have too, I’m particularly impressed by Chris Rijk’s work. But I think it’s worthwhile to pull all this together into one place and do some calls to action, so here goes. [Ed. Note: Too long and too geeky for most.]...

The June 12th On Threads piece got slashdotted (twenty thousand hits for a 2,300 word hard-tech piece, not bad), which provoked really interesting feedback from (among others) David Dagastine, Greg Wilson, and Ben Holm, along with pointers to some related work. All those pointers are worth following, and some of the points are worth a little more discussion...

FreeRoller eating threads.

FreeRoller eating threads. 03/11/2003 11:53 AM

FreeRoller keeps on running out of threads to process incoming requests. This could be a problem in Roller, but I suspect that we may have run up against this bug in the Tomcat 4.0.X HTTP connector:

BUG5735: HTTP connector running out of processors under heavy load

The bug is marked as fixed, but I think that means the fix is in the new Tomcat 4.1.X Coyote HTTP connections.

Next time this happens, I'll try Glen Nielson's advice (from the bug report):
I would recommend that you dump the stack for all running threads when
you experience this problem. This can help identify what is causing
the
problem. By reviewing the stack dump for each thread you can determine
whether the problem is due to Tomcat or your application.

On unix you do a kill -QUIT {tomcat java pid) to cause the thread
stack's
to be dumped to catalina .out.

A Processor for Tomcat runs your application code, delays in your code
can cause additional processor threads to be created to handle new
requests.
Possible application or configuration problems which can delay
requests:

Connection delays due to networked services such as a db.
Connection delays due to running out of pooled resources.
   Thread synchronization deadlocks.
A cascading affect where many new processors get created due to
excessively long JVM Garbage Collections. start java with
   -verbose:gc to detect this.

Eric Albert on counting threads

Eric Albert on counting threads 11/02/2003 02:07 PM
I had lunch with Eric Albert and Buzz Andersen at the OS X conference. Eric helped me debug a mach port leak in NetNewsWire. It was in a method which counted the current number of threads in use.

In case you’re curious about how to count threads, here’s Eric's post on how to do it without leaking mach ports.

I’ve yet to check it out properly but it looks great (fake wood aside) and promises to be a very useful piece of software.

Delicious Eye Candy

Delicious Eye Candy 08/27/2004 01:33 PM

xorg-translucent.jpgX.Org is set to release a new version of their X11 server tomorrow (X11 is the system that drives the GUI desktop on Linux and other UNIX systems). The notable part of this release will be extensions to the X protocol that will allow more flexibility in the compositing of windows. This allows for drop shadows on windows, translucent windows, and other visual effects (The screenshot at right is a bit small, but it shows a video playing at 50% transparency with a browser behind). Linux-Gamers.Net has the full scoop:

Another useful feature is the inclusion of the new XDamage extension. Monitoring the regions affected by rendering has wide-spread use, from VNC-like systems scraping the screen to screen magnifying applications designed to aid users with limited visual acuity. The DAMAGE extension is designed to make such applications reasonably efficient in the face of server-client latency.

This all seems a bit technical, I know, but it will mean a more 'Mac-like' visual experience for Linux desktops, and more efficient rendering. The screenshots look great. Windows users, don't worry. I'm sure Longhorn will be along eventually. Right? =)
